Aereopagitica: Monday [11/6]

Lana opened the store then sat down behind the counter heavily. She looked absolutely devastated and as if she'd been crying most of the morning. Which she had been.

Come on in to buy a book, but don't expect much from her.

Funny that Matilda had choosen today to come visit. She walks in and sees Lana isn't looking too good. She approaches slowly, "Hey Lana... Are you alright..?"

Lana somehow managed a crooked little smile. "Hi, Matilda. I'm... fine... What can I do for you?"

Phoebe hadn't seen her BFF since Cheerleading due to the whole being sick thing and she sought her out at work.

Of course, being an empath...

"Lana? Lana what's happened?"

The tears started up again immediately. "He's gone, Phoebe. He's gone. It's Shep all over again."

Phoebe wrapped her arms around Lana. "Start at the beginning. Tell me what happened."

"We, I... I was so happy, Phoebe. We finally made love and last week was just so amazing." She clung to her friend. "But I couldn't stop thinking about how last break when Shep and I finally..."

It became harder and harder for her to speak as the tears came faster. "And then he left the next week. And Jim got mad when I said something, but this morning his dad called and he's leaving, Jim's leaving."

Phoebe stroked her hair, just holding her. "Okay, first, Jim is not like Shep. I don't believe for one second he would leave if he didn't have to. Second of all, I know in my gut he will be back. Jim loves you, Lana."

She held Lana tightly to her, letting her cry and pondering thoughts of revenge against Jim's father for making Lana cry.

"Shep didn't want to go either. And when he went he thought it would only be a few weeks. And Jim's dad..." she shook her head. "He already told Jim he had to break up with me before. I want him to come back and I know he wants to, but his dad..."

She tried to get herself under control, but couldn't quite manage it. "Why, Phoebe? Why does this always happen when I fall in love with someone?"

"He will come back if I have to go to his house and drag his ass back here," Phoebe promised. She was near tears herself at Lana's pain. "I don't know, Lana. I don't know why this shit always happens to such good and loving people."

"I can't do it, Phoebe. I can't hope. I can't try and make myself believe that he might come back. I can't. It would kill me to do that and have it not happen. I can't believe any more. It's too hard. It hurts too much."

"I only came to visit you." She said with a little smile of her own.

Phoebe continued to hold her friend and gave her what comfort she could. "Don't say that, Lana. Without hope you lose the very spark of life." Oh she really wanted to go have words with this Dad of Jim's.

"Oh," Lana's not very good smile faltered even more. "This maybe isn't the best... Jim left today and I'm not..."

She shook her head, "Sorry."

"It's too much," Lana said. "Maybe..."

"No," she shook her head, feeling fresh pain lance through her. "I can't. Not now. Please, just... Just help me get through this without offering hope. I can't take any more of this. I don't have anythig left."

Matilda nodded understandingly. "I'm not going to pry. Sometimes talking about it makes it worse. Focus on feeling better okay Lana?"

"It's just... it hurts so much I feel like I could curl up and die. And he says he'll be back and I know he wants to, but..." Her voice fell to a whisper. "I don't think he will."

Matilda summons Oliver Twist off a shelf with her telekinesis and in drops down in front of Lana. "I hope he does... But in either case... for now the best thing to do is to try and cheer yourself up. Maybe read something." She smiles reassuringly.

Lana managed a faint smile. "Thanks, Matilda. Maybe I will. I take it you're recommending this?"

"Well it's MY favorite... It's nothing topical for making you feel better about your situation or anything like that. It's just a book I like to read when I'm upset."

"Thanks, Matilda. I'll give it a try."

"Feel better soon. Inner strengh is sort of hard to come by but... I'd say it's one of the most admirable qualities. And I know you have lots of it hiding close enough for you to find it." She nods and head for the door with a wave.

"I will always be here to get you through anything you need me for, Lana," She held her friend. "We'll get you through today and then we'll go from there. I'll call Cole and let him know I'm staying with you for a little bit."

Lana nodded. "Thank you. Thank you so much." She wiped at her face, trying to calm herself. "I'd appreciate that. But I don't want you and Cole to not be together. I hate for you to put ourself out for me."

"Shh," Phoebe said, wiping away some tears off Lana's cheek. "You're my best friend and Cole won't have a problem with me staying with you. And it's not me putting myself out. It's me wanting to be there for my best friend."

"Thank you," Lana whispered. "I'll feel better not being alone. Jim said I should stay in his room, but it would be hard to be there without him and alone."

"You won't be alone," Phoebe said softly. "I'll pack an overnight bag and talk to Cole and then we'll stay wherever you want to stay."

Lana nodded. "I think I want to stay in his room, to feel closer to him, if you don't mind."

"I don't mind at all. I'll meet you there."

"Okay. I have class 7th period, but I'll be there after that."

"I'll see you there, Lana." She hugged her again.
