Fourth Dimension Fine Arts and Antiques, Monday, 5/3

Sophie was still restlessly considering a trip somewhere; maybe a job. All of the students graduating, and Geoffrey's return, had her considering her options. Scanning the internet for ideas. In the meantime, Fourth Dimension's current exhibit satisfied her need for something unique: gemstone statues by Vasily Konovalenko, Helen Serras-Herman, and George Dapsevicius.

Perfect.

There was lemonade and tea on the sideboard, as well as coffee.

"Kiss, kiss," Karla said, ducking her head inside the gallery. "Sophie, are you around?" ~~Moping~~ thinking all day at work had given Karla a spectacular idea. Now all she needed to do was implement it.

Sophie came out of the second room and smiled when she saw the girl. "Karla! Hello. Come to consider outrageous purchases again?"

"Outrageous yes," Karla said immediately. "Purchases...not exactly." Then her attention was snagged by a brilliant blue sculpture. "Maybe," she amended, drawing closer to examine it.

"I had a...kind of crazy idea," she continued. "I was hoping I could ask you for a favor."

"If it's not actually dangerous...?" Sophie wasn't one much for being a role-model, but there were limits. "Of course I'd like to help you."

"No danger!" Karla said immediately. "Not to you or the pieces!"

That was reassuring, right? Right?

Sophie folded her arms, amused. "What, precisely, do you have in mind?"

"I would like to burgle your gallery," Karla explained brightly.

Irony. Sophie's smile involuntarily widened at that pronouncement, although she tried to look severe. "Oh really. And how are you planning on doing this? And why should I allow this to occur?" ...not very successful with the severe, there, Sophie.

"It's for a very good cause!" Karla said, nodding earnestly. "Dinah and our friend Momoko are training to be detectives and superheroes and things." Whatever 'things' might entail; Karla wasn't entirely sure. "Well, Dinah and I have been joking around calling me an evil villain because of this, umm, outfit I have--" and let's just quickly move past that and ignore Karla's faintly red cheeks, okay Sophie? "--and I thought that it might be a good idea for them to tackle someone with powers. They both come from worlds where there are people with special abilities and I think it'll be good for them to get some practice with powers before Dinah leaves the island to go to college! And, umm, how's Wednesday?"

Sophie bit her lip very hard not to laugh, and managed to look almost prim because of it. "There's nothing going on for me on Wednesday... If I consent to this, what would you be doing to my gallery?" She held up one cautioning finger. "I shouldn't like to have to repair any damage to the shop. And would you want me to turn off the alarm system? The timing would have to be rather precise if I did."

Notice, she's not saying 'no.'

"Oh, no, there wouldn't be any damage at all," Karla assured her. "I'd be very careful. And they wouldn't be confronting me in the gallery. That might be good practice, but too risky for my liking."

As for the question of alarms...Karla thought for a minute and then shook her head, grinning a little bit. "No, I don't think you'll have to," she said. "I'll be using Craft. That should be more than a match for your alarms."

Over-confident much? Oh, yes.

"You're quite certain," Sophie said, watching her intently. "This wouldn't be the first time I've allowed this... I won't say who else has 'practiced' here. But they found it quite difficult."

Hmmm. Interesting to find out if her security was vulnerable to Karla's magic. And if it wasn't....

"I'm certain," Karla said, her grin blooming even more. "I can walk through walls, go invisible, walk on air..." She tried to think of other kinds of alarms she'd seen on the teevee. "I'd love to see what I'm capable of, Sophie, really. I'm very sneaky, too!"

Which is why she asked permission first, of course.

"Then if you're sure you're up to it-- Very well." If she couldn't do it, better she learn those limitations now. Sophie's smile widened an increment. "If you get away with it, I'll let you keep one piece. That was the deal I had with the previous 'security consultant.' Is that acceptable?"

Karla looked both surprised and pleased. "I will? You sure? That's awesome!"

She'd been willing to do it just for the fun of it. Actually getting to keep a piece was just icing on the Francine-baked-cake.

"Ooh, which one do I want...This is an amazing display, Sophie."

"Thank you," Sophie said with great satisfaction. "I had a wonderful time putting this together over a few months. I'm rather pleased with the overall effect." Meaning: shiiiiiny. The kinds of things she would have stolen before; now she had enough of her own to be able to resist the allure. "And I'm quite sure. It's only fair. Although I reserve the right to have you walk me through how you accomplished it, if it works. I'll want to repair the hole in my security at that point."

Karla nodded, "Of course!" she agreed. "I'd love to be helpful, if I can. I don't know how useful I'll be, but anything I can do is yours for the asking."

"Splendid. Than Wednesday night, I'll find somewhere else to be, and give you my cell-phone number. You can call me when the heist is accomplished and you're through being 'arrested'," Sophie said, smiling. "And we'll discuss the particulars over cookies at the Perk, if you like."

"I'll put everything back, too," Karla said. Mmmm...cookies. And a free piece. This was shaping up to be an entirely brilliant plan. "I wouldn't want you to open on Thursday with the shop in disarray."
