Luke's Diner, February 7 (Thursday)

There was a huge table in the middle of the diner today with what looked like a very large 3-D topographical map of the U.S. on it -- Yitzhak and the busboy, in a rare and disturbing show of agreement, had finally had it with the cook's epic geography skills fail. (He persisted in thinking that it was just a quick hop across the state line from Colorado to Tennessee. Yitzhak had probably traveled every crappy back road to stay in every roach-trap motel in the lower 48 and felt that if he knew this stuff, the cook seriously had no excuse.) To that end, they'd made him cook up a batch of fifty pancakes in the shapes of the states and assemble them.

. . . then Yitzhak had gotten distracted by piling fresh fruit on the arrangement for mountain ranges, dusting confectioner's sugar on top of the berries for snow, and drawing out rivers and lakes with blueberry syrup.

At the moment, he was using a pair of tweezers to put chocolate chips on the pancake map in the approximate locations of all the towns he'd visited while touring with Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

One might almost think he was having fun.

Luke's is open, and no, he's really not having fun. Honest.
