Jack's reading on a legal website today took him to a series about how malleable memory was.

The science of it rather terrified him. It wasn't just that the research proved eyewitness testimony wasn't reliable (though that was professionally interesting); it was a larger personal question. If you weren't the sum of your memories, who were you?

He'd be mulling that over while he read, hoping to be distracted by the arrival of someone looking for legal advice.

She wasn't looking for legal advice, but Alex certainly counted as an arrival. Especially since she brought coffee.

"I don't know what you drink," she said, setting the cup down. "Mine's tea, but most people prefer coffee."

Yes, it was June. So what? Caffeine addiction wasn't seasonal.

"Would you believe me if I said I'm agnostic?" Jack asked with a smile. "Tea is fine, if that's what you're having."

"Yours is coffee," she said, almost apologetically. "Some people will drink anything you set in front of them, and others will refuse to drink their coffee if you used too much sugar. We could use more agnostics in the world."

"Coffee is perfect too," Jack said graciously. "I'm particular about a lot of things, but not about hot beverages. Is there sugar in this?"

"One cream, two sugars," Alex said, taking a seat in the office across from his. "So I hope your agnosticism means you're not tied to black."

"Not unless you were going to offer me a hamburger to go with it," Jack answered lightly. "I'm Jewish."

He took a gulp of his coffee as he glanced over to her. "Got interesting work planned for today?"

"Then I hope I've never asked you to work on a Saturday," Alex smiled. She sipped her tea, then shook her head. "Just finished class. I was either going to do more research, or investigate online law gossip, and the latter usually wins."

"I'm better about staying kosher than keeping the sabbath," Jack said ruefully. "I don't blame you for reading the gossip. It seems to be where all the interesting information is anyhow."

"That, and lawyers are catty," she laughed. "Information is power, and usually entertaining to boot."

"Find out anything juicy today?" Jack asked curiously.

"Yesterday was the good dirt," Alex said, taking another sip from her tea. "Have you ever heard of an online site called 'Facebook'?"

She was from a few years in the past. That was her excuse for not being up on current trends.

"Some of my friends have mentioned it," Jack answered. "I'm not on it myself."

He was from 1900. That was his excuse.

"Me either," said Alex. "But apparently, it's a treasure trove for personal information -- pictures, private thoughts, messages. Divorce attorneys will find things like a photograph of a married man kissing his mistress, with the image public and with his full name written underneath. It makes you wonder if people don't want to be found out."

"It's like bragging," Jack said. "They put them up to show they can do it and get away with it. I doubt they're at all surprised to be caught."
