The York Gallery; Tuesday [ 06/05 ]

Usually, Charlotte wasn't spending much time in the gallery on a Tuesday, but she had a lot of work to do. The Matsuyama exhibit was coming down, and she had a lot of measuring and plotting to do for how the next one to come in will be arranged and set up and placed.

There was a sign in the large windows announcing that the gallery was closed for the installation of a new exhibit, but the door was open to let in the cool breeze of the day and to keep Charlotte wondering if she should just give up on working, do this all tomorrow, and then perhaps tentatively go out and enjoy the fact that the island was relocated, despite the fact that she was really quite confused by it.

Poking his head into the gallery, Teddy looked around.

"Hello? Miss York?"

Charlotte had been on the floor, measuring out the distance between a certain spot on the wall and the floor itself, when Teddy came in and it had been so quiet and nice so far that she hadn't expected to be interrupted and she jumped slightly and she let go of the measuring tape.

Right into her face.

"Ow." She had her hand to her face a moment, scrunched up from the sharp, slapping pain before shaking her head and rubbing the spot, hoping that it wouldn't bruise or turn red or anything, and then she looked toward the voice.

"Oh, hi, Teddy!" Charlotte beamed at him with a smile that tried to cancel out the fact that, yes, she'd just smacked herself in the face with a tape measure. "Don't tell me you've come in to help on your week off."

Not that she'd have minded, of course.

He certainly hadn't been trying to injure his boss today.

Smooth move, Altman. Smooth move.

"Are you okay?"

It wasn't as if it was Teddy's fault; those measuring tapes were tricky devices! And Charlotte was used to just hiring some guys in really tight blue jeans to do this. She stood up and waved a hand dismissively. "Oh, yeah, fine. It was just a little smack, that's all. No big deal."

Nodding slowly, he looked around. "Um, actually I needed to talk to you about this summer."

"Yeah?" Charlotte's head tilted. "What's up?"

"I'm going to visit family--" Oh yeah, still weird to say. "For a bit. And won't be around."

The smile that had started to surface when Teddy mentioned visiting family dropped away with sagging shoulders once he got to that last part. "Oh," she said. "I see. Well, that's definitely an acceptable reason; how long is for a bit? Did you want me to keep a spot for you here for when you get back?"

"Um, about half the summer. You don't have to hold the job for me, I don't want to put you out with this or anything!"

"And I wouldn't want to put you out of a job just for visiting family!" Charlotte remarked back. "But how about we just see where things stand when you get back, yeah?"

He nodded, smiling thankfully at her. "Thank you! It's kinda last minute, sorry."

Charlotte waved her hand a little. "Don't worry about it," she said with a light smile back. "Just be glad you pulled this on the week we're closed for the new installation, and a week before I hear the next semester starts so I can hopefully wrangle in someone to cover you. But I understand completely; family's really important, so you just have fun, okay?"

"I will! I'll um... try to bring back something from the trip for you if you want."

"Awww!" Charlotte beamed. "That'd be so sweet, Teddy! You don't have to, but I'd definitely appreciate it. Where are you going, anyway? Just up to New York for a bit?"

"Um..." How to explain again. "No, I'm helping my sister rebuild a church."

"Ohhh, that's different!" Charlotte commented. "But so nice of you guys, giving over your time to rebuild a church! Where at?"

"Space?"

Dale rapped on the door frame as he entered. "Hello? Charlotte?"

Charlotte blinked.

"You mean, outer space?"

"Yeah. She's um... we didn't actually meet until recently and I think she's trying to get to know me better and..." He scuffed the floor with his feet. "Yeah."

"Back here!" Charlotte called out from the back of the gallery, where she was currently on a ladder to make a few measurements from the ceiling. She quickly got her numbers, jotted them, and then started down the ladder. "Don't mind the mess of place, I'm just getting things ready to be shipped out..."

"New exhibit coming in?" Dale asked as he followed her voice. "If so I can come back at a time when you are not busy.

"..Well," Charlotte said after a moment with a small nod, "that's definitely going to be a more interesting gift from the trip that I thought..."

"Oh, don't be silly," Charlotte said, waving her hand and doing a much better job of closing the tape measure this time than she did when Teddy had come in. "I've only just started, and I've got the whole week to set up. I can certainly take a little bit of a break." She gave Dale a smile, because his company was definitely a worthy cause for a recess from work.

"I hope so," Teddy replied sheepishly.
