The Beach: Saturday afternoon

There was a swirl of butterflies in the air above the beach, spiralling up into the sky and back down.

As they gathered, clouds rolled in, thunder rumbled, and lightning spiked down through the sky. A single flap of a Quantum Weather Butterfly's wing could create localised weather; several hundred flapping together created chaos, and the sand rose up in a swirl as a mini-tornado touched down.

The butterflies were there for a purpose, however, and as they split off into pairs, the chaos settled, and each pair fluttered off towards various parts of the island.

They left summer in their wake: clear skies and a baking warmth, almost shocking after the cold of winter.

Enjoy it while it lasts!

[ooc: It's summer at the beach! The warmth will last until a few hours after sundown. Post is open to all.]

Having stood here for a few hours by now, coat heavy on his frame, Cable glanced after the butterflies as they left.

And figured he'd probably dressed entirely wrong for the occasion, if he'd seen this coming. "Interesting."

Lana had wandered down to the beach, feeling a little lonely with Chris gone. When she discovered the butterflies, she stayed to watch them, delighted both to see them and to find the weather warm enough that she could take off her jacket and sit in the sun.

Such a rare occasion as summer in the midst of December was meant to be enjoyed. That's why Mary snuck out of work early and was sitting on the beach in a blue bikini.

Although he'd been drawn to the beach by the crack of thunder and lightning Mohinder was only a little suprised to find sunshine and departing butterflies.

Opting not to look a gift horse in the mouth he settled down by the edge of the beach and, rolling up his shirt-sleeves, started to toss pebbles into the water.

After saying goodbye to Josh and finding nothing of particular value in the few things he might have forgotten, Vala found herself on the beach, walking along and thinking, which stopped abruptly when she spotted the new adult on the beach, throwing rocks into the water for no apparent reason.

"Is there a rock-eating monster in there who needs a snack?"

Hey, it was as good an explanation as any.

[identity profile] offthelisthero.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
And that was enough for Mohinder to pause, at least momentarily, tossing the stone from one hand to the other.

"I do hope not." He flicked a glance at the water, then looked back at Vala. "But I think people would complain if I threw rocks at them."

[identity profile] spacepiratevala.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
She grinned. "I think that depends on how hard you're throwing the rocks."

[identity profile] offthelisthero.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Really?" Mohinder smiled back. "Statements like that should be tested." And he lightly tossed a pebble at her.

[identity profile] spacepiratevala.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
She eyed him as the pebble tapped her in the arm, then fell to the ground, completely unimpressed except for the part where he'd thrown a rock and demonstrated that he had a sense of humor. "I'm Vala. Do you always test what people tell you?"

[identity profile] offthelisthero.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Mohinder Suresh." He introduced himself.

"And I try not to take anything at face value. Even from such an honest face as yours."

[identity profile] spacepiratevala.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Vala resisted the instinct to check behind her to see who Mohinder was talking to, because that was a rookie mistake. "That's a good policy. What do you do when you're not being skeptical?"

[identity profile] offthelisthero.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
"On the island, I teach - communications," Mohinder clarified. "Off-island I'm something of a professional sceptic. I work as-- a freelance geneticist."

"How did you find your way to Fandom?" he asked, curious.

[identity profile] spacepiratevala.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh! I teach up at the school, as well. A, um, broad range of subjects," she admitted, thinking of courses past, "but most recently religions. How do you do genetics work freelance? Do you just grab hair from people and run off?"

Vala shrugged a shoulder and raised her face to the sun. "I stole a spaceship and landed here, mostly by accident. You?"

[identity profile] offthelisthero.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
"It might be easier that way," Mohinder laughed, then shrugged, "but it wouldn't pay very well. I generally work on private commission from companies or individuals."

"You stole a spaceship? Won't somebody want it back?" Mohinder glanced involuntarily up at the sky, and then at Vala. "A friend recommended this as a secure - and quiet - place. I haven't yet figured out how to repay him," finished Mohinder, half-amused.

[identity profile] spacepiratevala.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
"You could always throw larger rocks at the liar who told you it was quiet once you work on your arm," she commented, then grinned, "Oh, he came and collected it already, but I was here and established by then. What kind of work, specifically?"

[identity profile] offthelisthero.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
"Perhaps. Though I was thinking of something more subtle than a rock." Mohinder picked up a slightly larger stone and lobbed it into the ocean. "And my arm needs work?" he asked.

"Usually, testing and therapy for rare genetic disorders." Mohinder answered her. "It can sometimes be all too literally a cut-throat business."

[identity profile] spacepiratevala.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
"More subtle?" She considered, then bent down and picked up a rock, then lobbed it into the ocean. It went about three inches further than Mohinder's, if that. Enjoying the ability to tease someone else, she pointed out, "The players on television seem to be able to throw much harder than you do."

"Science is more dangerous than people would think, isn't it?" Vala glanced back at him. "Are you having much success?"

[identity profile] offthelisthero.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Mohinder took up another stone. "He has a tendency to shoot first and ask questions later." He threw again, the rock going a little further this time. "They're professional athletes." Mohinder protested, mock-seriously, "They spend all the time practising with their right arm."

"In my research? Or in not getting my throat cut?" Mohinder shook his head. "Both have gone well so far."

[identity profile] spacepiratevala.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
"Sometimes there's no time to ask questions," she commented, choosing another stone. "I still can't believe that's a real job on this planet--and with some kind of celebrity attached."

Vala threw the rock, but it arced high and landed short, with a big splash. "Must be hell on their social lives."

"Uh...both? I mean congratulations? How likely is it that they'll try again?"

[identity profile] offthelisthero.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
"With some shooting there's little point to asking later." Mohinder focussed on Vala's words, "You're not from this planet? May I take a DNA sample?"

Mohinder stepped back, weighing the stone in his hand before he threw deliberately short, aiming for a bigger splash.

"Thank you." Mohinder smiled, grimly, as he continued. "I think the sword through the chest stopped him permanently."

[identity profile] spacepiratevala.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
"What do you need it for, and where will you be doing your research?" She asked, cautious on this issue, particularly with the Goa'uld marker still present in her blood stream. "Do you have links to the military here?"

"Sword through the chest?" She blinked. "Yours, or the other person's?"

[identity profile] offthelisthero.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
"I believe the condition is limited to a few specific genetic markers. It..." Mohinder brought himself up sharply, aware he could talk for hours on the subject, and noticing her caution. "I've no military ties and the preliminary indicator is a simple blood test, if you'd like to take some time to consider it."

Mohinder smiled. "Neither my sword nor my chest. I'm as familiar with weapons as I am rocks." He tossed one up and caught it.

[OOC - Sorry, must crash. Sleep]

[identity profile] spacepiratevala.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
"I would. Thank you for not pushing." She'd think about it, but so far she trusted him and would probably let him have the blood sample. "You seem to do okay with rocks."

[ooc: NP! Night, and sleep well!]

Naminé laughed, and pulled out her sketchpad. The beach was gorgeous; it would be nice to get some scribbles done in the warm weather.
