Support Services Meeting: Friday in the Park

The largest picnic shelter at the park was decorated with a couple of the incredibly girly posters that had been going up around town, just in case people might think they should go to... any of the other shelters that didn't have any people in them. Because Francine was thorough that way, and also because she sometimes judged others by things she would expect herself to get caught doing.

The picnic table nearest the barbecue grills had a sign-in sheet on it, alongside a first aid kit, a couple of notebooks, and two cell-phones.

"She's not really a witch," Karla said, choosing to ignore the aftermath of the apology, now that it was over. Mother Night, she hated apologizing. "Landen means 'someone who is not a member of the Blood.' But most of the people here don't act like the landens back home do, so I forget, and now I'm babbling. Look over there, it's a change in conversational topics."

Karla? Uncomfortable? No.

Oh lord, could Francine ever sympathize with that. The fact that Karla could come right out and say it made her laugh, only a little enviously. "So landen means...people who don't have powers, where you're from?"

"Right. They exist on the fringes of Blood society. We don't interact much, though the Blood who rule them usually check on landen villages and whatnot in their desmesnes. Unfortunately, they mostly fear us, though they can hardly be blamed for that." Karla frowned.

"You'd all be considered landens, back at home, but you haven't the same bearing, so I forget. Mostly you don't look at me like you're worried I'm about to set you and your family on fire for blinking inappropriately."

"...You can blink inappropriately?" Sometimes Francine did not concentrate on the right details. "Wait, no. Chuck could." Chuck Bass could do anything inappropriately.

"Chuck? Chuck Bass? He seems perfectly nice to me," Karla said, confused. "We've spoken a few times." Twice. For a few moments. Still, Chuck hadn't actually said anything rude. That she'd noticed, anyway.

"He is." Or, you know, Francine was a girl who had already forgiven him for walking in on her while she was naked and just standing there staring, because she was dumb. "But he's Chuck Bass. He could breathe inappropriately. He's talented that way."

"Like this?" Francine demonstrated. It would have been less disturbing while not wearing a tank top.

"I see." Karla prudently stepped back a pace, not wishing to incure the need for another apology. "In appropriate indeed." She couldn't help but tease thought. "One wonders where you learned the art," she grinned.

Francine paused, trying to think where she had learned that pose. "...From my mother. I'm ...aware that that's very disturbing so I'm going to stop thinking about it now." Oh Francine. If only you knew how disturbing.

Karla gave Francine a sweet, almost wistful smile. "I'd like to think my mother would have gotten around to teaching me how to breathe inappropriately," she said.

Francine was about to comment again on the Wrongness of that idea when Karla's meaning hit her, and she ended up saying, "Oh. I'm sorry," instead.
