Veronica enters Luke's, chatting with her dad.

"... so I'm going to kill Marty next time I see him, even though he had that announcement on the radio that my cookies were not, in fact, made out of humans," she says.

She looks around and snags them a table. "This good?"

"I don't know why anyone who had ever tasted your snickerdoodles would think there was anything odd about them," Keith said with a smile. "Perfect table. So, this is the Luke's Diner I've been hearing so much about?"

"Yep. Way better food here than in the cafeteria."

She reads the board announcing the special and then asks, "So, did you have a nice day yesterday? I felt bad that I got tied up at the club fair and didn't get to spend the whole day with you."

After considering his menu options, Keith replied, "Oh, it was no problem - gave me plenty of time to scope out your surroundings and check up on security. I met with Dean Bristow, too. How was the fair?"

Marty walks into Luke's just in time to hear Veronica's threat. He spins around makes a mad dash out of the restaurant and back to campus where he locks himself in his dorm room.

"Dad, we've got really great security here. I keep telling you I'm safe."

Then she realizes what he said.

"You met with the Dean?"

Veronica spots Marty and jumps up from the table.

"Martin Blank, get your butt back here!"

"Of course - why not go straight to the source? I asked him about your detention, too. Nice man, if not very effusive."

"Dad! I told you, I got detention for missing homework. It wasn't a big deal."

"I just thought detention for missing one homework assignment was a little harsh, that's all. Is it so wrong to be concerned about my only child, living away from me for the first time, after she didn't exactly have the best year ever last year?" Keith asks, laying on his best concerned parent face.

Veronica sighs. She hates when her dad guilt trips her.

"No, Dad, it's not. I'm sorry." She forces a smile. "He didn't tell you about catching me in that supply closet with those boys, did he?" she teases.

Marty is like the wind. He's already hiding underneath his bed.

"Actually..." Keith says, winking.

Becoming serious again, he lowers his voice and asks, "Have you been keeping up with the news lately?"

She frowns.

"Just campus stuff. I kind of OD'ed on regular news over the summer, you know. Why what's up?"

"I don't want to upset you, Veronica... Has Logan mentioned anything about his father lately?"

"I don't really talk to Logan, dad."

A flash of fear crosses her face.

"He's not... out... is he?"

"Oh no, he's not out," Keith reassures. "He was just, uh, found in his prison cell inches away from death - beaten to a pulp, broken bones, the works. No one knows how anyone could have gotten into the locked cell. It's quite the mystery at this point."

Veronica gulps. She isn't quite sure how to process this news. After all, the man did try to kill her.

"It was probably a guard or something," she finally says.

"Probably. The police are reviewing surveillance tapes - I just wanted to make sure you knew what was going on. Are you okay?"

She nods.

"It's weird, you know. I feel absolutely no sympathy for him. And I'm not used to that."

Keith reaches out to take Veronica's hand. "That's completely understandable, after what you've been through. It's not your job to feel sorry for him." Talking about Aaron Echolls reminds Keith of something else. "Lilly's here - how are taking that? Is there some sort of counselor you could talk to if you felt you needed to?"

She smiles at his mention of Lilly.

"No, dad, I'm fine with Lilly being here. It was kind of weird at first, but now everything is good. I'm glad I have more time with her, you know?"

"I know - you two were the closest." Keith smiles at some memory of the two girls having fun.

"I've heard about Journalism and the newspaper - tell me about some of your other classes."

"Well, I'm also taking Speech Comm, Starting a Small Business and Ethics," she says.

"I really like my Speech Comm teacher. And in Small Business, we got to create a mock business with a partner. My friend, Vala, and I are doing a mock detective agency called Bristow's Angels."

Keith laughs at the thought of 'Bristow's Angels'. "Speakng of detective work, have you been putting your skills to use outside of classes too?"

"Not really, Dad. As weird as this place is, my detective skills haven't been needed much."

She tilts her head and smiles.

"Besides, you made me promise to give that up, remember?"

"'Much'?" he asks, raising an eyebrow.

"I was just checking up on you," he says, returning her smile. "I'm glad to hear you're finally getting the chance to be a normal student around here."
