The Gig, Friday

Dani rushed through her chores today so she could change her clothes before heading to the park. It would be nice to see her dad again, but she suspected that Ken had some sort of agenda in coming to see her. But once she had the horses set up in the paddock, she was going to meet with her father and find out what was going on.

The Gig was open!

Vince walked in, Howard probably following close behind.

"Dani!" he exclaimed. "Come meet my best mate. He's only partially scary, but he's harmless."

Howard did follow close behind. And he frowned at Vince's introduction.

"How could any friend of yours be partially scary?" asked Dani, giving Howard a friendly smile. See, she could be very charming when she didn't have an agenda.

"Well, he does have creepy tiny eyes," Vince said. "Howard, this is Dani. Isn't she beautiful?"

Howard nodded, hating when Vince put him on the spot in front of women. "Nice to meet you, Dani."

"It's good to meet you too, Howard. Are you interested in music, like Vince?" asked Dani. "He's been working hard to keep the horses entertained."

"He's not really into music," Vince said. "He's more, well... I'll let him explain."

Vince didn't think Jazz counted as music.

"I'm a musical genius," Howard corrected. "I can play any instrument I pick up."

"Oooh. Will I get to hear you play something while you're in town?" asked Dani.

"...Oh dear, here we go," Vince said.

"Oh, hush," Howard said. "I don't play often. When I do, I tend to get possessed by the spirit of Jazz."

"Well, maybe I can persuade you to play something for me?" asked Dani. She was assuming that "possessed by the spirit of Jazz" was a metaphorical thing.

"...no, he does mean that possession like a real thing," Vince said. "He gets all scary and his clothes tear off. It's hideous."

"It's rather embarrassing," Howard said.

"Ohhh," said Dani. "Well, maybe we should skip that part. But you're staying for the whole weekend, right? Maybe we should all get together sometime and get to know each other better."

"...Right, that sounds lovely," Vince said. "And that's literally, not metaphorically, right?"

"How do you metaphorically get to know someone better?" Howard asked.

"No, Vince, I am being literal this time," said Dani. "And Howard, you really don't want to know about my metaphorical relationship with Vince."

She wouldn't have been surprised, though, if Vince had already told Howard all about it. Boys did like to brag about their conquests.

"Though it is pretty spectacular," Vince said, grinning.

No one had to decode that subtext for Howard. He ignored it though. "I would enjoy getting to know you better."

There had definitely been some bragging, Dani decided.

"Vince, you and Howard should join my dad and I for dinner at my house," said Dani. "Is tomorrow night good for you guys?"

"Tomorrow night," Vince said. "Brilliant. I'll make sure to dress up my best and... we'll do what we can about Howard."

"I'm sure it will be something special," said Dani.

It would be something to remember. That much was certain.
