Luke's Diner, May 31

When Michael opened the diner today, there were no specials. There were just bowls of various and carefully sorted candy lined up along the counter.

He'd have a dessert made with whichever people picked.

Luke's was open.

He didn't come to this place much, since dining out was too expensive in his opinion to really be practical, but he wanted to find Michael and it was usually a good bet that he'd be here. When he poked his head in and saw the other boy, he walked in.

"I see you're taking advantage of the strangely unnatural bounty."

"Shame to let it go to waste", Michael said with a shrug. "Hey, Liir."

"How've you been? I'm sorry I haven't been by since I took my trip. I've been... handling things."

He sat down, taking a booth near the counter.

"Not so bad. How'd your trip go?"

He was wiping down the counter around the bowls, but his attention was on Liir.

"My uncle probably won't trouble me anymore. Or I've made matters worse. I couldn't tell you."

He pulled his bag up to rest on the table and he fiddled with the strap between his fingers.

"I got a look at Princess Nastoya. I met an old friend. And apparently, I saw my sister, though I didn't realize it at the time because I am most certainly an imbecile.

"What've you been up to?"

"Nothing as interesting as that. From the beginning... what'd you do to your uncle, can you help the princess, what old friend and... how did you not realize it?"

"I'd rather not discuss it, I have a lot more research before I can do much of anything other than make oranges and... such, a boy named Trism who I'd shared an alcove with during a storm, and she was dressed as a beggar and didn't identify herself to me. Plus I was honestly terrified I'd get in trouble and I ran off before I could see much of her face."

He breathed out in a long sigh.

Michael tilted his head, choosing to focus on the last matter.

"How'd you know it was her, then?"

"I came back the same way when I was a bit raw and I picked up on the memory on the street. I saw her face then, clearly. It all sort of came together then."

"As much as anything I do does," he murmured, not quite pleased.

"Anything of note happen that I wouldn't know of? I've ceased listening to the radio much anymore."

"Not really." He shrugged. "Same old Fandom weird. Were we in France when you left?"

"I couldn't tell you," he admitted with a shrug.

"I don't pay attention to where we are because I try not to leave the island. Your world is terrifying."

He nodded and reached out to grab for a piece of candy. He looked questioningly at Michael to ask if this was all right.

"Sure", Michael reassured him. "You're not going to eat it all."

He was quiet for a moment.

"Michael? Could I ask your advice on something?"

"I have to tell... someone" Ino "something that might make them upset. Not with me" with Andrew "with someone else. Any suggestions?"

Michael eyed him.

"Might help if I knew a few more details."

"I'd rather Ino not break Andrew's arm," he said in a deep sigh out, "but I can't exactly keep avoiding the fact that Andrew and I have... parted ways."

"Yeah, you're gonna have to tell her sooner or later", Michael agreed. "But you don't have to tell her the whole truth."

"I can't think of any part of the truth I could cut out that would prevent her from being angry with him," he said, spreading his hands.

"Ino knows me. She knows how I am."

"Make it sound like it was both of your idea?" he suggested.

He snorted.

"That would be an out in out lie. And when she asked why I wanted to end it, I seriously doubt that 'because he was treating me like I meant nothing to him' would go over well and it's the only honest answer."

"Sorry. I didn't mean to-- it's been a very frustrating month or so."
