As Desperation Day dances went, this was probably not the most tacky ever. Of course given that it was Desperation Day, so tacky really went with the territory.

There was glitter, oh, was there ever glitter in a multitude of sparkly colours. But even more so, it seemed that the decorators had taken the 'Hearts Afire' theme literally as large cut out hearts adorned the walls. Each with a tissue paper 'flame' bursting from the top of it. Streamers in all shades of pink twisted across the ceiling, forming almost a canopy. Which hopefully would not be literally set afire. The Fire Department would probably disapprove of that. Also a lot of people's dresses would be ruined.

Let's stay away from any literal fire, okay, guys?

"Thank you," he said and laughed a bit. "I'm not so sure about this tie but it seemed to be the required attire. Did I tie it right?"

Beka did not know much about ties, but she peered at Jonas' tie anyway. "It looks well to me," she said, reaching up her free hand to straighten it a little.

"I practiced," he said, feeling a little proud. "You should have seen the first few tries. I nearly choked myself."

She couldn't help the laugh. "I'm glad you didn't. It'd have been sad showing up only with an ermine."

"Not that I have minded terribly," she added for Emma's sake.

"I hope I'm not making her jealous, stealing your attention and all," he laughed. "I haven't met Emma but I've heard of her and I think she's frighten me."

"She'd only frighten you if you deserve it," Beka said warmly, she did like her big sibling a lot. "So you'd not have to worry."

"Do you think I'd deserve it?" he asked, grinning a little mischievously.

"No," she said with a grin. "She'd approve of aught you can think of, no doubt."

"I think you're biased," he said but he didn't sound like he minded too much. "Are you going to dance with her?"

"Am not. She likes mischief." So did Beka. "I will if you'll dance with the both of us."

Jonas hesitated for a moment. "I'm not that good a dancer."

"You did well enough last time," Beka reasoned. "Or did you not like it?"

"I liked it," he assured her quickly. "I just don't want to put your friend in danger, animal or not."

Beka glanced down at Emma. "We could find her a safe spot to hassle other people from."

"As long as you don't think she'll wander off," Jonas said. "I wouldn't want to be partially responsible for a missing roommate."

She did look worried as she watched Emma. "That'd be bad. Mayhap someone would agree to watch her?"

She was certain Emma was going to hate her once she made it back to normal.

"She's cute enough," Jonas said, smiling down at Emma. "I don't think you'd have much trouble with that. She's got friends, I'd assume? I bet they'd watch her for a bit."

Beka nodded. "It'll be fine. Mayhap Karla won't mind watching her for a bit."

She hesitated. "I feel rude talking like this about her when she can hear me."

"Oh, I'm sorry," Jonas said, wincing. "I didn't even think about that. I'm still not used to people just turning into animals and then turning back. It's strange."

"I'm not accusing you," she said gently. "Tis hard not to, I just think she'll be cranky at me later."

"I'd say I'd make it up to you but I think that might make it even worse," he said, laughing a bit nervously.

"It'll be fine," Beka assured him. "And I'll find Karla so we can dance without you having to worry about being bitten."

"And I do like not being bitten," he laughed. "I tend to be in better moods and in less pain when that happens."

"I much prefer it when you're not either," she agreed. "It'd make the dancing less fun if you were suffering through it."

"I'd say you were sooner to be the one suffering if I dance too badly," he said and snickered.
