DARLA
Darla sees four girls coming out of Caritas. Nice mixture: two blondes, a redhead and a brunette. She follows them until they cross the mouth of Phoenix Place.
This time, she doesn't even bother with the witty banter and the seeming helplessness. This time, she steps out of the shadow in full fright face and smiles at the four of them. "How lovely. Appetizers, main course, and dessert."
As quickly as she can, she grabs the wrist of one of the blondes and yanks her against her body. But instead of sinking her teeth into the little girl's neck, Darla holds a knife to her throat. "If any of you move, I'll slice her open."
***
VALA
Vala's eyes go wide and she instinctively steps back. But she's seen the face and the posters around town and she knows this isn't any random mugging. What she didn't have on her was anything vampire-slaying-related. "Uh," she looked at Izzie's terrified face. "Look, maybe we can work something out here?"
***
JANET
Janet froze, staring warily at the blonde woman holding a knife to Izzie. Darla. She'd seen the pictures. Vampire, and therefore far more dangerous than she looks. She wished like hell she had a zat on hand. Her grip on her backpack tightened--she carried so many books in it, she could use it as a weapon if she had to--and she inched her right hand toward her pocket. The syringes full of sedative that she carried were mostly for normal humans, but she carried one that was calibrated for Angel's body weight and additional stamina, just in case he ever became evil again. Darla was far more petite than Angel, but Janet had heard she was older. Did that make a difference? They'd never know unless she tried the syringe, and she'd use all three up if she had to.
***
ISABEL
Isabel couldn't move. She'd met Angel, he'd warned her there were other vampires in town, but she never expected to meet them. Mentally she cursed herself for not taking the announcement about town seriously.
***
IZZIE
Cold fear raced through Izzie's veins. Time seemed to stop. Not quite sure what was happening her eyes flew from Janet to Vala and back again.
***
DARLA
Darla looked around at the other three girls and laughed, catching the knife a little higher on the blonde's throat. "Work something out? How about I kill you, drain you dry, and dump your bodies off the dock? That sounds like a nice plan to me, don't you think?"
***
VALA
Vala worked her way around a bit to the side, trying to get the creature's attention split between her and Janet.
***
ISABEL
Isabel kept silent, trying to figure out if there was anyway to do something to help Izzie. At this point she'd even do something alien if it would help.
****
JANET
"How about you just leave us alone?" asked Janet dryly. First and foremost, they had get Izzie out of danger. She and Vala might be able to manage it. Janet gave Izzie a reassuring look and took one quick step forward as she unslung her backpack and swung it at Darla. She took another step forward, almost losing her balance with the weight of the books and the forward motion of her bag. Hopefully, holding on to Izzie was going to hamper Darla's reflexes significantly enough to let them hurt her. She gritted her teeth and prayed that her backpack connected.
***
DARLA
Darla grunted as the backpack connected. Snake-quick, she reached out and grabbed the backpack, hauling Janet closer, turning to her left to face Janet more fully. "You really want to get your friend here
killed, don't you?"
***
VALA
Seeing the monster's attention distracted, Vala quickly moved behind her, kicked viciously at the back of her knee, and tried to pull Izzie free.
***
JANET
Darla's strength, combined with the momentum from Janet's half-run forward, caused Janet to crash into the backpack. A particularly sharp corner of one of her textbooks jabbed her in the ribs and Janet cried out in pain. That might be a bruise. She couldn't tell right now; adrenaline was keeping her from feeling the full extent of her injuries. Out of the corner of her eyes, Janet could see Vala kicking at Darla, and hopefully pulling Izzie free.
Janet let go of the backpack strap, and reached her right hand deep into her pocket, fumbling for the largest syringe full of the strongest sedatives. I'd love to analyze that cranial bone structure, a part of her noted abstractly.
***
VALA
Vala saw the creature stumble, distracted, and managed to get her hands on Izzie. Stupid idiot boyfriend heroics rubbing off on me. Unfortunately, in pulling the girl free, Vala ended up off-balance between Izzie and her attacker.
***
DARLA
Darla howled in rage. The kick to her knee and the little redheaded girl barreling into her side managed to throw off her balance, but she kept her feet. The little blonde she was holding was wrenched away, so she grabbed again, this time the brunette's wrist with her left hand. One swift, sharp turn and the crack of bones could be heard, as with her right, Darla brought the knife in low under her ribs in her side.
***
VALA
Vala felt -- heard -- the bones in her left wrist crack. The agonized scream she tried to stifle at first came out loudly anyway as she felt the knife cut into her side.
***
PARKER
Passing by in a motorized rickshaw, Parker thought she heard a scream coming from down an alley. Forcing the taxi driver to pull over, she stopped, checked the safety on her .Sig, made sure her Holy Water handgun was secure, and ventured toward the mouth of the alley. "Hello? Who's there?"
***
ISABEL
Isabel recognized Parker's voice. Relieved to finally be able to do something she called out urgently, "Parker! We need help here!"
***
JANET
Shit, Vala's injured. They had to end this fast. Janet found her syringe and pulled it out of her pocket. She thumbed the cap off, and tightened her grip.
***
PARKER
Stalking forward, her gun in hand, Parker's eyes widened as she saw the situation in front of her, and recognized Darla. Bitch! Quickly, she went for her vampire-hurting weapon, and shoved the other in her pocket. "Hey! Blondie! Back the hell off!"
***
DARLA
Darla let the brunette go and turned back to the redhead. She grabbed the girl's hand and yanked her closer, sinking her nails into her arm until the blood flowed. She bared her fangs and wrenched the girl's head aside with her other hand. "Scream. I want to hear you scream."
***
VALA
Clutching her side, and the knife still stuck in it, with the one hand that was still working, Vala sank to her knees, gasping painfully.
***
ISABEL
"Christ Vala!" Isabel rushed over to her side and then turned her attention to where the vampire had Janet. This needed to end now. Before anyone else got hurt.
She flexed her hands nervously. She'd never tried, but maybe she could blast at the vampire the way Michael had blasted Pierce.
***
JANET
"Like hell," she muttered, then hissed in pain. She shoved the syringe into Darla's stomach, then depressed the plunger, flooding her system with enough sedatives to tranquilize several very large elephants. That's going to take some serious disinfecting.
***
PARKER
That was enough to have Parker pulling the trigger. Three paint-pellets filled with Holy Water went whizzing toward Darla in quick succession as Parker advanced. "Janet! Down, damnit!"
***
DARLA
Darla heard the gun and tried to jerk away. Bullets were uncomfortable even if they wouldn't kill her. But two of the three shots landed, splattering her with holy water. "You little bitch. I'm ripping out your throat next." She tried to turn sharply and felt the world spinning around her. Vaguely, she remembered a pinch of pain in her stomach. "What the hell...?"
Involuntarily, her hands let go of the redhead, and she stumbled back a pace, and then two. She shook her head, trying to clear it. "What did you DO?"
Without waiting for an answer, she whirled and ran up the dark road to the Manor.
***
PARKER
"Janet? God, what happened to Vala?" Parker hurried forward, holstering her weapon. "I've got a rickshaw waiting on the street. Isabel, could you grab Janet, I'll help Mal Doran. C'mon. Stagger, walk, stagger, walk."
