Duncan gets himself a mug of coffee, a copy of the New York Times to peruse with the Scots newspaper he brought, and an apple pastry. He settles in at a table to people watch and read.

Camulus enters the Perk on his way back to the Falcon for the evening, intending on finding a quiet table at which to mark his slim pile of exams. He notices the newspaper of the other man - another teacher he vaguely recognised - and leaned over. "Excuse me," he said mechanically - one of many practical survival phrases, "If you're finished, could I have a look at your newspaper?"
