Ching Tai, Thursday night
The NPC-run Chinese restaurant is cheerful, with Chinese characters painted in red on the walls and tables set with the ubiquitous Chinese Zodiac placemats. Lanterns sway overhead as the hostess ushers Angela and Marty to a booth in the back.

She reaches across the table and takes one of his hands. "So how was your day?"
no subject
Marty smiles and gives Angela's hand a little squeeze.
"Pretty good. There was a dog running around in Tick's class this morning which was kind of fun. Other than that I just sat at the library and checked out the new aide they hired."
no subject
"And if the dog is a little cute wolfie puppy, that's Cameron Mitchell."
no subject
Marty puts on a look of mock astonishment.
"The new aide dyes her hair? You mean it's not natural? And she doesn't look emo to me. You should probably get to know her better, because I'm betting she's actually a sweet person once you get past all that flannel."

"And I'll take your word for it on the aide, but ..." Angela dissolves in a fit of giggles. Something that sounds a little like, "I don't need to be jealous, do I?," emerges from them.
The NPOC waitress approaches, and Angela orders a pot of tea and shrimp with cashew nuts.

"I don't think you need to be jealous of anything. I'm a one red-head-girl kind of guy," Marty says with a grin.
"So how was your day?"
no subject
"It was an okay day," she says. "Just had journalism and Grissom's class, plus the library. And speaking of that, is it okay if I interview you as former security guy about law enforcement? I mean, interviewing your boyfriend is kind of weird, but Grissom didn't say I couldn't, so."
no subject
"I don't know how good of an interview I'd be. I was S.O. for maybe 20 minutes tops and even then I wasn't that great at it, but if you want I will."
The NPC waitress comes by with the food and lays it out and Marty nods to her in thanks.
"Hey! Here's an idea. You could interview Veronica Mars's dad. He's a P.I. out in California and I think he used to be sheriff."
no subject
"You and Veronica are getting to be pretty close friends," she says, and if you don't know her well her tone would read as neutral.
no subject
"Yeah. We're friends. Nothing more than that though. You know that, right?" Marty's voice has a trace of humor in it.

She gives him a lopsided smile and takes a bite of rice. Martin. Not Jordan, she thinks.

Marty voice trails off.

Finally, she puts them down. "So ... see, when I talk about him, he sounds like a dick. Which he wasn't, really. But short version? We broke up. I was just getting over him, and he and my best friend-" she winces -- "ex-best friend hooked up. In a car. And Brian Krakow caught it on tape, because he's a perv."
More chopstick doodling.
"I mean, we weren't together anymore, but it still hurt because it was so fast, y'know? So, um, I guess I have trust issues. Like I said, me, not you or Veronica."
no subject
Marty sighs. "I understand how you feel. And believe me when I say that I'm not planning on going anywhere. Okay?"
Marty then gets a sly grin on his face.
no subject
Then, noticing the grin, "What?" She speaks with affection in her voice.

Marty finishes his soup and pushes some noodles around on his plate.
"You trust me right?"
no subject
"And ... wait, a present? For me? I like presents."

"My fortune is, 'You will soon take a journey that brings you riches," Angela claims, though that's not quite what the slip of paper actually says. "So, want to show me?"
no subject
Marty cracks open his fortune and reads aloud "An empty stomach is a poor political ally."
Marty makes a face at the fortune and pays the bill.
"Come on. I'm sure your dying of curiousity." (http://www.livejournal.com/users/oatmanspatient/23475.html)
