The Woods, Thursday evening

A white mist began to fill the woods, rolling out from where a medium-sized stone lay on the ground. The mist was suffused with a pale white light, slowly growing brighter.

The gate was open.

They came, walking out from the trees, insubstantial at first but growing solid and more real with each passing second.

They were here. The stone had kept its promise.

[They're here! There going to be is some OCD which no one is in any way required to use unless they want to. People can be drawn to the woods to meet their guests, or their guests can go somewhere else on the island and people can be drawn there, or their guests can come and find them wherever they are.]

This is probably going to be as bad as the first AU Kiddies good-bye post.

An older woman stepped through the gate. She was at least seventy, with her gray hair in a tidy knot at the nape of her neck, but her body showed the signs of a life of hard work under her simple house dress.

She walked with purpose, looking as comfortable here in the woods as she would in a kitchen or a garden.

Bill hadn't been the kind of guy to listen to offers or take deals that seemed too good to be true while he'd been alive, and that hadn't really changed after he'd stopped being alive. But despite his well founded scepticism, or maybe because of it, he could tell a sincere invitation from a false one.

Which was how a guy that looked like he'd been around a few blocks, wearing a jacket that had been around a few more, came walking out of the mists and into the woods.

Okay, technically, it was more of a swagger.

Was it strange that this was far from the weirdest thing that had ever happened to Mr. Desmond, before or after death?

Either way, he took a moment after stepping through the light to look around.

He was dressed as one might expect of a hero of the mythic age. Which was funny since he was from Brooklyn.

Frank Connell looked pretty pleased with himself as he smoothed out the lapels of his suit. He had to look good. He had a date to get in touch with his lovely daughter.

As two more figures emerged from the light, one would quickly be able to see a difference between them.

One walked with the self assure swagger of a cocky youth. The other, with the stately grace of royalty. They were both here to see the same person.

Okay... First of all, walking out of the mists? Creepy. Like Dr. Fate making lips appear in a monitor creepy. And then there's the realization that you've come back in costume. Seriously?

"Okay. If Kevin Costner shows up and wants to play catch he's going to be bery disappointed."

1.2 seconds after coming back to life and he was already making wisecracks. Yep. Ted Kord hadn't changed a bit.

The man who emerged from the mist moved with a dynamic sort of energy, like a spring coiled close to the breaking point; he looked unpredictable and wild, equally capable of a grandiose impromptu performance or a fanciful ramble at any given moment. It was the general demeanor that had defined every moment of his life until a shard of glass on a stretch of beach had ended it, and not even death, it seemed, could take it from him.

He moved with a purpose, now; there was one he needed to find, to whom his last spoken words had been a bitter curse. The opportunity to dispel that, no matter its source, was not one to be shunned, and it would not be.

A regal-looking woman dressed in veils and scarves daintily stepped through the gate. At her arm was a much more comfortable-looking, tall swarthy boy with a small smile. "Come along, Mother," he urged lightly, taking her arm.

"You mustn't rush a lady, my son," the woman said, smiling softly at him and pulling the veil she wore around her face to just below her chin, so she could speak. "This place is much different than our home. Tread lightly, lest we overstep our bounds."

Rue came out of the gate quietly--she did most things quietly--and smiled softly at the trees that surrounded them. This felt nothing like the Arena.

She found a tree to scramble up into anyway. Just because a place felt safe didn't mean it was.

The male stepped forward first, scanning the area for signs of danger. It was his place to defend and protect, after all. And even if nothing could hurt them now, it was still too much a part of who he was to ignore.

When nothing threatening appeared, he turned to offer his arm to the waiting female.

"Can you feel her?" the woman asked, anxiously, the fabric of her gowns rustling as she hurried forward.

"Why, can't you?" he teased. "She's the only Sapphire on the island. That helps narrow it down some." On his chest, an Opal Jewel gleamed.

The female with him paused. "Do you think--do you really think we ought?" she asked. "It's been so long..."

"You're her mother," he said. "Can you really turn away?"

There was no possible answer for that. Holding his arm a little tighter, the two of them turned to follow the tugging that would lead them to their daughter.

One of the figures moving through the mist was tall and lanky like teenagers are when close to reaching their full growth, a boy with dark brown hair and piercing blue eyes, dressed in Jedi robes. He'd barely achieved full corporeal form when an odd little smile lit up his face; there were three Force presences he would have known anywhere calling out to him, and another that felt familiar if much stronger than he remembered. And a fifth -- he didn't know it, but it felt like family.

The odd smile broke out into a full-fledged grin, and he set off at an easy lope through the trees.

A woman stepped out of the gate with a tread that had never seemed diffident, even when she had no idea, like now, exactly where she was going. She looked around her surroundings, sorting through the knowledge of dozens of systems to see if any of them helped her here, then smoothed her skirts over her hips, reached up to pat her elaborately coiled hair and headed out of the woods.

Stark had not, as even he might have expected, gone in search of a cupcake first thing upon his arrival in Fandom. Instead he'd gone wandering around the island, enjoying being back and the fact that it was very unlikely anyone would be after him or any of his friends here. He still wasn't sure why he'd felt so sure he needed to come now, and he wasn't sure why his wanderings had led him into the woods. But he'd been feeling oddly ever since Yondalao's death (well, more oddly than was usual) so he didn't think too much of it. Although these woods did feel very strange today. He couldn't quite identify why it felt that way, but something was happening here. And for a change whatever the something was didn't make him want to run.

"You seem ill at ease," came the voice from behind him. Carrying herself with every bit of grace and care as she did in life, Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan stood not far off, her lips curled in a pleasant smile. "What burdens you so?"

Stark froze. He heard that voice so often, had done so for cycles now. But it was always an echo in his head or in a dream. "I am always ill at ease," he said softly, unwilling to turn around just yet because if the owner of that voice wasn't really there he didn't think he could bear it. "Sometimes less than others. It's worse when I'm alone," he added in an even quieter voice.
