Homecoming 2017, Community Centre [Saturday Evening]

Just when you thought it was time for the island's collective consciousness to maybe move on from the whole sharkicane thing... along came Homecoming! Well, the theme was actually "Under the Sea", but like the Student Council wasn't going to have glitter-encrusted sharks feature heavily in the decorations? Please.

Of course, it wasn't just sharks: there were plenty of glitter-dolphins, and fish, and octopuses octopi octopodes too. Jellyfish-shaped lights hung from the ceiling, and strategically-placed LED projectors were set up to complete the underwater ambiance.

Being social at parties wasn't something she had ever been expected to do, and Breq felt that just showing up had to be enough. She sipped her drink and watched the people on the dance floor, unaware that she was humming along to the music, not completely out of tune.

Raven would generally rather avoid occasions like Homecoming completely, these days, but Kathy had started to give her sad-puppy, "please don't be completely feral, Best Friend" looks again, so she was making an effort. She'd even mimicked a cute little white dress for the occasion.

The occasion in this case involved hiding in a shadowy corner, but still! An effort was being made!

"Raven!" Kathy don't sound so happy (or surprised) to see her. "You made it!"

Yeah, she was hanging out in the shadowy corners, but Kathy was just fighting against Raven being completely feral. Moderately feral was well within acceptable parameters.

"At least this far," Raven agreed. "What can I say? You inspired me with that slinky black thing."

And thus got her to go for a less-than-slinky white thing. Sure.

Kathy wasn't going to point out the very obvious flaws in that logic. She was just going to grin at the fact that her best friend was here, with people, in something that reminded her of Raven's old attention to style.

"My old junior prom gown," she said with a bit of nostalgic affection. "I only wore it for like a half hour the first time."

Then Nick had called and asked if she'd wanted to go heroing instead.

"Figured I'd see if I could beat that record if I wore it again."

Kathy laughed. "It helped that I got ready in my room and I told the guys to go on without me so I could finish up in peace."

Because makeup was hard enough when there weren't two guys intent on monopolizing your attention.

"That'll do it," Raven said with a nod. "Have they seen you in it yet? Do I need to worry about whether you three will be defiling the house while I'm out?"

"They were both very appreciative, in a gentlemanly fashion, of course," Kathy said, trying to sound prim. "And those are some big words from someone who goes around the house naked all the time."

"Beds are moreso," Kathy said, happy to cling to her city girl ways. "They have blankets, pillows, and way fewer splinters in my ass."

"I'm totally making you go camping with me sometime," Raven threatened. "I'll even let you bring a bedroll in case the tree doesn't work out."

"Better do it fast," Kathy declared. "Because it's already cooling down and if you think you're gonna get me to sleep outside when there's snow on the ground..."

She shuddered. Thin-blooded Californian girl right here, thanks.

"Weenie," Raven teased. "There's nothing better than curling up in a sleeping bag with someone when it's really cold out."

"Counterpoint: curling up under a big blanket on the couch, with a scary movie on TV and cups of warm apple cider in your hand," Kathy argued. "Still get the warm and cozy but with bonus entertainment and refreshments and non of the worry about the weather."

She'd honestly been thinking of just lying in a warm sleeping bag and staring up at the stars.
