Tuesday Very Late

Crowley sits on the bench, watching the ducks. He's kicked back, listening to the sounds of the night...off in the distance, near the water, he can tell there is joy and pain and revelry. Friendship. It stings him. He smokes and soaks up the night.

((Feel free to talk to him, you night owls))

About 8:30pm

Walking through the park, Tara sees a new face and heads over to say hello. Today seems to be the day for making new friends.

Tara grins. "A really, really good day. And you?"

Tara looks at the cigarette, and wrinkles her nose. "No, thank you. Where I come from, only evil people smoke." She winces. "Sorry. Um, not that you're... Okay, let's try this again. I'm Tara, and apparantly my mouth doesn't consult my brain."

Tara starts to answer, and then stops. "That's a really good question. Actually, it's why I'm in Fandom. Let's say that where I'm from people tend to think in black and white, and I'm here to... research grey." She gestures to the bench beside him, not in the least disturbed by his teeth. "May I?"

"Crowley." Tara sits, and cocks her head at him. "Given that this is Fandom, and Geoffrey Chaucer is running around somewhere, I just have to ask... you're not Aleister Crowley, by any chance?"

Tara nods, excitedly. "The very same - and from a point in his career before he wrote Canterbury Tales, which if you think about it actually explains a lot of his more revolutionary views."

Tara stares at the ground for a moment, and then grins. "Neat."

She looks back at Crowley. "Nothing's as simple as people think it is. Especially good people. The more a person cares about being good, the more narrow-minded they become, and the more they end up actually committing acts that could be regarded as evil. It's..." she grins wryly. "It's ironic."

Tara nods. "And the same act can be both cruel and graceful, all at once." She looks oddly happy about the notion.

"I am. And she was. A witch, as well as brilliant. Um, her, not me. I mean, I'm a witch, but I'm not..." She sighs.

"I'd love to talk with you and your angel," Tara replies. "You mean Azra, don't you? And you're a demon, right? I mean, you're obviously not human..."

"Azra Phale, that right," Tara nods, surprised by Crowley's vehemence. "Um, I don't know much about the Ineffable, really. But the Powers That Be - who are about as ineffable as we get where I'm from - they finally figured out that good people can do evil things, and even become evil. And vice versa. Um, there was this thing where a vampire chose to fight for good, and a good witch went bad and tried to destroy the world. Just after I died. And they were both friends of mine, so..." she shrugs. "I got assigned? To, um, investigate? Why people do the things they do?"

Tara shakes her head. "Vampires make their own choices. They have free will - how could one ask for a soul if he did not?" She smiles. "But I'd be pleased to share your bench, Mr. Crowley. I don't expect to find the answers, but... sometimes it's just about asking the questions. I'd love to hear your thoughts, though. I can't imagine what you've seen."

Tara shakes her head again, firmly this time. "Free will isn't about where you go afterwards, Mr. Crowley. We don't get to decide that. All we get to decide it what we do while we're here, and vampires can do that just as well as anyone." She smiles a little, fondly. "Maybe they have even more grace - those who do good, knowing they will never be rewarded for it."

Tara leans in a little closer. "Angelus is a sweetheart, but don't tell him I said so." She tips her head back, looking up at the stars. "He doesn't have a soul, he doesn't want a soul - but he sees things so clearly. He'll tell you he's evil, but I don't think he is, really. He's just following his joy, and it takes him different places than it takes most people." She laughs softly. "And how can something evil be joyful? Isn't joy an aspect of grace?"
