The Perk, Wednesday

With Wilson on clinic duty for half the day, and no classes or office hours to prepare for this week, Aziraphale found himself heading down to the Perk for some apple spice tea and a scone. He was still riding high from the 'birthday' celebration of the day before, and now had a much better understanding of why people celebrated them. It was an amazing feeling, knowing there were people who were pleased you'd simply been created.

Aziraphale found a table where he could see out the window and settled in with his tea and a crossword puzzle.

Bel needed to get out of the dorms before he went crazy thinking about the trouble he was in, so he headed out to town. He stopped at the Perk to get some coffee, hoping the caffeine would provide some sort of magical solution.

He saw Phale sitting inside and gave him a quick nod.

A bit early for her meeting with Luke, Isabel came in, ordered a coffee and a muffin for a late breakfast, and sat down with her laptop to start figuring out exactly where she'd like to go in D.C. tomorrow.

Aziraphale smiled at Bel, and gestured toward one of the empty chairs at his table, in case he wanted to sit down.

Isabel smiled and gave a small wave as she went to order her breakfast.

Looking up as Isabel waved, Aziraphale gave her a bright smile in return.

"Good day, Miss Evans, I hope you had a nice Halloween."

"It was fun," she said with a laugh. "Even if we did have to battle a small growling pumpkin for our Lo Mein."

Bel hesitated a moment, then sat down. "Hey," he said with a forced smile. "How was your day yesterday?"

He had to chuckle at that. It was amazing the things that just didn't surprise a person after a few months in Fandom. "As long as all it did was growl, I suppose that isn't so bad then," he replied, smiling. "Did you go out trick-or-treating?"

That question earned Bel a huge smile. "Yesterday was wonderful, Belthazor. Really wonderful. Thank you so much for your message, it was so unexpected, and you don't know how much it meant to hear from all my friends."

"Glad to hear it," Bel said, happy someone had had a good day. "Birthdays are kind of a new thing for me, too."

"It growled and tried to be fierce. But it was wee, it had no teeth, and we were hungry. We won." Isabel smiled and shook her head. "My boyfriend and I decided to stay in and celebrate on our own. Besides, Greg and too much sugar would actually be very scary."

Aziraphale could tell there something wrong -- more wrong than usual -- and he cocked his head at Bel and looked speculative.

"There's something troubling you, isn't there? Why don't you tell me about it? I promise not to give you any advice unless you ask for it, but sometimes it helps just to be able to tell someone."

"I did see a few students who probably could have benefited from a more limited sugar intake last night," Aziraphale laughed. "It sounds as though you had a nice time, despite the growling pumpkins. And this being Fandom, we'd all have been terribly disappointed, I think, if there hadn't been something odd happening."

"That's very true," she agreed. "I actually had been thinking about that the other day when I was thinking of my plans for the break. Monday, hang out. Tuesday, deal with whatever chaos Fandom creates for Halloween. Wednesday, meet Luke for hot chocolate at the Perk. I really think I've been here to long."

Bel looked around nervously to make sure no one was close enough to eavesdrop. "Um, I'm in trouble," he said miserably.

"Quite," Aziraphale replied, laughing. "Although I suppose it does prepare you for whatever you might encounter once you leave. After all, there won't be much that could come along that will be stranger or more surprising than the things you see here in Fandom."

Aziraphale waved his hand dismissively when he saw Bel's concern over eavesdroppers. "No one has any interest at all in hearing you, my dear," he said. "Tell me what sort of trouble. Is it your stepfather again?"

"In more ways then one," Isabel said with a snicker. "The funny thing is, I came here looking for a place to just be normal. Boy was I surprised by the purple dragon that was at the welcome party. And it only got weirder from there."

Bel nodded. "He sent me a message with a job he wanted me to do, and when I went to tell him I wasn't going to do it, he...he has my father's soul. And he's gonna destroy it if I don't do what he says."

"Well...in a place as full of strangeness as this is, I suppose everyone is normal, aren't they?" Aziraphale hadn't ever seen the purple dragon, but he'd enough other unexpected things during his time in Fandom. "Perhaps that's the whole point, really. A place where there's no such thing as 'too weird', so that we can all concentrate on learning and experiencing, rather than fitting in."

Aziraphale scowled, and his hand tightened around his teacup. Souls were supposed to be off limits. People who'd moved on, to their punishment or their reward, weren't supposed to be used as pawns.

"That's unacceptable," he murmured in a low voice. "He has no right, but I can't imagine you had any choice, did you? Of course you had to do as he asked. Anyone would."

"I like that point. Because even though I'm weird," she said holding up her fingers to put quotes around the word. "I do feel normal here. And safe. I've never felt like that back home. Of course back there I never had what constituted a small army looking out for me."

"It's a shame, honestly, how many students here have that same sort of background. Coming from a place where they don't feel safe or welcome. I do hope that, at least for a little while, we can help make Fandom a sort of haven where you can feel safe and protected."

Aziraphale felt very strongly on this point, and it probably showed in the very serious tone of voice he used.

"I can't think that there's a single teacher, administrator, or business owner in this town who wouldn't step up and do whatever they could to help if one you needed it. And really, that's the way it ought to be everywhere."

"Oh I do," Isabel said, nodding vigorously. "My brother came out for Parents Weekend and panicked when he realized that everyone knew what we were. He just doesn't get that it doesn't matter here."

Thinking of the rescue mission to save Aeryn, done without any adult help except for the borrowing of Vader's ship, Isabel couldn't help but laugh. "I believe you. It's just that my friends have this terrible tendency to leap to the rescue themselves without waiting for the grown-ups."
