Joanna was on her mobile phone. She was talking to an art agent somewhere in Paris.

"Good afternoon," Lucas greeted his boss, hands deep in the pocket of his hoodie, trying to stay warm and confident.

"I'll wait till you're done," he said, taking a step back. "I needed to talk to you, not buy tickets." He wondered if she didn't remember he was an employee.

"I was hoping to find out how my work performance has been," Lucas started. "I really like working here and wondered if there were higher level positions available." Or just ones that paid better.

"I've managed to fix all the broken go karts, and I've kept up with maintenance on the holes in addition to my normal ticket selling duties," Lucas offered. "I'm really just hoping for a bigger role in the company, with pay to match."

Meaning he needed money. Desperately.

He wondered if telling her part of his medical drama might get him more money. What the hell, he had nothing to lose.

"Actually, I need it for my heart medicine." The irony of him having a heart condition was not lost on Lucas.

"It's some genetic thing," Lucas explained, wishing he was too young for it. "My, uh, father has it, too."

"Thanks, Ms. Stayton," it was a long shot getting more money, but Lucas was glad he'd been mostly successful. He turned to leave, giving her a nice view of his hip hugging jeans.

Lucas paused and turned to face her again.

"Metoprolol," he said, surprised by the question. "Why?"
