"But of course," she said with a smile. "Choose your horse."

"I suppose the bay will do, unless you have other options," he asked, one side of his mouth quirking up.

She looked him over. "I think the bay will serve you well," she said with a smile.

"Ah, well. I require company, Betsy. Saddle up, now." He was turning into a parody of a foppish noble, still managing to keep from laughing.

"As you wish, Sir," she said and began saddling up, coughing into her sleeve to hide her laughter. She'd considered dropping a curtsey, but knew that would have set her off into gales of laughter.

So difficult to get a good stablehand these days. "Quick now, haven't got all night."

He cleared his through. It just sounded like laughter. Really.

She gave him a Look, eyebrows arched, over her shoulder before remembering her part. "I mean... Yes, Sir," she said innocently.

"There might be a bonus later, lass," he called out, turning away to not laugh.

"A big one, I hope," Helen laughed under her breath as she tried to keep a straight face.

"Oh, that would be so kind of you," she said more loudly.

"Huge," he mouthed at her.

"I'm sure you'll like it!" he said, as his mouth developed this funny quirk where it wouldn't quite stay in a normal position.

That got another laugh turned into a cough.

"I'm sure I'll be happy with whatever you choose to give me," she said as demurely as she could manage.

He snorted. The cough right after did nothing but emphasize the snort.

"I'm sure you will, be very happy," he said, a touch pompous.

"I'll do my best to make sure you are happy as well," Helen said earnestly.

"Aye, that's the spirit!" he said, almost crowing. "Now, where is a good place for a ride? I should like a bit of a rest and a bite or two later, before riding again, of course."

Of course he was talking about horses.

"Of course," she said earnestly. "I'll bring food and drink along and plan a route that stops by a nice glade, if that will suit you."

"Of course," he echoed. "A nice spot for a bit, indeed."

He was having entirely too much fun with this.

"Well, then, Sir, if you'd like to mount up we can be on our way."

She couldn't stop herself from smiling.

"Oh, yes, must with the mounting first," he said, grinning despite his efforts. "Proper mounting is key to a good ride." He was losing his decorum.

Helen had to turn away and go into a stall to hide her laughter. she returned when she'd composed herself. "I'd offer to help, but you are clearly a master at mounting."

"It's clear to see my skill," he said, inspecting his nails before buffing them on his shirt, once 'Betsy' had returned. "But come now, let's off for the mounting. I'm eager to see this glade you speak of." James should play poker with that face.

She was on her horse quickly. "Follow me, Sir. I'll have you there in no time."

"Excellent," he said, just as deftly. "I follow your lead, young Betsy."

Helen took him a bit of a longer way than he might have expected, simply to tease him, but still before too long they were pulling up at the glade. "Will this suit, Sir?" she asked innocently.

He looked around; quiet, remote, actually fairly pretty. It looked rather familiar.

"Yes," he said with a sigh. "I suppose this will have to do."

"We could go back..."
