The Perk, Late Saturday Morning

This felt like a good morning to spend at the Perk with a giant muffin and a cup of hot chocolate with whipped cream. Kate had spent a good chunk of yesterday thinking about things and making some decisions, and maybe this was her reward.

She sat at a table by the window, splitting her time between looking out at the street, and playing with Zach's business card which she'd dug out from her wallet. She kept reading the words and looking at the phone number over and over, but especially with the time difference she figured it would be weird to call this early on a Saturday morning. Maybe she'd do it later.

Pretty much everything was for later. Right now, she was just going to be lazy.

Mitchell was on his way to catch his portal back to Fandom, but obviously the universe was attempting to conspire to ruin his good mood by causing an 'intradimensional malfunction', whatever that was, thus delaying him for a couple of hours.

Still, he supposed he should check on Kate before she was well and in bed, so her phone was now ringing.

So it was, and the sound jolted Kate out of her reverie, and got her digging her phone up from her bag. Having checked the screen, she picked up the call and affected a light chirp as she answered, "KG Sugar Consumption Corporation, how may I be of assistance?"

It was an okayish morning. She could be funny if she wanted to.

"I want my money back," Mitchell informed her, flopping back into a seat in the Portalocity terminal. "You haven't eaten half the goods you said you would. Breach of contract, I think they call it."

"Well, I'm sure that's just a mistake and a misunderstanding," Kate replied, easing up on the secretary impression just a touch just because she couldn't bare to emulate Alice for too long. "And the contract clearly states there are no refunds. Sir."

"Oh, remind me never to strike any bargains with you," Mitchell said, after a beat.

"Like you'd ever try," she snorted. "You know me better than that."

[chosehumanity]

"Hey, it's good to restate these things from time to time," he continued, grinning. "So how are you doing? Not eating the whole bakery, I hope."

Yes, someone was chipper.

"Oh, just a muffin the size of my head." Well, her fist, in reality. "Plus hot chocolate. With whipped cream."

"The size of your head?" Mitchell repeated. "Am I going to come back and find someone rolling you across the street?"

"Oh please, everyone knows I have freaky metabolism and can eat as much junk as I want," Kate scoffed. "Also, I may have exaggerated a little. But it's still a fucking huge muffin."

[chosehumanity]

Mitchell rummaged around in the bag of crisps he'd purchased - hypocrite - and smirked. "Yeah, you say that, and then one day you're twenty, and it hits you straight across the stomach."

"Well, I've got almost three years to go still," she decided. "Maybe I'll be married off by then and it won't matter at all."

That wasn't really the future she was envisioning for herself, no.

"Somehow I can't picture you as a housewife." He popped a crisp in his mouth.

Kate made a face, leaning back in her chair. "I can," she said. "Because Fandom made me act like a perfect one for a day once. But I think I would make a pretty rocking trophy wife, if I wanted to."

[chosehumanity]

... What now?

Really, it was a shame Mitchell's raised eyebrows were going to waste. "Maybe," he said, "But why would you?"

"Well, it would be easy, at least?" she offered, shrugging a shoulder. "Just looking pretty, not worrying about much other than that..."

At least she'd said if she wanted to.

[chosehumanity]

"Murdering yourself in the bathtub because your life is just that fucking pointless," Mitchell contributed, "Or winding up like Annie..."

He didn't sound like he was on the attack, but really rather incredulous.

He was getting some of that incredulity thrown back at him, pronto. "Wow, way to stomp on my dreams of an easy life, Mitchell," she said, frowning. "Nice one."

[chosehumanity]

"You're welcome," he volunteered. "Talk about aspirations..."

Oh, if only eyerolls were audible. "Ugh, I'm allowed to think about stuff I know wouldn't really work out for me. It's called daydreaming. Why is everyone taking everything I say so seriously?"

"Because the last time you were joking around like this, you turned out to be selling webcam time with yourself on the internet?" Mitchell guessed.

That was probably a very good point. At least it hit a nerve, if Kate's mildly uncomfortable tone was anything to go by. "Yeah can we not talk about that? I'm not even doing that anymore."

As of... oh, last week or so.

Which would make it logical for Mitchell to go "Since when?", yes.

"A while."

Ooh, good one.
