Joanna was doing her nails. She had chipped one the night before in a mishap with a shrimp fork. She was also on her second bottle of champagne. The mishap had been very traumatic.

I was going to let the world end, but I decided to be nice.

During Fraser's lunch break ~~and because his player was slacking at work~~, he wandered into town and stopped at a place he hadn't yet visited yet. He tucked his hat under his arm and looked around.

"What sort of tickets do you sell here?" He was kind of slow sometimes.

Joanna very pointedly glanced out at the sizable and flashy miniature golf course and then over at the go-kart track. "The paper kind," she replied dryly, before blowing on a nail.

"Would you like one?"

"If I had the time, I would," he said, following her glance and nodding. Hey, he was slow. "I was just in town for a walk and thought I'd stop in since I hadn't been here since you opened. I don't believe we've met as of yet. Constable Benton Fraser, RCMP."

"Constable?" Joanna loved a man in uniform. "And what is a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police doing all the way down here? And where might you be hiding your horse?" She leaned forward and cocked an eyebrow at him.

"I've actually been down here for over two years now," he said, smiling. "I was offered the job from a previous principal. I've become sort of a liaison between the school and the Canadian consulate in Chicago. As for my horse, he's in a safe place. It'd be awfully hard to rein him in a place such as this."

"Well that's a pity," Joanna said, sticking her lip out in a small mock pout. "I do so love riding, and it has been far too long since I've had the opportunity."

"I'm sorry to hear that," Fraser said geniunely before adding, "I haven't actually taken my horse out to ride in quite some time. I might not even remember how to do so."

Later, Fraser would wonder how he so often got into these type of conversations without knowing it.

"They say it's like riding a bicycle -- once you know how you never really forget. The question is," she said, looking him over, "were you any good in the first place." She smiled up at Fraser. "And I think you have a talented look about you."

"I like to think myself quite good," he said, nodding firmly. "I've had quite a lot of practice in many different situations and I haven't received any complaints as of yet. And thank you kindly for the compliment. I look talented?"

"You most certainly do," she said. Her interest was now seriously peaked.

"I might be making an egregious assumption here, but how would you like to buy me dinner sometime?" Joanna asked, figuring him for the old fashioned type.

"Dinner?" Fraser thought about it for a moment. "You're not afraid you'd find me rather dull company? I've been known to be dull."

"I'm finding you thoroughly fascinating right now, so I'm willing to take the risk," she responded. "You can tell me all about your horse and all the practice you've had riding. I love tales about riding."

"Oh, well, thank you kindly," he said and blushed a little. "I don't know if I've met someone, here, at least, who was interested in riding such as you seem to be. I've many a tale about that."

Joanna placed a hand on her chest and took a deep breath. Had she just swooned? She thinks she might have swooned.

"I do so hope you're long winded, Constable Fraser," she said, blinking rapidly. "Because you'll find me a very good listener."

Smiling pleasantly, Fraser said, "I can go on and on when properly motivated. I believe it all depends on the topic and the motivation."

"Oh, I don't think motivation will be a problem at all," Joanna replied. She wasn't used to feeling so out of sorts over a man. She eyed the empty champagne glass behind the counter.

"That's promising," he said, grinning like the stupid fool he was. "Then, I could, of course, buy you dinner sometime."

"When is good for you?" Joanna asked, knowing she could clear her schedule any time she liked.

"Most evenings are perfectly open," he said. "I work everyday but my evenings are usually free unless the island is being invaded by random aliens or mermaids or an infectious plague."

"How about you pick me up tomorrow evening," Joanna suggested. "I live at 23 Griffin Way. It's hard to miss."

"Very well," Fraser said, nodding and smiling. "I'll do that. And I have a map if I get lost."

He really did.

"Tomorrow, then."

"I'll see you then," Joanna replied, stopping herself from suggesting that he wear his uniform. If things went well, there would be time for that later.

"And stop back by for a round of golf sometime. It will be, how do they say, on the house."

"Thank you kindly," he said, smiling once last time at her before nodding and heading off.

Joanna watched him walk away, nodding in approval. Then she went back to her nails, and thought about which diamonds to wear to her dinner date.
