Having recovered -- somewhat -- from the whole "zombies attacked my town" thing, Michael flips the sign on the door from "closed" to "open." He picks up a broom and begins sweeping the front of the store, where someone (something?) had tracked in dirt. He sees movement in the corner of his eye.

"What the...?"

Rats? He looks under a display rack and sees two glittering eyes staring back at him. Damn, he hates rats. Then he thinks about the zombies and some of the other interesting...people that he's met. At another glance he realizes there are three glittering eyes staring back at him.

"Ben, grab some rat poison for me, would ya?"

Ben takes off his glasses and gives Michael a quizzical look.

"There's a rat...-like thing here."

Ben hid a smirk. "You should be careful, it might be one of the customers."

"One of the..." Michael rubs his temples with his fingers. This is not what he'd expected when they'd moved out here. He looks under the display again and points. "You take anything, you're paying for it. Understood?" What he hears in response resembles a squeek, but isn't quite. Michael shakes his head and goes back to sweeping.

*Paige walks into the shop carrying a picture of a dress, she looks around for someone to help her*

*Eyes the girl, knowing she must be a high school student*

You aren't, uh, getting married, are you?

*Keeps glancing at Paige while looking up the price and shipping costs.*

That's going to run about $700, including shipping and insurance and all that.

*Paige laughs* God no, well I mean I'm a bit young for all that. No it's for the homecoming dance, I'm going as a medieval lady.

*She looks shocked for a minute* Wow that's a lot isn't it? It is a pretty perfect dress though and well I guess I can save it in case I ever do get married *Paige tries very hard not to think about marrying Geoff, but doens't quite manage it*

*She nods slowly* Yeah ok, can you order it for me, I only have $100 on me now, wil that be ok for a deposit? I should be able to bring some more in tomorrow. I get paid tonight

$100 is fine for the deposit. At that price, I suppose I should ask before I place the order if you're absolutely sure you want it? I'm not sure in a town like this that I could manage to sell it to someone else if you decide you don't, and it might be a hassle to get the company to take it back. My mother has some vintage stuff for sale down the street that wouldn't be so expensive, but *lowers voice and looks around furtively* I sincerely doubt she has anything quite this nice.

*Paige nods* Yeah I definitely want it, my boyfriend really liked it and it's perfect for the dance, plus I guess I could also stick it on Ebay on if I don't get another chance to wear in again *she grins and gets out her purse*

Oh yeah. EBay's great. I got the startup money for my first store through an eBay auction.

*Smiles as he recalls the joy of getting $10,000 for that very rare comic book*

I'll put in the order for you ASAP. Here's your claim slip with the balance of what you owe at the bottom there.

*leans in to whisper conspiratorially* If he really likes you, and he really likes the dress, maybe your boyfriend should chip in on it.

*Paige smiles but shakes her head* No he doesn't have much money himself *she shrugs* I can afford it, I mean it's not like there's much to do in the town, anyway he's gonna have to get his own costume.

*she hands over the money* I need it before the 7th, it'll be here by then right?

*takes money*

*consults the company website*

Says it should be here by mid-week. You can check back Tuesday or Wednesday, or if there's somewhere I can reach you, I'll let you know when it comes in.

*Paige smiles* I'll just come by to get it, I'm in town quite a lot, my boyfriend lives here, you might know him

I don't believe we've met...I haven't gotten out to meet a lot of people here yet. Ma probably knows him -- she runs the diner, seems like she knows everybody.

It was nice meeting you, though. Stop by again. Or have your boyfriend stop by. We could use the business. ~~And more cute men around to oggle behind Ben's back. Or with Ben. Whatever.~~

*Paige smiles* Yeah of course, Geoff is working there actually, only a few nights a week. And yeah I'll send him in once we've decided on his outfit ~~and hands off he's all mine!~~

*Paige smiles* Yeah I really need to shop a bit more! ~~I'd applaude you if you could manage not to drool over him!~~

Rory walks in, and looks around to see if anyone is in the store. She looks lost, and almost ill - her large eyes have matching blue crescents under them, and her general demeanor is of someone who hasn't gotten a lot of sleep, and who is carrying a large emotional weight.

Stepping inside just moments later, Shane was hoping to get some lighter fluid for her Zippo. In the middle of digging in the pockets of her hoodie, she draws up short when she looks up and sees a young woman standing just inside the doorway, almost having walked right into her. Second time that's happened this week.

Sighing, she shakes her head to herself. Gotta pay more attention - open your eyes, McCutcheon. As she starts to step around the young woman to apologize , she catches sight of her expression and immediately stops.

"Hey," she says quietly, pulling her hand from her pocket. "Are you... are you okay?"

"Oh, I'm fine," Rory says, startled out of her reverie. She realizes she doesn't know the girl, and attempts a polite smile. "I'm Rory," she says, extending a hand.

She blinks at her for a moment bewilderedly before smiling and taking her hand. "Shane," she says amiably. "Nice to meet you."

Rory nods. "Do you go to the school? I don't think I've seen you around before."

"Well, I ummm... paid a visit this past weekend, but we probably didn't see each other," Shane says, a wry grin curling her lips. She tucks her hands back into her pockets and regards Rory for a moment. "Is your name short for something?" She asks, tilting her head inquiringly.

"Lorelai, actually," Rory says, surprised by Shane's insight. "It's my mom's name too. She named me after herself in a fit of Demerol right before she went into labor. I've gone by Rory as long as I can remember, though."

Shane smiles, eyes twinkling with amusement. "I wouldn't have guessed Lorelai," she murmurs, a chuckle creeping out along with her words. "I was thinking of Aurora, maybe. But it's pretty. Rory. Different."

"Thank you...it's actually because when I was little, I couldn't say Lorelai...so my name is born of bad enunciation," Rory says, smiling wryly. "Shane's kind of unusual for a girl. I mean, it's pretty," she fumbles. "But...any stories behind your name?"

[ooc: I actually have no idea why doesn't go by Lorelai, but I always assumed it was something like that.]

Shane shrugs a little, smiling. "I don't know... maybe my dad wanted a boy," she says, her tone slightly facetious even though there's a glint of something else in her eyes. "My mom named me after my aunt Michelle. That's my middle name."
