The Arms Hotel Lobby, Wednesday [11/21]

Hoshi was not content to stay at the front desk today. She kept wandering into the kitchen to pester Gunther for some of her favorite foods. Finally, Gunther brought out a tray of everything Hoshi was asking for and ordered the sous chef to block all access to the kitchen.

Someone needs to fill her in on this Thanksgiving thing.

As usual for me, I'm around until 5 PM and then SP for the rest of the night.

Wonder if I have enough time to go out for sushi.

Hoshi! There was a Hoshi here. Jack went up to talk to her.

...save me some ginger root and wasabi?

"What will it be today? The soup? The gyoza? Tempura?" asked Hoshi.

"All three?" he asked. "Listen, I wanted to ask if you're doing anything for Thanksgiving. Or if you'll even be here."

"Where else would I go? Even if I could go back to my century, they don't celebrate Thanksgiving in Japan," said Hoshi as she submitted Jack's order to the sous chef. "I was just going to see what people are doing tomorrow, maybe do some cooking in the common room."

"That sounds like a great idea. That's... actually, that was what my idea was. Get a few people together, cook a turkey, and celebrate."

"Turkey? I was thinking to some spring rolls and soba noodles," said Hoshi.

And that's when Gunther arrived with the Tofurky (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tofurky) on a platter.

"Hey, it should be as much food as possible, right?"

"What else do they serve at this Thanksgiving thing?" asked Hoshi, looking back and forth between Jack and Gunther.

"Turkey. Candied yams. Cranberry sauce, straight out of the can. Mashed potatoes with gravy. Stuffing. Deviled eggs."

Jack's stomach rumbled.

"But if it's supposed to be true to the Pilgrims and stuff like from history classes, then it's just whatever food you can bring to the table."

"Candied yams? Sauce out of a can? Stuff? Sounds disgusting," said Hoshi, making a face.

"It's not," he stated. "It's... tradition. And you gotta have the sauce out of the can because it's got to be, y'know, round."

Mmmmmm... round sauce....

"How can sauce be round?" asked Hoshi. "And what is this stuff stuffed into?"

"It's.... it's cranberry sauce," he said, like that explained it. "It's cold, it comes from a can. So you just slice it up into sections. LIke, uh, bread. Or something. And the stuffing is breadcrumbs that's put in the turkey and baked."

"But when the sauce warms up, it melts, right? And why would you stuff breadcrumbs in a turkey?" asked Hoshi.

Gunther, meanwhile, was staring at Hoshi in horror. How could she not know about stuffing?

Jack's face mirrored Gunther's. "Hey. Can you show her what we're talking about?" he asked the weird German chef guy.

"You eat the sauce before it gets warm. Like Jell-O. And... the breadcrumbs... Taste? I dunno." You just do!

Gunther wanted to part of this mess. He left Jack's food and fled back to his kitchen.

"So if it's more like cranberry Jell-O, then why do they call it sauce? Do they serve it as dessert? Wouldn't it make more sense to use the breadcrumbs as part of a batter before frying turkey cutlets?" asked Hoshi. She was on a roll with the questions.

"Hey, whoa, slow down," he said, both hands up in a "Don't Shoot!" gesture. "It's sauce, served in a whole thing. It's... it's Thanksgiving. Everything's either on a buffet where you take what you want as long as you don't take too much of Aunt Ethel's tuna casserole, or it's all on the table and you just keep passing the dishes around until they're gone. I have no clue about stuffing. I'm sure it's in a cookbook or something, or on one of the computer things."

Oooh, pork-filled gyoza . . . *drools*
