The Arms Hotel Lobby, Saturday [1013]

As usual, the lobby was set up buffet-style for afternoon tea. There were usual assortment of pastries, scones, tea sandwiches and gourmet teas as well as coffee.

Mary claimed a pot of chocolate-flavored tea and sat down with her task list for the cook-out that she and Stan were throwing tomorrow afternoon.

Who is waiting for someone to join her before she orders the sandwich sampler.

Stan wandered in, as expected. He hated to disappoint a friend.

"Hey you," said Mary. "What sandwiches do you want today?"

"Oh, the chicken fingers or the French ham sound delicious," he admitted. "I've been looking forward to this all week."

"Got that, Gunther?" asked Mary. "And some cucumber sandwiches for me too."

Gunther rushed off, then returned with the sandwiches and a fresh cup of tea.

"Looks delicious," he said, eying the fare. "Let's see how it tastes." He took a bite of the chicken finger sandwich and made appreciative noises.

"I think you just made Gunther happy," said Mary, watching the chef walk away with a huge smile on his face. "He's really looking forward to this party tomorrow."

"Excellent. When should I expect a bevy of staff to magically transform my home into a palatial estate complete with fine dining, large TVs, and highly-trained waitstaff?" he teased.

"They should start arriving tomorrow morning, although I can't promise any big-screen TVs," laughed Mary.

"Well, as long as no one comments on my bacheloresque decor of strewn clothing and too many dishes, it should work out. May have to install hi-def projectors instead of the TVs, then," he said with a smirk.

Mary made a mental note to send someone over to Stan's house really early to start cleaning.

"How is your weekend so far?" she asked.

"It's not too bad. I remember who I am and there are no more miniature knights underfoot, so I'd say that it's a success so far."

Mary blinked a few times. "You know, miniature knights would have freaked me out a couple months ago. Yesterday, they were just no big deal to me."

"They were very amusing," he said with a grin. "I felt like I was in Gulliver's Travels or some epic tale."

"I was at the banana stand yesterday and the guy there had never seen any Fandom weirdness. He thought the tiny knights were hallucinations," said Mary, grinning. "I did my good deed for the day and explained to him that he wasn't crazy."

"Remind me to deputize you in the order," he said with a wink. "He must be new. Banana stand?"

"Yeah, the one run by GOB's nephew. He's a really sweet kid and bananas with chocolate and nuts are a really nice combination." Mary looked around to make sure Gunther wasn't within earshot and whispered, "I usually eat lunch there on my day off so I get a break from Gunther food."

"Sacrilege!" he whispered with a grin. "So you like his bananas?"

Um. Totally not dirty, really.

It better not be dirty.

"I believe in patronizing local businesses. It keeps the island's economy going," said Mary.

"Which is a good cornerstone of any economy. Now, if you started getting your bananas from off-island, that might have a serious impact on this economy," he teased.

"You can joke all you want, but I think all these new business are really improving the community on the island," said Mary. "Have you seen the new clothing store?"

"I think so. Haven't ventured in yet," he said. "Unless there's a special on suits, I should be stocked up for years to come. Is it nice?"

"I loved it. Hoshi took me there to help her find a homecoming dress and I found a lot more stuff for myself," said Mary.

"Ah, one of the students?" He didn't know it was one of the students who worked at the hotel.

"Hoshi's a new student who works here on Wednesdays. She speaks German. Gunther actually likes her," explained Mary.

"Oh, her," he said. "I've seen her before. Huh. Homecoming. Doesn't seem that far off, really." It did.

"Are you talking about next year's homecoming or the one they had last weekend?" asked Mary, looking at Stan with a confused expression.

"My own," he said with a smile. "Sorry, reminiscing a bit." He sighed. "So the next big things in Fandom are the Parents Weekend, right? That's after Sweetest Day."

"Oh, no, don't tell me Sweetest Day is coming up," groaned Mary. "It's one of my least favorite make-believe holidays."

"It is rather Hallmark," he agreed. "And then it's Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the end of the year. It's Holiday Season."

"It's like one big snowball rolling downhill until it turns into one being holiday avalanche," groaned Mary. "Guess I should start planning my big holiday shindig."

"Ooh, big holiday shindig?" he asked, eyes twinkling. "This sounds much bigger than a party at my place."

"Which means I need to start early," said Mary. She may have looked a little distance. Last Christmas was the first time she met her half-sisters.

"There's only a few months to go. However will you manage?" he asked with a (mostly) straight face.

"I may have to recruit a few people to help me out," said Mary, grabbing her clipboard and making a note of it.

"...Is this a polite way to tell me I've been volunteered?" he asked innocently.

"Well, last year I had Ed play Santa Claus, but in case he's not available, how do you feel about wearing a red suit and fake beard?"

"Oh, dear." He looked down at his stomach-y area. "Is that a subtle hint I hear?" he said with a ~~hearty Ho Ho Ho~~ chuckle.

Mary took a good look at Stan. "We'll have to get you a padded suit, of course."

"Thanks for saying so," he said with another chuckle. "I have been doing too much sitting and not enough moving, though."

Unbelievable, but I actually have the weekend off. I should be around the rest of the day!
