The Arms Hotel Lobby, Thursday [4/28]

Mary had entrusted Gunther with hanging a banner in the lobby while she sorted out room keys. That was probably her first mistake. First, Gunther twisted the banner so that it couldn't be read at all. Then he hung it up backwards so that that the blank side faced the entrance. Finally, Mary sent Gunther back to the kitchen and had two bell boys take over. They managed to get it correct on the first try so the banner could easily be read.

Congratulations Graduates!

"I don't suppose you boys can cook, too?" asked Mary, making a note to give the bell boys pay raises at her next opportunity.

Who is still matching room reservations to room keys, as if things could possibly have changed while she was dealing with Gunther.

It's a large lobby with plenty of room to spread out while you enjoy Gunther's fine cooking.

LJ nearly gave me a heart attack! When I hit "post," all I got was a blank page. Thank goodness my post finally appeared when I reloaded!

Leto glanced around the lobby. Not much had changed, as far as he remembered.

When Mary looked up from her clipboard, she noticed a young man looking around. Something about him looked familiar, but she couldn't quite figure out if she'd met him before. "Finding your way around?" she asked.

He turned to look at Mary, with an amused expression on his face. That was what being back in Fandom did to you when you had a universe to run.

"I believe I have a room reserved. Leto Atreides." He wasn't sure if she knew his name or not, but at least here he could assume that not everyone knew it.

Yes, that was funny.

Well, Mary recognized the last name, at least. She nodded as she checked her list. "I believe you're booked for room 617. There's another long-term resident with the name Atreides, so I upgraded you to a suite on the same floor as her."

"My sister Ghanima. Thank you for being so thoughtful."

Perhaps he should suggest late night pizza and talking to Ghani.

"I got it right, then," said Mary, grinning. "Sometimes in Fandom, you can never quite tell where and when people are coming from."

"With time, place and different universes, there are many things that can go wrong," Leto agreed, smiling back. "I was a student here once."

"And now you've come back. Is this the first time since you left Fandom?" asked Mary.

"It is," he replied. "I had some things to attend to at home first. But time passes differently here, as we all know."

"Tell me about it," said Mary with a sigh. "Every time I call my friends back home, I have to double-check how much time has passed for them. There are times that it seems to have stopped still for them while I've gone through months."

"It's been eight years for me, but only six months here, I believe." Small talk about timelines! It was enjoyable, and Mary was a sweet and attractive woman. Had he been his younger self he would have flirted with her without thinking, but he had changed in so many ways.

But why not, for old times sake? Leto reached out a hand to push away her hair. "I doubt they would notice if they saw you."

"Eight years? You really did jump forward a bit," said Mary, blushing slightly. It had been a while since anyone had flirted with her. "I only seem to be a few months ahead of my friends, but they usually catch up."

"I have some catching up to do," Leto said, smiling at her blush. "And I'm looking forward to it."

"I hope it all goes well for you," said Mary. "Eight years... it seems that everyone around you will also have to catch up a bit."

"I believe they will." He expected they would, especially after he explained. "For how long have you been here?"

"Nearly four years, I think. Maybe time sped up for my, because it doesn't feel like it's been that long," said Mary. "And I plan on being here for a very long time. I've come to love this island. It's so different from where I grew up."

"It's different from my home too." Leto smiled, mostly to himself. "And coming back here is something I've missed." He fixed his gaze on Mary and offered her one of his more charming grins. "And I'm glad to hear that you plan to stay, for purely selfish reasons. That means there will be a place to stay when I visit in the future."

"Then I can look forward to seeing you again?" asked Mary, smiling.

"Oh, certainly. I have a long life ahead of me," Leto replied.

"Well, you'll always have a room available here whenever you need one," Mary promised. "Your sister has always a good long-term guest."

And Mary had certainly had some troublesome ones when she managed hotels in Las Vegas.

Of course Ghanima had, but Leto couldn't resist some teasing. "I'm glad to hear she hasn't stabbed too many of the staff," he said cheerfully.

"The stabbings have been few and far between, but her bill is always paid on time. Besides, my head chef totally deserved it," said Mary with a chuckle.

"Oh, I'm relieved to hear that," Leto said, equally amused. "But I shouldn't take up more of your time. I'd like to leave a few things in my room before I head out."

"I'll give you a room key and you'll be all set to head up there," said Mary. "And if there's anything I can do to make your stay more pleasant, let me know."

"Thank you, I will."
