The Devil's Nest, Saturday Evening, 6/25

From the muttering that Bo was hearing from the end of the bar where Tiny leaned and poked at his phone, she gathered that tonight was going to be one of those nights where she'd probably have to keep half an eye on the customers herself. The bouncer was going to be too busy bitching at Tino -- either out loud or via text -- to be the first on the floor if a fight broke out.

Fine with Bo; physically spiffy but mentally twitchy from worrying about the sources of all that spiff, she almost looked forward to some kind of scuffle. Busting some heads would distract her.

Of course, by the third time she heard him yell Sixty points for QAT?? How is that even a WORD? at no one in particular, Bo was wondering if she should start with Tiny's. "Can't you two just shoot birds at pigs like normal people?"

Peter had decided that a less karaoke vibe was more his deal, so he'd changed the venue for the night.

He settled in at the bar and nodded to the bartender. "I'll take a beer, whatever's on tap," he said.

Scully showed up a bit later, and said, "Okay. Begin at the beginning. And I guess I owe you a drink for no postcards."

Scully would've been mystified by the fuss about it, even as her teenage side wanted a version badly.

"Gin and tonic, please." Yes, someone hadn't been in here before to know the different policies.

"The last thing I want is Minotaur bits in my mouth," Peter said. "So I appreciate your choice."

He took a sip and savored it. "Normally this would be when I reminisce that this place hasn't changed much, but I know that's because it hasn't had time to do so."

Peter chuckled. "I'll take that drink," he said. "And I guess the beginning is the background. Apparently my Fandom High diploma never registered back home, so officially I was a high school drop-out. I spent eleven years trying anything and everything. I was even an MIT professor until they discovered my college degrees were fake. Even had some papers published. This lead me to almost getting a job in Iraq to supervise the building of an oil pipeline. But Olivia, excuse me, Agent Dunham came and interrupted my negotiations."

"Well, you didn't go to the ceremony--" And he could have gotten a GED easily at any point, but that was never the objective for Peter.

"Okaaay, so, why was Agent Olivia Dunham," probably a friend, given that introduction, "interrupting your work on an oil pipeline?"

Scully blinked, nonplussed. "This bar cards? I thought there was no drinking age on the island." And hey! She had an I.D. that said she was 36! "I'm thirty-six. Really." She started scrabbling in her purse for it.

Claudia had actually never been to Devil's Nest before, and had no idea why Scully had left her a handwavey cryptic message to meet her there. It didn't really seem like Scully's scene, but, hey, wasn't like Claudia was doing much else.

"Could I get a coke?" Yeah, she was sticking to the non-alcohol for now, at least until she found out what was up.

There was a double take from Claudia when she spotted Peter at the bar.

"Well holy crap. Tell me you didn't have a run in with Jonathan Hutchinson's stethoscope."

"Because she needed Walter, like I mentioned before. Apparently most of what I knew about what he'd done was just cover. He wasn't a toothpaste scientist. He worked on fringe science, as part of a US Army program. And he had done research into something that could've helped her, well, her boyfriend at the time, who had been exposed to some sort of chemical weapon that was practically turning him into gelatin," Peter said. "She needed Walter, and I was the only one who could get her in to see him."

"Sadly the explanation isn't that simple," Peter said, just sort of amazed that Claudia was still... pretty much the same.

Which meant he was now sitting in a bar, talking to a teenage girl (Scully totally didn't count). That made him feel a slight bit self conscious.

"I see the last two months have treated you well," he joked.

"Ah." This sounded ... familiar, in a way. To thinks she and Mulder had had to deal with. Friends or family in danger, and having to take insane chances to make them well, and break rules along the way, because the rules didn't allow for extreme possibilities. "Somehow I am unsurprised that your father dabbled in unacknowledged science."

Yes. Yes he was.

"Oh, well, you know, there was that period of growth where I really felt I discovered who I was as a person." She shrugged. "Okay, so it was mostly actually dismantling steampunk spiders and getting handwavey advice on siege machinery from Vikings, but that's growth."

"I apparently left the island two months ago. Which is news to me, as I've lived almost twelve years in that time frame," Peter said. "Which now means I'm over a decade older than all my old friends."

"Nice to meet you, Bonnie," Scully said with sarcasm, then held out her FBI ID-- which would have looked more convincing if she looked twenty years older. "That. Is me. I swear."

Look, she doesn't even want the drink that badly, but this irks.

"Wow. That's actually a pretty action packed set of months," Peter said, impressed. "And here, all I did was... oh, nearly a dozen years of various jobs."
