The Boards - Thursday, 6/2 - REHEARSAL!

Today, the chairs were set up for everyone, all in a circle around a couple of tables pushed together. Geoffrey was looking pleased, if a little manic, and clutched his coffee with the kind of fervor usually reserved for knights heading into battle.

"Today, we start rehearsals, of course. Some of you have been here before, and some of you haven't. Some of you know what you're in for, but most of you don't. So let me lay it on the line right now:

"Point 1: while I might have quite a lot of experience with madness, I am mentally equipped to handle being the director. Point 2: I am the director, this is my theatre, and if I say 'go get a muffin', go get a muffin."

Which could mean any number of things, of course, from 'good! go reward yourself' to 'get the hell out of my sight, you philistine, before I start strangling you in lieu of water fowl'.

"We're doing The Scottish Play," and he glanced around to see if there were any reactions, "which, while very difficult to stage effectively, is still a worthwhile and stirring piece of art. Treat it like anything else and I will personally eject you from the theatre. With my boot.

"You might have heard some things about this play. I'm going to tell you they're ridiculous. It's a play. The power it holds has nothing to do with 'curses' or bad luck and everything to do with the lesson it has to teach us and the things which we, as actors, will help the audience see on this stage and in themselves."

He looked around one more time.

"All right, sit. We're doing readthrough today."

[ocd up!]

Joan nibbled on a muffin and hoped it didn't contain aphrodisiacs.

"You're my brother, aren't you?" Jack asked. He'd seen Edward at the performance in the park, but never spoken to him. "For the play, I mean."

Jack selected a good handful of cookies and a bit of fruit, then stood back to watch the group gather.

Jack had read the play a few years before -- just long enough that he needed to page through it carefully to find Marshall's scenes. He skimmed the play as he waited for the readthrough to begin.

"Ah, but I am not certain, my friend," he replied, cheerfully. "I play the part of Dougan." No, Edward has not yet read the play.

Karla had finished reading the play just last week, so she was pretty set to play lady MacFinlay. Still, it was good to page through it again and really focus on her part. Also, she needed to polish her rant on Lord Shakespeare's misapprehensions about witches.

"Brother to Marshall," Jack confirmed. "Which is the part I play. I'm called Jack."

One of about 500, it seemed, so he quickly added, "... Priest is my surname. I saw you singing with the blonde girl in the park last week."

Excellent! Food she didn't have to cook herself. Karla kind of loved that about the island--there were so many people willing to feed her. And take out? Best. Invention. Ever.

"Excellent! I shall enjoy this play with you, Jack. Perhaps I shall just call you Jack since I know no other. But I do know a Priest. A kilted one at that."

Edward beamed. "Ah, the lovely lady Ino. Did you enjoy the performance?"
