Luke's, Monday

Eliot was here on a Saturday.

The kitchen staff were all huddled together, staring at him suspiciously and taking bets as to what strange thing was about to happen.

"That's ridiculous," Eliot said. "I don't -- I'm not only here on a weekend when weird shit's going down."

"Usually it's 'cause the kids are here," the dishwasher said.

"Or the dead have risen," the busboy offered.

"Or when the aliens attack!" said the cook.

Eliot frowned, thinking, then shook his head. "Okay, but --"

"Remember the one where the Ghost of Christmas Present made everyone empathic?" said the busboy.

"That was a good one," the cook agreed. "I liked he one where he was about ten and climbed up on the awning to try to read."

"Definitely better than when he's sixty and all nostalgic," the dishwasher said.

"What about the time he got possessed by a serial killer and one of the customers had to magically throw him into the wall so she could escape?" the busboy asked.

The other two frowned at him.

"Was that a Saturday?"

"I don't even know, that was about a million years ago."

"Yeah, man, we're not talking about ancient history."

"Right," said Eliot. "Well. At least the new guy will get a feel for what working here will really be like."

Poor Miguel.

Today's specials
Sweet potato and brussel sprout hash with poached egg and thyme hollandaise
Brown butter pear crepes
Pumpkin cheesecake muffins

Luke's was open and OCD free, as the mun used all her brain on the text apparently.

So far, all Miguel knew was that it was a diner, and it apparently had pretty decent food, judging by the specials.

He came in, waved at Eliot and everyone, and then headed over. "Hi. So this is it, huh?" It didn't look too intimidating.

He was probably going to get eaten alive.

"...tell me you don't keep live animals in there," Miguel said, eyeing the cook.
what_the_shock: (confused)

Miguel rolled his eyes and sighed. "Of course it does. Isn't the point of a freezer to keep life from happening?"
what_the_shock: (Huh?)

[personal profile] what_the_shock 2017-09-23 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Maps and parkas. Right."

Miguel's tone was less 'you're putting me on' and more 'I am resigned to this'. He sighed and opened the door. "How good are medical benefits here?"
what_the_shock: (Oh)

[personal profile] what_the_shock 2017-09-23 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, Miguel could handle himself; he just liked to cover all his bases.

"Great. Anything in particular I should look to make, or is it chef's choice?"
what_the_shock: (trust me)

"Right." Miguel sighed again and headed in. He left off the parka in favor of being able to move, but picked up a map. "How shocking big is this thing?" he asked nowhere in particular.

Some of the things on here he'd never even heard of, so steak seemed like a good bet. He probably should've checked what was in dry storage before going for the meat, but there was a lot you could do with steak...

Miguel came out about twenty minutes later with a couple packages of sirloin, a crack in his sunglasses, and a large, winged...thing...wrapped in spiderweb and screeching through a webbed gag.

"Where do I put this?"
what_the_shock: (shocked)

[personal profile] what_the_shock 2017-09-23 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's not a spider, just a...pteranodon? Sort of? Or maybe a dragon; I didn't want to give it a chance to breathe on me. And why the shock would I just put it back in the freezer so it can attack later on?"

That was more insane than finding it there in the first place!
what_the_shock: (my head hurts)

Of course he was. A reputation for not letting things in the freezer kill him. Miguel facepalmed.

"Whatever," he muttered, "you're the boss." He'd taken it down once, he could do it again.

He set the steaks and his cracked glasses down on a shelf, hauled the thing back into the freezer, clocked it on the head, sliced it free, and got out before it recovered.

"Can I just cook now, or is the stove going to try to eat me, too?"

"I'll take it." Miguel picked up the steak and went to check the storage room for what they had. He was actually pretty impressed, and came back not only with onions, oil, salt, and corn flour, but a decent Cotija and a can of nopales. He'd mentioned huaraches to Eliot the other day, so it seemed like a decent place to start.

Plus, he could work out a bit of aggression pounding the steak and dough.
what_the_shock: (science!)

"Sure," Miguel said, half-distracted as he worked. "Hey, is there a cast-iron skillet?"
what_the_shock: (pensive)

[personal profile] what_the_shock 2017-09-23 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)

Miguel set to work, and after a while had a good-sized platter of huaraches. He washed up and came to knock on the door of Eliot's office.

"Ready to grade me?"
what_the_shock: (unsure smile)

"Never had to worry about speed before." Miguel made a note of that as he picked up a plate and slid it over to Eliot. "Huaraches con carne asada. I wasn't sure how much to make, so." He nodded at the rest of it, which was enough for the rest of the staff if they wanted.
what_the_shock: (thumbs up)

[personal profile] what_the_shock 2017-09-24 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
"Sounds good." Miguel grinned. "Anything else I need to know?"
what_the_shock: (grin)

[personal profile] what_the_shock 2017-09-24 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
"I can always tune it up if you like," Miguel drawled. "Otherwise, I'll leave it alone. And pancakes are Sunday, got it."

What pancakes had to do with anything, he had no idea.

"Sure," Miguel agreed, "Saturdays work for me."
