Ben settled in after restocking with some new merchandise. Well, used merchandise that just arrived. Whatever. Had had taken the time to set up a new display with a sign:

50% off hats and things with buckles on them

If he owned a food store, he'd have a special on turkeys. Since he owned a random used odds and ends store, he was going with old hats. Ben himself was wearing a pilgrim hat. It was partially to help explain the sale in case anyone was unsure about it and partially because he thought he was working it. You know, as much as anyone can work a pilgrim hat.

[OOC: Still hiring. And wtf, LJ? It took away all the text the first time I tried to post this.

Seriously, wtf, LJ?

Whoa! A hat sale. Murdock definitely had to check that out.

He wandered in, glancing around the shop.

It was full of ... stuff. Cool stuff!

"Can I help you with anything?" Ben asked.

After his shift ended over at Wellspring Arms, Biff walked in wearing his ~~totally stupid~~ incredibly awesome Indian headdress.

"Well, this is awkward."

"Not if we only focus on Thanksgiving itself and save the aftermath for Friday," Ben said.

"Should I go out and bring in a turkey or something?" Biff asked.

"Wouldn't it be more appropriate for you to bring corn?" Ben asked.

"Oh, I'm just lookin'," he grinned. "You got a lot of nice things here."

"Here, dumb white man," Biff deadpanned. "Welcome to the New World. This here is called 'food.' You should've thought of that before you came here."

"Thanks, Ben said. "My suppliers send me pretty good used stuff."

"Thanks. In honor of your help, I promise not to horribly betray you for a few years," Ben said.

"Awesome. I like blankets, buttons and things that are shiny."

"I see," he grinned. "I can tell I'll have to come by here more often."

No idea with what he'd do with any of what he bought...

"So what kinda hats you got? I like all kinds. Sorta got a collection goin'."

"I actually have all of that in this store, so you're in luck," Ben said. "As a bonus, some of the buttons are really shiny, too."

"Well, most of them are over on the display," Ben said. "A cowboy hat, some baseball caps for what I think are minor league teams." Ben stopped as he looked at one cap. "Or tractor dealerships. And a bowler hat, for some reason."

"A bowler hat? Ain't got one of them."

He wandered over to take a closer look at it.

"Hrm, might be interested in that one."

Only Murdock probably would.

"Do you have a blanket covered in shiny buttons?" Biff asked. "Because I'll totally put that on my Thanksgiving table."

"It's practically a steal at that price," Ben said.

"We can put some shiny buttons on a blanket," Ben offered.

"Oh, I'll bet. What the heck," he turned and grinned at Ben. "I'll take it."

"Great," Ben said, heading back to the counter. "So you have a hat collection? What started you on that?"

He points at the ballcap currently sitting on his head. "Somethin' like this. And I got used to wearin' 'em in the Army."

And the hair. The very thinning hair.

"That makes sense. Some people just randomly like hats," Ben said. He read Murdock the total for the hat.

"Yup, I'm about as random as they come."

He scooped the hat off the rack and wandered toward the counter.

"So you new 'round here, right? Don't think I've seen this place before."

"I just showed up a few weeks ago," Ben said. "And we've been open since then. I'm Ben."

He stuck a hand out. "Murdock. Nice to meet ya."

Ben shook his hand. "Same here. What do you do here?"

"I teach. Right now we're covering aviation, mostly the history of it. But I also did a flight workshop during the summer."

"I'd probably go with the history class. I've never been a big flier, myself," Ben said. "How is it teaching there? Are the kids good?"

"Yah, they're good," he grinned. "I got a pretty small class, but they're all good. And teachin' is great. It's kinda cool to pass on things you know about. I'm a pilot, so I figured I could teach stuff about that, you see."

"Do you not just fly in general or do you mean like actually piloting a craft?"

"The piloting part," Ben said. "I never even learned how to drive a car. I'm not sure I'd want to try something that could crash to the ground in a fiery wreck."

"Actually," he leaned against the counter. "It's been proven that air travel is safer than any other form. Sure, accidents can happen, but overall they're less frequent. There's like, what... how many car accidents per second? And odds are, if something does happen, it won't be a fiery wreck. Tons of stories out there of people walkin' away without a scratch."

"Heck," he shrugged just a tad, "I've crashed a couple of times myself."

"I've never crashed a car or a plane, so I think I'm doing pretty well for myself."

He chuckled. "I reckon so then. I don't think I've crashed a car. I actually fly more than I drive. 'Course, that might be because I don't even own a car."

"And if you did, you might start trying to hit ramps to get airborne with them, wouldn't you?" Ben asked.

"I might," he smirked. "There is some appeal in that."

And just because the van had been airborne a few times...

"Just remember, if you do that, make sure your hat is on tightly or you might lose it," Ben said.

"I sure will," he laughed. "And I usually do. Ain't lost it yet."

"I like you, man. You're funny."

"I'm glad to hear that. People usually keep going and say 'looking' or 'smelling' after that, and that hurts after the first couple dozen times," Ben joked.

Snicker.

"You should do comedy. Like a stand-up act or somethin'. Probably make a ton of money."

"If I were out for money, I wouldn't be running a second hand store, would I?" Ben asked.

"Good point. So why are ya runnin' a second hand shop? If I can ask, that is?"

He's not nosy, just mildly curious.

"I've had a very strange life. Let's leave it at that," Ben said in a friendly tone.

"I think that sums up most of the people around here," he replied.

"Well, I guess I better head out. How much do I owe ya?"

"How much will that run me?" Biff asked.
