Town Hall, Tuesday
Jesse had given walking up and down the Causeway a spirited try yesterday, but after a few attempts accomplished little, she'd let it go. Town Hall it was, though the phones there didn't give her much of a reprieve, either.
By the time she was done reading all the files an overenthusiastic Nina kept giving her, it was late. And so she'd bunked up on a couch in a back office, and she was now waking up with an unfortunately familiar case of back pain.
Something was ringing.
She groaned and sat up. Is that...?
It was the phone, an old 90s model sitting on the desk in front of her. Nobody ever comes in here, huh? Explains the cobwebs. She snatched it off the desk and pressed it to her ear.
"Hello?"
"Jesse! Thank god!"
Something in her uncoiled. "Emily." Her Head of Research. Thank god indeed. "Do you have any idea--"
"--Where you are? No, none." A sigh. "It's like you stepped into the Foundation and out of the Oldest House. We've got Rangers down there right now, but we're hindered by this... we're calling it a time freeze. This is the first time we've had more than three minutes of straight-up flowing time. I'm looking into that, too."
"I don't doubt it," Jesse said wryly. "Enjoying your first week on the job?"
"Oh, this is utterly fascinating. Worrying, but fascinating."
"So I'm not in the Oldest House?"
"Not anywhere that we've already documented. Which I know is a subtle distinction, but..."
"An important one, yeah." Jesse tugged a little on her ponytail. "I'm on an island? It's called Fandom. And if I have to believe all the paperwork, it's an AWE-magnet."
"That could explain how you wound up there," Emily started. Then she cut off abruptly. There was a dial tone, and then silence.
Jesse rubbed her face with both hands. She said they were having time freezes. That's probably another one. But at least the Hiss hadn't gotten to her.
Which was also strange. As far as Jesse knew, she was the only source of Hedron resonance in the building. Without her, the psychic defenses against the Hiss would've collapsed. So maybe I am still in the building.
She heard the door open.
"Breakfast!" Nina bellowed. "You want some breakfast?"
I am a little hungry.
She tugged on her jacket and stepped out into the front office with a wry smile. "What've you got for me?"
The Mayor was in.
