Chilly Boulder, Late Saturday Afternoon/Early Evening

Dōjima had promised Cal ice cream for his birthday, and she had meant it.

Admittedly, he probably wasn't expecting the store to be filled with balloons, streamers, and people, but Dōjima tended to be a bit of a dork about things like this, especially when it came to her friends.

Besides, he had said it was okay if she brought a small army, so inviting the entire student body was perfectly acceptable, right? Right.

"Tell me what he says, yeah?" Ino asked. "'Cause chances are he won't tell me."

"Hopefully I will have news for you come Monday," she said with a firm nod. "And hopefully Liir won't get all mad at me for bringing it up."

"If he does get mad, he's just going to have to deal--a fight isn't the end of the world, right?"

"It isn't," she agreed. "We've just never fought. Or argued. Over anything."

"...nothing at all?"

"Uh-huh," she said. "Nothing has come up that we've had a disagreement over." Not that Amber could think of anyway.

Ino blinked at her for a long moment. "...but he's easy to disagree with...?"

Amber blinked back. "...over?"

"A lot of things?" Ino said, confused. "At least I find it so."

Amber thought about that, considered Liir, and frowned.

"But... I just find him... I don't know, I guess we just fit, kind of? If that makes sense?"

"...I guess," and most of her dubiousness of that came from her trying to figure out if that was a backhanded insult or something. Huh.

Of course it wasn't, not at all. Amber just didn't argue with Liir. At all.

Then again, that might change when she talks to him about Ino.

"Does that bother you, Ino?" she asked, getting a feeling that it might.

She shrugged a bit. "He's still my brother."

Someone was sulking now, yeah.

Eeep.

"I'm... I don't know what to say to make you feel better."

"I'll survive," she said, with a bit of her own arrogance peeking through. "Anyway, whatever, the day I have a relationship without a single argument ever is the day I'm dead."

...most likely true, that.

"Um."

Yeah, still didn't know what to say.

"...we might, Liir and I, have one over the conversation I want to have with him. Maybe. Depends on how he takes it, I guess."

"He'll try to avoid it," Ino predicted with the air of one who has had arguments with him before. "Wander off on tangents, and crap. And if you really piss him off he'll just start avoiding you 'til he thinks you've forgotten about it and then any mention of it will send him fleeing out of the room you're in. The only time he sticks around is if he thinks you're trying to get rid of him forever, and even then, he tries to soothe things over without going into what's wrong with him."

Ino was... possibly not helpful here.

"And I don't think fighting or not has anything to do with fitting well with someone." Stubbornly.

Amber's eyes went a little wide.

Well.

Um.

"I guess... not. But it does help." Also a little stubbornly.

Ino had experience with grumpy Liir, oh yes.

"Depends on why you're arguing," she insisted. "Some people do it for fun."

Like, say, her and Ichigo.

"Is it... fun?" she assumed Ino would know.

"Depends on the fight--sometimes they're fun, even as they're serious, but you've got to be able to trust the other person to know that you don't hate them, and that after the fight you're still going to be friends, and when you know that they know that, then it can be fun. Even the best of friends have fights sometimes, right? Some things just don't come out right in a calm and rational manner."

"Oh yah, I do know that. Cal's my best friend and we can fight like crazy. But we both know where we stand and that we don't hate each other. Oddly, I think our disagreements end up making us closer, as friends."

She bobbed her head. "So I think that can work for other relationships too, yeah?"

Amber nodded, seeing that. "Yah, I think so. What's that say for Liir and me, that we never argue?"

That got a shrug. "That there's all kinds of relationships?"
