Friendsgiving - Apartment Above Stark Industries, Saturday Evening

Well, it looked like this dinner party was going to either be dead or the strangest one that Tony had thrown in a long time, just based on how he woke up this morning.

But the invites had been sent and there was a catered turkey all ready to be eaten. And mama didn't raise no quitter, so here Tony was. Soldiering on through One Of Those Weekends.

"...oh god, should I have childproofed the cabinets?" he asked himself, staring at his completely not kid-friendly apartment.

Yeah, this would be a great party.

"It's disgusting," Steve said, making a face.

Much like food make with gelatin and mayo, then!

"Can't you say you're allergic?" Alec suggested hopefully. "Grownups gotta listen if you're allergic."

"I can't on account of bein' allergic to so many other things," Steve said, pursing his lips. "Ma'd worry."

"That's fair," Alec said quietly. "I don't wanna make Nana worry, either. If I'm too much trouble, she might send me back to foster care."

She said she wouldn't, but his last fam--the last people he'd stayed with had talked about being a family, too, but had ended up sending him back anyway.

Steve didn't say "she wouldn't do that!" because he'd totally known people who would do that. "Good idea," he said instead, nodding stoutly. "They worry 'bout everything."

"Yeah," Alec said. "She even makes me hold one of the other kids' hands when I cross the street like I'm a baby."

The horror.

"I don't have to do that," Steve said.

Because he generally wasn't allowed outside, but DETAILS.

"I don't," Alec protested. "...At least, not when Nana's not looking."

"Well, yeah," Steve said. "You don't wanna do it when they can see or maybe she'll make you hold her hand."

And all your street cred would be GONE, Alec.

And he had so much of it! With his violin playing and book reading and general nerdiness.

"Gross," was his Very Cool conclusion. "I don't need to hold anybody's hand."

Even though he kinda thought he'd like to hold Parker's. And Eliot's.

"Me either," Steve said. "We're practically grown-up."

No. Just...no.

They weren't even practically pubescent.

"Don't see why people gotta treat us like little kids when we ain't," Alec agreed.

While Steve ate rainbow-colored marshmallows.

LIKE A MAN.

"I'm much smarter than half the guys in my apartment building," Steve said. "Ma says that's because I don't drink bathtub gin and go to church regular."

A VERY TINY MAN.

Alec didn't say what percentage of the people he was smarter than, but mostly because that kind of bragging only got him in trouble before. It'd be awhile before he rediscovered his innate brashness. (That being said, it was a very high number, just like his IQ, there had been tests.)

"Why would you fill a bathtub full of gin?" he asked. "That sounds wasteful."

"I think maybe they sell it?" Steve said, wrinkling his forehead up in thought. "Or somethin'? I'm not s'posed to sociate with them on account of their loose morals and cause they're gonna get thrown into the paddywagon."

Alec nodded; the words were different but the sentiments were the same. "Yeah, there are kids my Nana won't let me talk to, neither. Cause they're in the pipeline, an' it's just a question of whether they're gon' get shot or arrested first."

"Tommy Malone," Steve said, nodding. "He's goin' straight to the Devil by the way of the state penitentiary."

Guess who'd been listening where he shouldn't have been.

"That's why I gotta be in before dark most nights," Alec said. Though it wasn't really a complaint, considering most of what he liked to do--read, practice his violin, draw his Hardiman comics--were all inside activities. Doing them outside just got him made fun of. Sometimes beaten up. "Cause that's when all the gangs come out an' Id don't wanna get involved with alla that."

"That's smart," Steve said, nodding. "I'm too scrawny for anyone to want me in a gang anyway. They don't even want me on a ball team."

"Me neither," Alec admitted. "They call me a nerd an' laugh at me. An' Nana says I need glasses, so it's only gonna get worse."

Steve made a face. "They're gonna break 'em."

There was always a "them."

Always.

"An' it ain't like we can afford to get new ones when they do," Alec agreed.

"Can you hide 'em for the walk home?" Steve asked. "I do that with my art notebook or else it always ends up in a puddle."

"Yeah, but there's always the schoolyard," Alec sighed.

Steve groaned sympathetically. Little unsupervised kids were the worst.

"Get a buddy?" Steve suggested. "Bucky always watches out for me."
