Job Fair, The Park, Sunday

While the weather seemed to be on-again-off-again sputtering rain today, the island, perhaps recognizing that outdoor job fairs didn't tend to work well in the rain, had provided a large canopy in the park, under which numerous booths were neatly set up, awaiting employers to fill them. Notices had handwavily gone out advertising the event, and so the usual contingent of food vendors had congregated on the outskirts of the park, shaking off their summertime 'this is for Wednesday' mindset in order to provide cheap fried goods to folks who were swinging by as an excuse to get out and be social today.

There, the island had done its part. Fandom's locals were welcome to do whatsoever they pleased with it from here.

Booths - Blackstone Foundry and Forge

Amaya wasn't necessarily looking to hire anyone per se. She was pretty sure there wasn't really anyone on island blacksmithing like she did. Still, she supposed someone else in the shop sometimes so she could take care of other business without missing out on a potential customer and hawking some of the non-custom work could be helpful, and it seemed a good opportunity to open the doors if anyone wanted to learn.

So she'd spent part of yesterday chiseling out a nice "So You Want To Be An Apprentice?" sign out of wood and fitting it with metal on the edges and on the raised letter to really make it pop, then settled in to work on buffing out a piece of her perhaps potentially patented Gremlin Armor in between visitors.

Hey, Amaya. Look who had left the usual Luke's staff to deal with the pancakes for the day in order to come scope out the situation here!

"I," he said, strolling up to her booth, "have another, significantly more boring job for you, if you want one."

And few things made Amaya perk up quite like here, have some more work!

"No job," she said with a swipe of her hand, "is boring, unless you're about to ask to pay me to watch paint dry, in which case, I'll question your sanity, but I'll gladly accept. What'cha got for me this time, Kanan?"

Kanan chuckled and shrugged his shoulders a bit.

"It was brought to my attention that I don't have proper practice swords," he replied. "Or, at least, one of the new guys was looking at my selection of bamboo ones and was judging me more than a little bit for them."

He still thought they were fine, but hey, his sword was made of plasma. So.

By the slightly confused expression on Amaya's face, one could discern that she felt they were perfectly fine, as well, but, hey. She shrugged it off and figured she'd worked with plenty of eccentrics to know that some people just have preferences. Sometimes very frustrating and hard-to-pin-down preferences, but it paid the bills.

"What else did they have in mind?" she asked. "Different sort of wood, or were they more in the mindset that if you're going to be using steel, it just makes more sense to be practicing with steel, too?"

"That second one," Kanan replied with a shrug. "I think it's something about weight and balance. I pointed out that we were mostly working on form, but I can't deny that it wouldn't hurt to get a hang of how actual steel weighs in the hand, either. I was thinking... three, at least. I can't see me sparring more than two people at once anyway."

And one thing about training with steel: steel broke down, needed to be tended to or replaced after a while. She could hardly be against the idea of some potentially easy, steady work.

"Just some simple practice swords, then?" she asked. "Could be a good excuse to break out some molds, that'll make it real quick and inexpensive, plus good should you end up needing more."

It was also a foundry, after all.

"Unless you wanted to do something like different weights and balances for a variety of training, but even then, shouldn't be too much of a task at all."

"I'm thinking simple and straightforward," Kanan admitted. "I have an income, between Luke's and the school, but these things are still coming out of pocket."

And he was still throwing most of his money at the most baby-sized beginnings of a rebellion while he was at it. He clearly needed to do more smuggling work.

"So quick and cheap it is," Amaya said with a grin. "Nice little weekend project for me, if anything. Or, well, mid-week, perhaps, if you wanted them for your usual sessions on Friday."

"This week, next week... there's really no hurry," Kanan replied. "Friday I'm probably going to have to put a raincheck on my weekly sessions anyway, what with the visitors coming."

He had a mild fear of these weekends. Not because he had anybody coming - he didn't, they were all dead - but because other people tended to have terrifying guests.

"Oh, yeahhhh," said Amaya, head tilting. "That is coming up now, isn't it? Should be interesting. Don't think I was around quite yet for the last one; definitely wasn't teaching back then, so that'll be...interesting."

Not as good with words as she was with weapons, this one.

"Any advice for any first time-meeting-parents level teachers?"

Kanan paused to consider that question very carefully.

"... Mostly just don't piss off any of the ones who dress in all black with creepy masks or whatever," he admitted. Because his Vader trauma would never fade. "Otherwise, I think you'll be fine. You more than grasp the subject matter you're teaching. Compared to some of the other teachers around here, especially. I can't imagine any parents not being satisfied with the education you're giving their kids."

"Don't piss off the creepy ones in black with masks," Amaya repeated, but, honestly, that just seemed basic common sense. "Got it. And I guess you're right. It's hard to imagine a parent taking offense to marketable skills with immediate results."

Well. Except, perhaps, Beaker's parents. She could see them maybe quirking a brow at the fact that her class somehow hadn't managed to kill Beaker yet. But did Beaker even have parents? That was a question Amaya could go her entire life without needing an answer to, really.

"I think you'll do fine," Kanan replied, and then shrugged. "If you have any questions, though, I'm in office three. I'll probably be there at least Friday and Saturday."

The jury was still out on Sunday. He'd already skipped a week of work in order to check this thing out, after all.

"Apprenticeships, hm?"

... Fjord was bored these days. He was a bored Fjord.

"Afternoon, Amaya," he added, giving her a polite nod and a smile. "I hope you've been well?"

"Afternoon, Fjord," Amaya bobbed her head back, returned the smile. "And I've been well enough, thanks for asking. How 'bout yourself? You looking for a way to fill some hours?"

Which apparently was a problem for some people around here. She didn't get it, herself, but, then again, she was too busy picking up every job anyone threw at her and quite a few that no one did.

"As a matter of fact," Fjord gave her a small, faintly wry smile at that. "I have been. I feel surprisingly landlocked for a sailor on the island, and I haven't quite acquainted myself well enough with the local technologies to entirely understand how it is that folks here manage to fill their time."

So he bathed a lot? And drank sometimes.

"Well," said Amaya, casting a thoughtful look toward the booths around her, "there's certainly a good variety to choose from. Anything in particular catch you eye so far?"

Amaya's lack of self-awareness at times could be astonishing, really, but just give her a second.

"Although..."

...there it was. She hitched her thumb toward the sign. "Learning a new trade'll suck up some of those hours, no problem, and you've definitely got the brawn for it, I can tell you that much."

"Althou

"Strong back and no fear of hard work," Fjord agreed, chuckling a little. "If you've got room to have me, of course. It would be a useful skill to have, especially given the fact that both Fenris and myself are swordsmen."

So he even knew what to look for in a weapon!

"Y'know," said Amaya with a faint grin, "he's yet to swing around and see the forge, but I guess he hasn't had much need yet. Ah, well, no matter. Got any particular days in mind, you can give it a little try if you like, and if it doesn't suit you, well, then, no problem there, either. Schedule's pretty wide open."

"So's mine," Fjord admitted. "Is it... Mondays? Mondays, I teach. And I just took a Caritas shift Friday nights."

Because he still had no idea that Friday nights were traditionally the busy nights at the bar.

"Which are the other days of the week? They're different here than they are back home."

"And you've got Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, in that order, between those two days, then Saturday and Sunday--that's today--on the ends," Amaya offered. "I guess I lucked out a bit there. Funny, the months are different, but the weeks are the same." She shrugged. "Either way, whatever you want, it's yours. All I ask is that you don't even think about touching the Crumbler, and don't start messing around with the forge or foundry until we've had a chance to go over it."

"Seems reasonable," Fjord replied, and then paused and tilted his head thoughtfully. "How about Wednesday, then?"

Since there didn't seem to be any other convenient days of the week that began with F. At least Wednesday seemed tidily sandwiched in the middle of his other commitments.
