[Aziraphale follows Crowley throught the door of the diner. They give the place a curious once-over, the demon pronouncing it "acceptable" with a sneer, and settle in at a table in a semi-secluded corner of the room.]

[identity profile] flash-serpent.livejournal.com 2005-10-27 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Apple pie, angel. Can you believe these Americans claim it as their own? [He slides into a booth.]

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2005-10-27 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps they do it differently, my dear. [Sliding into the booth opposite the demon, Aziraphale inspects the menu.] Meatloaf, dear boy?

[identity profile] flash-serpent.livejournal.com 2005-10-27 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, angel. Don't tell me you've never had that particular suburban staple?

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2005-10-27 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I don't believe I have. What sort of meat is it, do you think?

[identity profile] flash-serpent.livejournal.com 2005-10-27 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Generally, beef. Was there ever a more useful creature created besides the cow? There's your proof of the Ineffable, right there.

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2005-10-27 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[Aziraphale nods] Quite. I suppose, if it's terrible, it can be dealt with.

[identity profile] flash-serpent.livejournal.com 2005-10-27 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, quite so, angel. [looks around and spies a non-smoking sign, hisses a bit, then picks up his knife and begins flipping it between his fingers]

I talked to Tara in the park last night.

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2005-10-28 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
[Aziraphale smiles to himself at Crowley's fidgeting. His expression clouds just slightly at the mention of Tara.]

Did you? And what did you talk about?

[identity profile] flash-serpent.livejournal.com 2005-10-28 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
[He raises hi eyebrows, causing his glasses to drop skighlty and he looks over the top into Aziraphale's eyes]

What do you imagine we talked about, angel?

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2005-10-28 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Cheese?

[identity profile] flash-serpent.livejournal.com 2005-10-28 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
[Completely disarmed, he smiles and laughs his low rasp.]

Not hardly. That would have been that insufferable pest, Kiki. No, angel, the Witch and I talked about you and I. So much she doesn't understand...

((modding the food onto the table))

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2005-10-28 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
[Aziraphale's brow furrows with worry.] Is she...very upset?

[identity profile] flash-serpent.livejournal.com 2005-10-28 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, no. She took it surprisingly well. In fact, I think she regrets intruding.

And she pities us, to some degree. [He cuts his meatloaf with the edge of his fork, his leg jiggling under the table nervously]

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2005-10-28 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
[Aziraphale pokes at the food with his fork, sensing Crowley's nervousness and feeling it heighten his own.]

Pities us? Whatever for?

[identity profile] flash-serpent.livejournal.com 2005-10-28 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
She doesn't quite understand how delicate the Arrangement is, angel. I told her how, even after all these many years, we could each be called home. I do believe her exact words were "you're weighing an eternity of little earthly joys against maybe one night with the person you love. I wouldn't want to have to make that choice." I'll forgive her the narrowminded human notion of "one night,' but...[he scoops potatoes and a bite of meatloaf into his mouth and savors them, avoiding the end of the sentence]

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2005-10-28 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
[Aziraphale blinks at Crowley, food forgotten, as he replays the demon's words in his mind.]

[whispers] Quite. [He looks down at his plate, a very small smile on his lips.]

[identity profile] flash-serpent.livejournal.com 2005-10-28 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
And she seemed quite insistant that we have choices...as if we were equal in the Plan with the humans. [snorts]

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2005-10-28 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
It's difficult for them to understand.

Although...we do have a few choices, dear boy.

[identity profile] flash-serpent.livejournal.com 2005-10-28 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed, indeed, angel. I suppose you could Fall...but I certainly will never be Redeemed. Can't go back once you begin the descent and all that. [Spears several beans and points at Phale with them.] But day to day...yes, you're quite right. The small things. Who to tempt, when to thwart. Whether or not to make the ducks obese with pastries...[He smiles and laughs and takes the bite]

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2005-10-28 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
[Aziraphale laughs, then gives Crowley a fond smile.] We've made some big choices too, dear boy. For instance, with the You Know What.

[He decides the meatloaf, despite its somewhat unappetizing appearance, it rather tasty, and begins to make quick work of it.]

[identity profile] flash-serpent.livejournal.com 2005-10-28 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Bah...I thought we decided that was all part of the Ineffable. We didn't make a choice. Not really.

[He pushes his potatoes around with the tip of his fork, then looks up]

Right?

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2005-10-28 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
[Aziraphale points his fork at Crowley, punctuating his words] We chose. It just happened to work out that it was Ineffable.

[identity profile] flash-serpent.livejournal.com 2005-10-28 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well, then, we didn't really make the choice then, right? We did exactly as we were supposed to do...we didn't get in trouble because it was supposed to work out that way. But we don't have a line on the Ineffable, so it could have gone all wonky.

[He has an edge of panic in his voice. He clearly doesn't like this new way of thinking about things...it's uncomfortable. Both his legs bounce under the table]

[identity profile] a-phale.livejournal.com 2005-10-28 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
[Making a soft 'shushing' sound under his breath, Aziraphale reaches across the table and takes Crowley's hand.]

I really have no way of knowing, dear boy. No more than you do. But... [His voice trails off for a moment, as he tries to think of a way to comfort his friend.] You're probably right, my dear. You know the silly ideas I get sometimes.
