Covent Garden Flowrs, Thursday 11/13

Should anyone venture into the flower shop today, they'd find a pile of innocent newspapers being fiendishly attacked by demented human with a pair of sewing shears. Or at least that's what the newspapers would tell you, if you asked them and happened to be able to speak Newspaper.

The human had a slightly different opinion, namely that she needed one copy for herself, and one to put up in the shop, one to send to Mrs. Higgins, one for her father, perhaps? And of course two for 27A Wimpole Street.

Both for Colonel Pickering, of course. Just in case he should lose one.

The sign over the door contained an E made of twisted-up newsprint today, so it shared the opinion of the paper, but the sign in the window thought the other one had just gone barmy from missing a letter for so long.

"Oh! You are in today!" Daisy remarked as she ducked into the shop a bit after doing a few good rounds about the island with the troops. "Hullo, Eliza! What's all this with the newspaper, then?"

"Daisy, hello!" Eliza looked up and beamed, scissors in hand. "There's a story about my shop in it!"

"Good news or bad news?" Daisy asked, since she could see it both ways, either that Eliza was trying to extricate all of them to display with pride, or collect all of them in hopes to destroy them, and thus the carnation reward.

"Oh, it's good." Eliza replied immediately, passing a copy of the page over. "A young girl from the school - very sharp, that one - asked if she could interview me for her business column."

Daisy smiled as she took the copy and looked it over; her expression became quite impressed. "Well, look at that. Can't beat that kind of advertising, can you?"

Ooooooh. Rikku was going to bounce into the store.

"I didn't bring one," she said, "but I could totally find one. I'm, like, the editor? Of the paper, I mean. Hiya!"

"I certainly hope not," Eliza answered fervently. Then she laughed. "Though I think we're the only flower shop on the island, so there's not likely to be anyone trying to beat us."

"Oh, hello!" Eliza answered. "You're Rye...er...Ree..." She paused, then said ruefully, "I'm just going to make it worse if I keep trying to pronounce it, aren't I."

"That's a good point there," Daisy agreed. "Anyway, I did come in for something today, Eliza, and I hate to say it, but it's for some daisies."

"Really?" Eliza grinned apologetically. "I'd have put it on the sign and everything, if I knew you were coming in!"

"Well, it'd be a little silly, I think, if we went through all that pomp and circumstance every time I came in to buy a daisy, especially since I plan to do it at least every once in a while. Flowers, they only keep for so long, after all."

"Not every time, no," Eliza agreed, laughing as she turned to the pots of daisies. "But once might be a lark."

"I'll be helpful and mention that I'm at least likely to come in on a Thursday like this," Daisy informed Eliza. "Might make the planning a bit easier."

"How very kind of you," Eliza replied, only a little bit dryly. She held up a bunch of daisies. "Wrapped in paper? In a vase? Anything else with them?"

"Wrapped in paper's just fine," Daisy nodded. "They're just to be used a signature when I pay my rent."

She thought it was too cute to pass it up, and a very desperate attempt to make a clear distinction between Daisy and Detective Constable Day to her landlord.

"A...signature?" Eliza repeated as she picked out a particularly pretty sheet of silver floral paper.

"Oh, you know, just a nice little touch for when I pass it off to Loki. Sure, the name's on the check, but including a little daisy from Daisy's just so much more interesting!"

"That's a lovely idea," Eliza said approvingly. "I hope your landlady appreciates it."

"Rikku," she supplied brightly. "It's okay, it's an Al Bhed name, so I get that a lot. Al Bhed is kinda hard for people to get the hang of. Man, you should have seen me learning to pronounce this language. At least Al Bhed sticks to its own rules."

Seriously. Y didn't magically sound like U some days.

"So, are you Eliza Doolittle? The one that was Turtle's column?"

"Landlord, actually," Daisy corrected with a little bit of a chuckle. "Thanks for the lovely image you've just given me of Loki in a pretty flowered print, though."

Eliza beamed. "Yes, that's right!" Then she added carefully, "Rikku. You write a column about learning your language, as well, don't you?"

"Oh, my. I hadn't supposed that was a man's name. I always guess wrong, round here!"

"I do!" she bounced. "Learn to Speak Al Bhed. I didn't think anybody read it. I only run it when we have a light week, 'cause there are lots of cool articles and I don't want to crowd it up with my stuff, you know?"

"Not exactly one you hear much anymore, I'll agree to that."

"I hadn't seen the paper before this week," Eliza explained, "But once I'd read it, I had to look back at the older ones to find out more about this place!"

"They're totally helpful that way," Rikku nodded. "Plus they're fun to just read, I mean, seeing everyone's take on Fandom and the weird ideas they have. Like Peter's pony rewards system. Oh. And if you went back too far, then I really am sorry about the whole breaking a wall in reality thing, and I totally promise I'm not gonna do that again."

Total accident. Mostly. Honest.

"You broke a wall?" Eliza repeated curiously. "I don't think I read that far back. You don't look big enough to break a wall!"

"I'm tougher than I look," Rikku said, posing dramatically. "Seriously. And it was a weird kinda wall. Loooooong story. Totally an accident, not gonna do it again, honest."

She glanced around at the flowers. "Okay, so, uh ... do you guys have those button -- bootin -- oooooh, crap. Told you I wasn't good at pronouncing this stuff. You know, those flowers guys wear, on their lapels?"

"Buttonholes, is what I've always called them," Eliza said. Much easier to pronounce than that French claptrap. "We've all sorts; what colours were you thinking of?"

"That's way easier," Rikku grinned. "Okay. Um. He usually goes for really bold stuff, like, bright red, black suit? Or you could make it orange so he knows it's from me. Uh. I don't really know what I'm going, but he's kinda into the whole flower deal, you know? So even if I screw it up, he'll get a kick out of it. I hope."

"Perhaps something like this?" Eliza suggested, pulling an orange and red carnation from the oh so clever refrigerated case, and placing it on the counter.

Rikku couldn't help applauding. Or bouncing on her toes.

"That's perfect," she said. "It's all festive and he can pin it to his lapel and look nifty. Right? That's so cool. The ones he sent me were all fancy, too. Ooooh, was that you that found them? Because they were wonderful."

"I'm glad you like it," Eliza said, tapping the buttonhole. "Ino picked out the flowers for that bouquet, though. She's got quite the touch with them."

"She does," Rikku bounced. "I should thank her. Or is that weird? I'm not really up on the etiquette, here."

"Then we're two of a kind," Eliza answered wryly. "As I'm not really ...up... on the etiquette now. But I can't see as... that... it ever hurts to thanks somebody."

"Probably doesn't," Rikku said. "And if you say thanks and you weren't supposed to, then you just seem nice. Other way around, you might seem snooty."

"I hadn't thought of it that way, but you're quite right." Eliza nodded decisively. "Would you like to take the buttonhole with you, or were you wanting it delivered?"

"Could I have it delivered?" she asked. "If I take it with me, I'll smush it. I know how I am with these things. I smush stuff even when I'm trying really hard not to."

Eliza laughed. "Well, we can't have that. When would you like it delivered?"

Rikku had to bounce on her toes while she considered that one.

"Monday?" she said. "Bright and early to start his week? Just a little surprise from me, when he's not expecting it?"

"Monday it is!" Eliza said, sliding a card across the counter for Rikku to fill out.

"Thank you!" Rikku bounced, scribbling a quick, cheery note on the card. "So how much do I owe you? This has to be neat, working here with all these flowers."

It was probably much like what she felt, working at Wellspring, surrounded by all of the gun. Although she was tactful enough not to mention that bit, because that would probably sound somewhat violent and unhinged and other bad things.

"Well, I do try to keep it neat, but sometimes they turn into a jungle," Eliza replied, then named a price that still seemed ridiculously high to her, but which she gathered was on the low end of reasonable, here.
