There was one advantage to the relatively early time Cable had to start work: it was always easier to get a good cup of coffee. With one in hand, he strode into his office, and took a perch. Considering radio on Saturday, he was hoping he'd catch sight of his (hopefully not former?) deputy during the day.

Mostly because no matter how hard he tried, the paperwork seemed to have started piling up on his desk. Sigh.

He hoped whoever sold the paper made a good profit on shipping this much to the island.

To be honest, Robin wasn't sure she had a job still. But, she came slinking in on Monday morning, looking a little wary and just a touch hopeful.

Cable slipped out of his office after he'd heard the tell-tale footsteps. "You're going to have to teach me that trick with the colored Post-Its..." he said, when he caught sight of Robin.

"It's easy," she assured him. "So, um. Japan didn't work out."

"I noticed," he said, wryly. "Trouble at the office?"

"Something like that," she admitted. "Mostly it just wasn't worth it."

"I'm going to take from that that it wasn't what you expected," Cable said, tilting his head at her.

He was considering taking a seat for this one.

"They had me reporting with a chimp," she said, because that summed it up nicely.

He did have to blink. Once or twice.

"Not exactly CNN," because that summed things up as far as he was concerned. He took that seat.

"And I had to come back to the States for a friend's wedding anyway," she sighed, shrugging. "So I just quit. It wasn't right for me at all, and it was even more humiliating than the news I used to have to cover back in New York."

Nathan nodded along with her story, then leaned back in his chair. "Well," he said, "That makes it a good thing you still had a job waiting for you here." That was as much an offer as anything.

She smiled, because that was as much of an admittance that she'd been worried that she was going to give. "I told Benton I'd have to come and check on your filing system, at least."

"It has been getting a little out of hand..." That was about as close to admitting he'd been worried that he was about to get. "If you're willing to share an office with the chimpanzee."

Personally, Nathan felt his jokes were getting better.

"Hilarious," Robin said dryly, but she was just kind of glad to be back.

"So what are your plans for the forseeable future?" Nathan considered her. "We've got a new sheriff in town," he added. Those two bits of conversation might have been connected in his mind.

She raised a brow. "We do? I was only gone a week, right?"

"Roy Mustang left in a hurry," he said, mildly, "He had the rebuilding of his country to tend to."

"Well, if there's a good reason to skip out...." Robin agreed.

"It takes a great deal of effort, manpower, and oversight to get the infrastructure of a country back up and working," Nathan said, with the voice of experience. "I'm hoping he doesn't fall into any of the usual pits."

"I've never done it, personally," Robin said casually. Because that somehow wasn't part of her resumé.

"It's not exactly a one-man job," he replied, with a touch of amusement. "But an admirable one, as long as it's done with the restoration of democracy in mind."
