Luke's Diner, Thursday

Priestly wasn't in an elf costume. He was wearing a t-shirt that said "this is my elf costume", which wasn't what it had said when he'd put it on that morning, but, hey. Not an actual elf costume.

The kitchen staff, though, they were all in elf costumes.

And they were damn bitter about it.

Thus was Priestly trying to keep one eye over his shoulder as he worked. The expressions on the kitchen staff's faces were the sorts that promised retribution.

Turkey sandwiches with cranberry
Sweet potato fries
Rhubarb pie

Luke's was open.

Priestly might be busy ~~hiding~~ checking to make sure everything was okay in the broom closet.

He swears this is not his fault. The island is out to get him.

No, seriously. It's clearly doing all this with malicious intent!

I want a t-shirt that says "this is my elf costume".

It would mean I could put off doing laundry for an extra day.

Karla made a detour through town on her way back to the dorms. "Kiss kiss," she said, catching sight of Priestly. "At the risk of it almost becoming a joke, I was hoping I could get some sanwiches? Ummm...a lot of sandwiches?"

"I can do sandwiches," Priestly said. The cook muttered something about sandwiches being all Priestly was good for, leading Priestly to look over his shoulder and shout "SOUS-CHEF!" before turning back to Karla. "How many is a lot?"

"Uh...ten, maybe?" she said, trying to think. Bobby was a growing male, which meant he probably ate almost as much as she did, and she wasn't sure how long he planned to stay locked away. "With, umm, the same number of fries?"

Karla generally prepared for a year-long famine when she was in charge of getting food.

"I can probably do ten." He made more than that for his various platters, after all. "You planning a party or something?"

"Bringing lunch to a friend," Karla said cheerfully, relieved that Priestly wasn't upset at having to make ten sandwiches. "I want to make sure there are enough."

Yes, she meant a friend. Had she known George and Kyle were going to be there, she would have asked for more.

". . . Is your friend ten feet tall with the metabolism of a humming bird?"

"...No?"

To be fair, Karla wasn't ten feet tall, either.

"He might want to save some for later."

Priestly was a teenage boy, so he did have SOME idea of how much one could eat. Saving some for later made a lot of sense. He nodded. "Gotcha. You the special for all of 'em, or a little bit of variety?"

"A little variety if that's okay," Karla decided. "Your sandwiches are too good to get bored with, but why take the risk?"

It wasn't flattery. Priestly's sandwiches were really good.

Priestly looked down and blushed slightly either way. What? He loved it when people loved his food. "No problem. Anything to drink with that?"

"No, thanks. I'm going to get some warm cider from J,GoB," Karla said. "It's my favorite autumnal drink."

And wasn't eggnog.

"But maybe some slices of pie?"

"I dig mulled wine, myself." He'd actually never had mulled wine. But it sounded good. "Coming right up."

If he could manage to brave the elf-filled kitchen.

Of course he liked mulled wine. Who didn't?

"It's a really good way to get rid of really lousy wine," Karla agreed with a smile. "Though not as refreshing as cider, you know?"

"I never really thought of warm drinks as refreshing," said the California boy.

"Warm apple cider doesn't lose all of the original crispness, even after it's mulled," Karla explained.

Glacia frequently got snowed in for weeks at a time in the winter. Karla knew a lot about various warm drinks.

"Yeah, but it's all, like . . . warm." Priestly boxed up several slices of pie while he waited for the cook to let him at the meat slicer. "It just makes you feel kinda . . . mushy and sleepy."

"Not true!" Karla protested with a laugh. "After a few hours outside in the freezing cold, the warm cider just fills you up with enough heat and energy to invigorate you and send you back outside. And baked potatoes in your pockets keep your hands warm. Plus, by the time you're hungry, they're cool enough to eat!"

Priestly might be kind of gaping, now. Why the hell would anyone want to spend a few hours out in the cold? Or eat potatoes from their pockets? If man were meant to deal with cold, he'd have fur!

"Or you could stay inside and be warm anyway."

Wrinkling her nose, Karla shook her head. "You wouldn't say that if you'd been snowbound for the last three weeks. Sometimes you just need to get out of the house and away from all the people."

Oh lord, what a horrifying thought.

". . . I am so moving back to California when I graduate."

"You don't get snowed in very often there?"

"We don't get snow there very often. My old boss likes to go surfing for Christmas."

"Surfing?"

Priestly was talking to the girl who'd never seen the ocean before coming to Fandom. It was like they came from completely different worlds.

~~Oh right. They did.~~

"You know, riding waves on a long board? I mean, it's not my thing, and the water's totally actually way too cold for that to be anywhere near comfortable, but he's not actually freezing his balls off or anything."

Priestly had pushed the conversation from confusing into boggling. "Riding waves on a long board?" she repeated, picturing someone paddling into the ocean on a two-by-four. "And this is fun?"

"Apparently? I think it's an adrenaline junky thing. Like jumping off the roof."

"I'm not seeing where they're at all the same," Karla said. "I mean, sitting on that board can't be comfortable. Couldn't they sit on the floaty things like they have in the pool?"

"They don't sit on it. They stand on it. That way they can control which way it goes by shifting their weight around."

"How do they not fall in?" Karla asked, unable to comprehend what Priestly was talking about. "Why don't the boards just sink?"

Sure, wood floated, but only up to a point.

"I think it has to do with how wide it is? Some surface area physics thing. And, well, sometimes they do fall in. That's part of the adrenaline thing. Trying to balance against the forces of nature."

"How wide are they?" Karla asked, finally admitting, "I thought they just rode boards. You know...like board-boards. Regular boards."

That was enlightening Karla.

"I dunno, like, two, three feet? They're surf boards, not, like, house boards. They're all shaped and waxed."

"Oh." Yep, still pretty lost. This was one of those discussions that needed illustrations and diagrams for Karla to follow. Possibly a Powerpoint presentation.

"And this is a Christmas tradition?"

Priestly shook his head. "Uh. Not for anyone but Trucker? He surfs pretty much every day of every year."

Karla shook her head, still marvelling over the what she thought surfing was. "Well, as long as it's fun, I guess," she said, a little awkwardly.

"Hey, I never said I did it. Or that I understood why Trucker loves it. Just, you know, you don't do that when it's freezing out."

At that, Karla had to smile. "I think it sounds like a most interesting activity, even if I don't understand it. I like most things that have to do with the ocean. Though you're right to be worried for your friend. If it's cold out, you don't have to be in the water long before hypothermia sets in."

"Yeeeah, it doesn't get that cold around Santa Cruz. And you wear a wet suit."
