Well, it looked like this dinner party was going to either be dead or the strangest one that Tony had thrown in a long time, just based on how he woke up this morning.

But the invites had been sent and there was a catered turkey all ready to be eaten. And mama didn't raise no quitter, so here Tony was. Soldiering on through One Of Those Weekends.

"...oh god, should I have childproofed the cabinets?" he asked himself, staring at his completely not kid-friendly apartment.

Yeah, this would be a great party.

Steve stared at the hand for a half-beat too long, then held out his own fist with a "here goes nothin'" sort of look on his face.

Alec giggled and tapped his knuckles against Steve's. "You ain't never did a fistbump before?"

"No," Steve admitted with a laugh. "We don't do that in Brooklyn."

"You still high-fivin' in Brooklyn?" Alec asked.

Because what else was there?

"And shaking hands."

Like tiny old people.

"Are y'all, like, eighty or somethin'?" Alec asked.

"Just polite," Steve said.

"An' nerds," Alec said with a grin.

Steve made a face. "I'm not a nerd! Probably!"

"...You don't know what a nerd is, do ya?" Alec asked.

"No," Steve admitted.

"Someone smarter'n than everybody else," Alec said proudly. "Like a geek!"

...That meant something else in the thirties, sweetheart.

"Um," said Steve, eyes going wide.

"What?" Alec asked, confused.

"Think it means somethin' different now," he said.

"What does it mean to you?" Alec asked, suspicious.

"Are you in the circus?" Steve asked.

"Naw?" Alec looked confused. "Why would I be?"

[That's fine, DW, don't post. I don't even care.]

"A geek is another word for a circus freak," Steve said. "Like the tattooed lady and stuff."

"No way!" Alec said. "A geek is a nerd! Like with computers an' stuff!"

"...a what?" Steve asked.

"A computer!" Alec explained, his fingers moving in the air like he was typing on an invisible keyboard. "You know, the screen, the keys, all the information inside? Internet?"

Very helpful, Alec.

Steve just looked blank. "No?"

Get used to feeling lost, Steve. Just sayin'.

He had a tiny notebook for a reason, dammit.

"How don't you know what a computer is?" Beat. "You Amish?"

To be fair, Alec had only the vaguest idea of what the Amish were, but that could explain the milkman, the lack of good cereal, and computers, right?

"No, I'm Irish," Steve said, still looking confused.
