In the Park

After Math class, Kiki decides to take advantage of the nice weather and goes for a stroll in the park, hoping to clear her head. She wanders around the duck pond, laughing at Jiji's antics as he attempts to stalk the ducks, and tosses them some bread for being good sports and putting up with his harrassment. She suddenly realizes she's wandering in the direction of the Arms Hotel.

Bel only had one class on Fridays, so after Celtic Studies he decided to head into town to see if anything was going on. As he walked through the park he saw Kiki by the duck pond.

Awkward....

Kiki is suddenly very intent on tossing bread to the ducks. Jiji, noticing Bel, and noticing Kiki noticing-without-trying-to-notice Bel, redoubles his efforts to be amusing amongst the quacking ducks.

So. Very. Awkward...

All right, enough of this. Magical Theory class was going to be hard enough without having to avoid Kiki constantly. "Hey," he said, approaching her. "Can I talk to you for a few seconds?"

Kiki blinks in surprise. "Um," she says, arm still upraised in the act of tossing bread. She drops her hand. "All right, then. Um, what's up?"

She crosses her toes inside her shoes, hoping this will involve no repeat of his offers on New Year's Eve.

"About New Year's Eve," Bel began, "well, you're cute and all, but I'm a one witch demon. And, umm, I guess I was drinking too much champagne or something and got, uh, friendlier than I should have. I'm really sorry."

Feeling unspeakable relief, Kiki lets out her breath, which she hadn't even realized she'd been holding.

"I definitely wasn't myself that night, either," she answers. "I'm sorry, too - I hope you didn't get in trouble with Phoebe. I'm really don't know what got into me." She flushes with embarrassment.

[Kiki interacts with way more guys than girls, it's crazy! Luckily, she's finally straightening out a problem with Bel. Her obsession with Crowley is a long-standing and probably-will-never-end deal! Hahaha]

"We were all a little out of control that night," Bel said carefully. "Phoebe was, too, so she's totally understanding and isn't mad at you or me at all. You didn't get into any trouble with your date, did you?"

"Oh!" Kiki says, "No - that is, I - No."

With her date? No. With her vanished-without-a-word boyfriend? Yes.

Kiki takes refuge in small talk. "So, um, I heard you're working at the Arms for Mr. Crowley? I'm actually planning to stop by there today to say hello."

"Working for him?" Bel said. "Did he tell you that? I guess I'm kind of...an assistant or something." He wasn't about to say I do what he wants because I'm afraid he'll hurt Phoebe.

"I heard it from Mr. Aziraphale," Kiki explains. She's got an impression that Bel's uncomfortable, but attributes it merely to residual awkwardness. "I'm still working for him," she continues. "But I miss seeing Mr. Crowley around the shop."

Ever optimistic and perpetually naive, Kiki still is sure that Crowley isn't really evil. Not really.

"Yeah, it's shame what happened," Bel said, missing Aziraphale's apparent tempering of Crowley. "How has Mr. Aziraphale been? I haven't seen him since New Year's Eve I think."

"He's been okay - better than he was a week ago, that's for sure. He's adjusting," Kiki says, obviously concerned for him.

"They seemed to balance each other so well," Bel said. "Do you know what happened between them? It just seemed so sudden."

"Simply? Mr. Crowley got recalled to Hell. When he came back, I didn't think there was anything different about him. He was even nicer to me than when he had left, but..." Kiki shakes her head a little. "Mr. Aziraphale told me he had changed. That he was dangerous now."

Kiki looks over at Bel. "But I pointed out to him that if you and Phoebe are working for him now, and he didn't warn you both away, then he must be safe, right? So there's no reason I can't go and see him."

"I don't know," Bel said. "I mean, you saw how we weren't ourselves at the party, so I'd be careful around him just in case. Mr. Aziraphale wouldn't lie to you about him being dangerous, after all."

"No, he wouldn't," Kiki agrees. "But he also wouldn't release me from my promise not to see him if he thought Mr. Crowley would really hurt me. I just don't want Mr. Crowley feeling like his friends have abandoned him - but I'll still be careful," she assures hastily.
