The Perk, Sunday Afternoon

There were new kids around and Ino found herself in the mood for hot chocolate that was mostly whipped cream. Shush. She had her preferences. Which totally meant a trip to the Perk.

And, because she felt like it, she also got an apple fritter with her drink. Just because.

Curling up in a comfy chair that let her have a view of the street, Ino tugged out a few notebooks and sipped at her hot chocolate (one day she might drink temperature appropriate drinks but today was not that day) as she made notes. Not all of the notes were important, of course, though some of them were.

And some of them were just silly. That was alright. Weren't days supposed to be like that? A bit of everything and anything?

Ask Reno what the best thing about coffee was, and he'd happily tell you that it was the extras that you could put into it. The ones that they didn't sell at the coffee shop.

Today's tiny bottle of extra flavor was Kahlua, for anybody who was curious. He'd picked it up because... why the hell not?

And it would go very nicely in that medium black coffee that he'd grabbed, he figured, while he made his way over to a corner table with his lesson plan in hand.

"Yo, Rookie," he greeted, pausing to smirk at her along the way. "Ready to get back to classes?"

"Better classes than boredom," she replied, having had the time to shut a notebook or two while he'd gotten his coffee. Not that he could read her notes, but--yes.

Ino eyed him dubiously. Er.

"True," Reno mused. "True."

And then he proceeded to eye her dubiously right on back.

"The hell is that look for?"

"Maybe I just felt like messin' with your mind," she snarked, as Rookies did.

Not that it was true, but. She hadn't expected to see him so soon! Augh.

"Ooh, so that's how kids get their jollies nowadays," Reno snorted, grabbing the chair that he was going to take off in the corner, and pulling it toward Ino's table.

... It was his chair, dammit, and nobody else could have it.

"The shit your learn in the coffee shop, yo."

Because, you know, he was so much older than his students were.

"Who invited you here?" she protested, eyeing him and his chair. "I was workin'."

Because that was totally normal Ino behaviour around Reno, yup. Really!

Reno grinned and shrugged.

"Don't need an invite, yo. That's the beauty of public coffee shops. People walk in, an' they order shit, and then they sit down whereverthehell they wanna, zoto!"

It was awesome! Ah, civilization.

"But it's generally polite to not sit with other people 'less invited," she noted, wrinkling her nose at him.

"Oh. Well."

Reno scooted his chair back a half-foot and wiggled in at a table that was ridiculously close to where Ino was sitting.

And then he turned around and grinned at her.

"Now I ain't."

"I don't think you ever get to call me childish after that," Ino informed him, tugging absently at her hair. "What're you doin'?"

Reno held up his own notebook and waved it around before dropping it on the table beside his coffee.

"Teachin' a whole course this semester," he replied. "I wanna make damn sure I got my shit straight before Tuesday, yo."

"That's encouragin' to hear," she said, glancing at his notebook. "Considerin' you're a teacher and all."

And that she was in his class, so.

"See, I live to make my students keep their faith in me," Reno replied, smirking. "Or some shit."

Yep. Nothing struck awe in the hearts of students like Reno did.

"Anyhow, fifteen's a lot of classes, yo."

"Lotsa things to teach," she replied, sipping her hot chocolate and darting a gaze over to him warily. "And lessons to impart that students get to figure out what to do with on their own after."

"Here's hopin' they do," Reno sighed, looking at the notebook. The first page, the one that it was open to, was still completely blank. "Maybe I just bullshit my way through this one. Students seem to like that, yo."

Ino arched an eyebrow.

"You're givin' up already?"

Reno shrugged, wrinkling his nose at the book.

"There some kinda law sayin' I gotta write all my classes down before I teach 'em?"

.... Well, how was he supposed to know?

"Nope, no law," she didn't think so anyway, "just the same thing, yeah? If they've learnt something you managed it."

"Right." Reno looked at the empty page for a few moments more. "Or maybe I should write somethin' down anyhow, just so I know I ain't repeatin' myself, yo."

Somebody was a little nervous about not having nice, short workshops to teach anymore, yes.

"Might help," Ino said agreeably, then leaned back in her chair and added, deliberately casually:

"I talked to Tseng."

Ino, that's not nice.

... Ino was very lucky that Reno didn't have coffee in his mouth, because she would have been wearing it.

"You what?"

"Talked to Tseng," she repeated, steeling herself in case he got mad.

Reno wasn't mad, yet. Reno was still trying to figure out what the hell she would go and do something like that for in the first place.

"Why?"

Ino lifted her chin. She was not going to mumble this even if she really wanted to. "'Cause we needed to establish contact with him."

And Zack had needed a birthday gift. Ino was not above multi-tasking.

"And it was gonna happen anyhow," Reno pointed out, still frowning. "What'd you say to him?"
