Dite's Decadent Delights, Monday afternoon

It had finally happened.

After weeks of products being knocked off the shelves, scratch marks on the products and furniture, the loss of one big purple 'appendage' to a set of tiny kitten teeth and claws, and half a newly arrived box of lube, the culprit had finally been imprisoned in the back supply closet, which had been kitten proofed as best Aphrodite could make it.

He wasn't happy.

"Mreow."

"No." Pause.

"Mreow."

"Nooo." Pause.

"Mreooooooooow."

Aphrodite threw up her hands. "Fine! But you chew up one more tube of lube and you're never comin' out. Got it?"

She opened the door to the room, and Hercules sauntered out to sit and lick his paws.

'Dite sighed. "Am I really this much of a sucker or are you just too cute?"

With a glare she went back to her catalogs. "I think Valentine might find these interesting. If the cat doesn't chew them up first."

She ordered several, just for the heck of it.

Mina Murray had not been pleased the first time she entered the shop.

This time, however, she had... personal reasons to enter.

She attempted to keep a low profile as she browsed.

Eventually, Aphrodite caught sight of the visitor. At first she put a smile on her face to approach, but then realized who it was. The shorter hair had thrown her.

Frowning, with one eyebrow raised, Aphrodite stayed behind the counter, glowering.

Hercules, the traitor, approached the woman. 'Dite hoped he would bite her ankles.

Mina bent down to scritch Hercules about the ears.

"An odd home for you," she said.

It had been far too long since Max had visited. And while the shop itself was an intriguing and interesting place, he was mostly interested in the proprietess.

"Hello," he called as he strode in with a grin.

Aphrodite looked up at the sound of his voice and smiled.

"Max!" It really had been too long, as far as she was concerned.

But she kept her cool, approaching slowly, her arms folded, a speculative look in her eye. "You know, it's a good thing you stopped in. I was beginning to feel ignored."

"And an even odder place for you to visit." Aphrodite's hands were on her hips, the glower still on her face. "Something I can help you with, Mzzzzz. Harker?"

"The fault is entirely mine, my lady," Max declared gallantly, sweeping into a ridiculously theatrical bow. "I was not sure I could survive another encounter with one so lovely, but apparently even my self-preservation can not keep me away."

Max was good at laying it on thick.

"Murray," Mina said, sighing a little. "It's Miss Murray, if you please."

Yes, he most certainly was. It wasn't like Aphrodite couldn't see through his act. She just didn't care.

"Well, it looks like you survived the last one pretty well. But I wonder." Taking a step closer, she tilted her head. "Does that mean I should send you away? For your own . . . self preservation?" Another step. "I mean, I really wouldn't want to be selfish here."

A change of name, a change of hair. Aphrodite wondered if anything else had changed. "Murray, then. What can I do for you?"

Who said the goddess of love couldn't be gracious? Even if she was picturing some very evil things right now.

Sometimes being obviously over the top was part of the fun.

Max lifted a hand theatrically to his heart. "The answer would be yes, but now that I am in your presence again I fear that if you were to send me away I would die on the spot!"

"The internet has exposed me to the concept that there has been some advance in... private personal technology," Mina said.

Fun! Oh, yes . . . this was fun.

"Well, then," Aphrodite stepped closer, moving into Max's personal space. "Tell me what will cure you of this . . . malady." One finger reached up near his collar bone, dragging downward slowly. "I'll do whatever I can to help."

For humanitarian reasons. It was what the goddess of love did . . . kind of.

Max's breathing sped up slightly and he grinned. "It seems that being close to you gives me new energy. Perhaps if you let me be..." he paused significantly and shot her an amused grin, "closer to you."

"And you decided to lower yourself and come to my shop? How awful for you." Gracious, yes. Letting bygones be bygones?

Mina glowered. "If you wish, I could leave this place and give my business to one of many online markets."

"Closer . . ." A final step and she was up against him, her eyes peeking at his from under her lashes. "Is this enough? Or do you need to rest? Perhaps you should . . ." her smile turned wicked, "lie down for a while."

"My knees are growing weak," Max lied, stepping a half-step closer despite the fact that there wasn't actually any space to do so. "But only if doing so won't lose me the... pleasure of your company."

A hand to her chest, Aphrodite faked a shocked look. "You? You know about the naughty sites on the internet? Such a fine, upstanding woman as yourself?"

But curiosity was poking at her. "Just what are you looking for, anyway?"

Mina's expression did not change. "If you recall, my objection was based on the public nature of the store. The privacy of my home is a much different matter."

"Oh, nooooooo. I think it would be best if I stayed with you for a little while." She began to back away, running and hand down his arm to take his hand. "To . . . make sure you . . . can still get up . . ." Aphrodite winked, then waved one hand at the door, locking it and turning the sign around.

Suddenly she remembered that the last time Max was in, she was still going by Jackie Blue. Biting her lip, she looked up at him. "Um . . . Max . . . do you listen to the radio?"

"Not if I can avoid it," Max laughed, letting her lead him on and letting his thumb run lightly across the back of her hand where she held his.

Which didn't mean he wasn't aware of things. He did have those private sessions with Raven, after all, and she'd mentioned some things that suggested... well... that all was not as it appeared.

Not that Max considered that to be any big deal. She could call herself what she wanted.

"The store hasn't changed; it's still open to the public. You're looking for a private item in a public place." She tilted her head. "Now, do you want to tell me what you're looking for, or is this too public for you?"

"Well, then . . . I think you should know. . ." She took another step towards the back, still facing him, "that my name is not Jackie, but Aphrodite, and I'm the goddess of love."

'Dite shrugged at him. "Does that bother you?"

Max cocked his head and smiled a genuine smile. No acting this time. "Should it?" he asked. "You're still you. Beautiful, imaginative, energetic..."

He leaned forward to press a quick kiss to her forehead to punctuate his point.
