Fast Eddie's, Wednesday evening

After some handwavey planning, John and Aeryn head into the bowling alley for the meetup with Rory and Anakin. It is certainly not a double date, even if it might look that way. It is simply a friends outing. Which is probably a good thing, since Aeryn figures she'll spend half the time talking with Anakin about how everyone here is weird and this makes no sense anyway.

See, totally a friends outing.

John's already lacing up bowling shoes becase, come on, he hasn't done this in months.

"I need to find a blue ball. A blue ball. It's my lucky color."

"Dirty?" said Rory, who walked in just ahead of Anakin and just in time to hear that.

"There's dirty, too?" Anakin asked. In addition to throwing heavy projectiles?" He blinked at John's shoes. "And wearing someone else's footwear? Assuming those aren't John's, of course."

Aeryn stares at everyone. Kind of a lot.

"Someone else's footwear?"

"Not someone else's," John explains, hefting up a powder blue ball. "They belong to the bowling alley. Special for the lanes. Gotta wear them! They're neat!"

"Mine are my mom's," Rory said happily, pointing to her slightly too-large pink and yellow bowling shoes. "Can I have a pink ball? So that it matches my shoes, and plus? It kind of looks like a gumball."

Aeryn is still staring. Also, hoping they are joking.

And then she looks at Rory's shoes.

Anakin stared at John's shoes. Then Rory's.

"Absolutely not," he said.

"If you wanna bowl, you gotta wear the pimptastic shoes," John says, twirling his in front of him. "Come on, Aeryn. I bet you and Anakin can get shoes in pink and baby blue."

More staring. "I just heard you say the word 'pimp-tastic' and I hope that is just a translator microbe malfunction," she says. "My boots are fine."

"Actually, it's really best to wear the shoes because your boots - and this applies to both of you - will slip. They use waxy stuff and so when you go up to bowl, you'll either scratch the floor, or slip and fall down, or both. John and I will laugh at you if that happens," Rory said seriously.

"I'm not wearing pink shoes," Anakin said firmly. "Do they come in...non-terrifying colors?"

"Yeah," John says and laughs. "Red and green, mostly. They go by size. Not sure what size you are Anakin but Aeryn's about a size fifteen," he says and skitters away quickly after saying that.

Aeryn smiles. It's not the best smile. "You're paying for that later," she warns. "I'm already planning."

John blows her many kisses and retrieves the shoes from the counter. He hands one pair to Aeryn and one pair to Anakin.

"Don't smell them, whatever you do."

Anakin stared. He wasn't sure if he'd blinked since coming into the bowling alley. "...good to know," he said finally, then went to pick out a ball.

It was heavy, it was dinged up, but it was black and that's all Anakin really cared about. "What does 18 mean?" he asked.

"How much it weighs," Rory said, selecting a shiny pink ball with a 6 on it. "That's...kind of heavy."

Aeryn's been watching everyone else, and has figured out what the holes on the ball are for. This means she's also discovering another problem in that she can't find any black ones that fit her fingers. When she's gone through them all, she starts looking from the top row down again. After that, she has to look at the colored ones.

Picking up a yellow one and frowning at it, she says, "Someone call Isabel, I hate this one. It needs to be changed."

"Can she fix my shoes, too?" Anakin asked eagerly. "Green and red stripes aren't exactly me," he said, staring down at them.

"Aeryn, there's this really nice neon green one that might fit," John suggests. ""And this is not Aeryn and Anakin's Fashion Show, yo. No audience here to take your pictures."

Aeryn frowns at the ball. "It looks like vomit. I'm not using that."

"It does not look like vomit. You're mixing up bodily fluids," Rory told her. "And if you guys don't hurry up, I will take pictures, or show off ones I already have in my phone."

She smiled very sweetly at Anakin. "I don't think John and Aeryn saw those pictures I took at the party on Saturday, for instance."

Anakin pointed a finger at Rory. "You are very, very mean," he said, sitting down in the terribly comfortable molded plastic chair and looking sadly at his shoes.

Aeryn's not pouting as she takes the neon green ball- which does look like vomit- and puts on her stupid shoes.

On second thought, she takes off the shoes, then leaves them right where they are until it's her turn and she has to wear them.

"Rory!" John waves her over as he takes a seat at the computerized bowling scoreboard thingy. Yes, thingy. "Make up a bowling name for Anakin."
