Magic Box, Thursday, 6/03

Tara got bored at the shop pretty early today, and decided to dip her toe back into doing magic and test her telekinesis control by reshelving some of the books from a few aisles away.

She was doing okay with the paperbacks, but she kept dropping the hardbacks. From how loud the thuds were, she suspected she'd have to pay for some of them.

The Magic Box was open. Beware a bored witch.

"Hey, what's--" Kennedy would make her entrance right about midway through one of those telekinetic exercises, but at least she was quick enough on the uptake to promptly shut up and watch from the doorway for a minute, the bag of cupcakes that made up this week's customary treats dangling from her hand.

It saved her from the impulse to applaud, at least. That would be seriously lame.

Tara glanced over to Kennedy and managed to guide the book she'd been working with to a shelf with only a slight jerk and thump.

"Practice," she explained, a smile passing across her face. "I'm trying to start small, so.... books. How are you?"

"Mostly? Glad to see you're back at it," Kennedy answered. "'course, you would've gotten cupcakes either way. So how long d'you think it'd take to work your way up from moving books to, like, giving me a boost?"

She was about half joking. She'd actually wondered about that a few times.

"I dunno," Tara said speculatively, making grabby fingers at the cupcake bag. "Like, I can usually move things I can lift? And, uh, I'm not sure I could pick you up." She winced. "That came out wrong. I'm not calling you fat!"

...oh, and now Kennedy was eyeing her own wrists speculatively, but playfully, as she handed over the cupcakes. "I can always just take it as a sign my workouts are paying off," she teased. "Or, you know, you could try... not with the magic, I mean. Just try and pick me up."

Kennedy, the odds she can tell when you're making an unsubtle come-on are not in your favor here.

Yeah, Tara was pretty much oblivious to the double meaning there. She set down the cupcake and came around the counter, an uncertain look on her face. "I can try if you really want me to...."

And you know, that never got less cute somehow. "Do you see me running away?" Kennedy asked innocently.

Innocent. Ha.

"Not yet," Tara said, then put her hands gingerly on Kennedy's waist and hoisted inelegantly. "Bet you would if I dropped you."

"You're gonna need to get a better grip than that, for starters," Kennedy said with an indulgent smile, because she was not exactly going anywhere in the upward direction. "And come on. Me running away from you? So not happening."

"Yeah, sorry, I don't throw people around all that often," Tara said, tone lightly snarky. She couldn't resist leaning in for a kiss as she adjusted her grip, since Kennedy's lips were right there anyhow. "On three?"

She counted, then prepared to try to lift again. After the kissing. That was more important.

"On three," she agreed, and was there something wrong with Kennedy that she thought it was kind of hot when Tara got a little sarcastic?

The question must not have been that important, since the kiss distracted her from it easily enough.

"C'mon, babe, show me what you can do."

"What do you think I can do?" Tara teased, and put all of her strength into lifting again. The whole exercise was more than faintly goofy, so she couldn't help laughing as she tried.

"I think you can surprise me," Kennedy decided, right about the time she felt her feet leave the floor. "Or maybe I just wanted to get up close and personal."

Reaching out to put her arms around Tara's neck was probably not conducive to this goofy exercise, was it?

The arm around her neck made Tara giggle and lose her grip -- not much, but enough that Kennedy would probably land back on her feet. "You're a lot more distracting than the books were."

"I hope that's not a bad thing." Kennedy landed easily enough-- it wasn't like she'd been hoisted overhead or anything-- but didn't let go. She liked this kind of proximity, okay? "Unless, I don't know, there's some really cute old limited-edition from the sixteenth century in there somewhere?"

Tara definitely wasn't complaining about the proximity, even as she couldn't resist teasing Kennedy.

"Oh my god did you see something like that?" she asked. "I -- I might have to go save the book!"

Giving the lie to her words, her fingers came up to lightly graze Kennedy's waist again.

"Man, tossed over for the much older model that I actually didn't see so it's purely hypothetical," Kennedy intoned with a melodramatic sigh, but she was laughing, and idly playing with the ends of Tara's hair. "Didn't see that one coming."

"Sorry, babe," Tara told her, smiling. "If it's you or pre-Salem spellbooks, the books win for a little while."

Kennedy ducked her head and stuck her lower lip out at Tara in a pout that came dangerously close to a wibble, although the look in her eyes hinted that she was close to laughing again. "Just for a little while, huh?"

"Uh-huh," Tara said. She was getting distracted by that wibbly pout. "You'd have to work reaaaaally hard to get my attention back."

[brat_inslayage]

"Good thing I'm a hard worker when I put my mind to it," Kennedy said, not letting up on the pout. "How hard are we talking about here? 'cause I could bust my ass for that."

"But I like your butt not busted," Tara said. "... god, that thing with your mouth? Kind of kills me."

[brat_inslayage]

Saying things like that was only going to get you a continued pout with the addition of Kennedy poking the tip of her tongue out of the corner of said mouth, Tara.

"Is that a bad thing?"

Tara tried to grasp Kennedy's hands. "It's like you want me to kiss you instead of working..."

Well, if that was what she wanted, Kennedy was happy to let her have a grasp on those hands.

"You've been working," she pointed out. "You deserve a break, don't you think?"

"Kinda thinking I have to take one," Tara said. "Have I ever showed you the srorage room?"

There was some gratuitous eyebrow waggling.

"I think you might've left that stop out of the grand tour." Kennedy couldn't help a grin at the eyebrow waggling. "Which just means you have to show me now."

She was such a bad influence.

A horrible one.

Which was why Tara squeezed her hand, turned the sign on the door to Out to Lunch! and led Kennedy off to that ever-exciting storage room.
