The Park, Wednesday Afternoon

After spending yesterday engaged in some truly pitiful staring at the slip of paper with Sam's phone number, followed by some even more pitiful staring at his phone, followed by some Lifetime level lurking on a college campus, Dean was back at start. Not a single freakin' clue what to do next came to mind. You know, things were so much easier when you could solve life's problems with a machete.

Bloodier, but so much easier.

Dean pocketed his phone one last time, sitting back against the park bench. He tilted his head up slightly, eyes fixed on a random cloud. "You know, if this is supposed to be a reward, it blows."

Thus sayeth the Righteous Man.

"Trust me, it's way weirder for me," Dean replied dryly. "I keep expecting the next person to pop up out of nowhere here. Already saw Jo and some guy who looks like me."

"Priestly? With the mohawk?" Sam asked. "He's a good guy. I mean, not that that makes it any less weird, but at least you don't have a jerk running around with your face, you know?"

"Face this pretty? Not gonna happen," Dean shot back.

Sam snickered. "It's good to know all Deans are fairly alike, no matter how old and decrepit you get."

It was distressingly good to hear Sam have a genuine laugh at that moment. And Dean was sure as hell not going to think on that anymore than he absolutely had to.

"This Peter guy. He know about the family business?"

"Yeah, he knows about it," Sam said after a moment. "People don't keep many secrets around here, so the family business kind of became everyone's business. Or, at least, it wasn't something we hid, because we didn't have to. People here have seen weirder stuff than we have. Hell, a lot of them are weirder." Present company included, but that was a conversation for later.

Yeah, Dean wasn't so sure with the whole vessel bullshit.

"Keep an eye out at school then. Any changes in behavior with your friends, anything at all."

"Uh, okay," Sam said slowly, studying Dean. "Are you being paranoid or is there something I should look out for?"

"Sam, there's always something to look out for." Way to not answer the question, Dean.

"Yeah, I know," Sam admitted reluctantly. "It's been nice not to think about all that stuff in college. For what it's worth, I think you'll like being here. It's not as dangerous, but still exciting enough for, you know, you."

"I've had enough excitement for a while." A year maybe. And then it's back onto the shittiest storyline ever.

"Then I hope you can relax," Sam said sympathetically. "If you need anything, just call me. Family's still family, even with weird timelines. Or you can talk to Zoe and I'm sure she'd help."

"Your old principal?"

"Yeah," Sam said, before remembering that being on a first name basis with the principal was probably weird. "I mean, she's been here forever, she probably knows a lot, right?" That was totally smooth, really.

"Wanna tell me what's going on?" Dean asked. "Because you're still a shitty liar."

Unless its about things Dean didnt want to know. Like demon blood addiction.

"Hey!" Sam said with a scowl, even though that was totally true. "I can't believe she didn't tell you so I have to do it, but... look, you have to understand that things might be different for me than they are for you. It's a really weird multiple-versions-of-universes thing and I can't even begin to explain it but--Zoe's my stepmom. Our stepmom, me and my... you."

Dean's mouth went tight at that. "And the kid she mentioned?"

"Grace? That's my stepsister," Sam said quietly. "Dad sent us here for the summer while he went on a hunt, and then he came to join us and he met Zoe and--she lost someone too and I guess--I don't like saying Grace was an accident, but Dad and Zoe liked each other and--it's really weird, I know."

Dean gave a laugh at that, more bitter than amused. "Of course. Good ol' dad."

Yes, someone still had lingering Adam issues.

Sam winced at how Dean sounded. "He and I sort of get along now? So that's something, right?"

Dean rubbed his forehead, nodding at that. "That's good. More than I can say about how things left with--"

Well, you know.

"I'm sorry," Sam said sympathetically. "And I'm sorry I wasn't straightforward with you right away. This isn't exactly a situation I've been in before."

"Yeah, Doctor Phil moment over," Dean announced. Because emotions were hard on a good day. "Get your ass back to school."

Wait a moment.

"We'll need to get you a tattoo soon though."

"Uh, okay," Sam said uncertainly. "Are you sure?"

"Dude, I talked to Jo. You got possessed," Dean shot back, tugging down the collar of his shirt to show the antipossession mark. "You're gettin' inked."
