The Perk [early Wednesday evening]

When Joan had arrived on this funny little island, she'd immediately wanted to find somewhere to relax, and maybe take in a little people-watching before her meeting. And while she was a little thrown by what was essentially a job interview in the evening, it wasn't exactly unheard of - how many times had she made reservations for the boys to take a client out for drinks? It wasn't so different, she supposed.

Even so, she knew that rather than a drink, she needed a pick-me-up. So Joan found herself a cute little coffee shop, marveled at the exotic drinks (she had no idea what a macchiato might be; time to brush up on her Italian) and found herself a seat with her coffee.

She was slowly noticing the odd technology and clothing. Somehow, a jump forty-one years into the future hadn't occurred to her yet.

"Excuse me -- did you notice if they still have any of the blueberry pastries?" Tyrion asked, as he paused by her table on the way to the counter.

In truth, he didn't really care about blueberry pastries -- not right then, anyhow -- but he regarded it as a pleasant duty to say hello to any redhead with a figure like that.

It tended to not be the first thing that came to mind when you arrived in a quaint little town, after all. But, that was Fandom for you.

"I'm starting to think I need to come here more often," Howard remarked, giving Joan a smile. "Every time I arrive, there's always a new woman."

Oh, the poor thing. Joan was used to New York, so she didn't stare, but the thought jumped to the forefront of her mind, all the same. She offered a smile, though, inclining her head his way. "I didn't notice," she admitted apologetically. "Big fan of purple-tinted bread?"

Blueberries always seemed to bleed like that. It was hazardous to eat them while wearing anything nice.

Oh, look. Proof for Joan that this little venture wasn't a total bust. At least, for now.

"New as can be," Joan said with a warm smile. "Fresh on the island new, in fact. Hope I don't disappoint in your little trend."

"Not when you put it that way," Tyrion said with a slight grimace. "I may stick to something that doesn't seem guaranteed to tint my teeth for the rest of the day."

With a figure like that, it was difficult to disappoint anyone.

"Howard Stark," he said, holding out a hand.

Joan giggled, wrinkling her nose a little. "I've never met a blueberry that wasn't determined to ruin whatever I was wearing, anyway. Hopefully this doesn't put too big a dent in your evening."

"Joan Holloway," she said, delicately taking the offered hand. "Every girl should be lucky to have such a gallant welcome. Have you been here long, Mr. Stark?"

"Given that my epic plans were getting a snack here and then going back to my apartment to read and try to sleep, no, not particularly," Tyrion said, smiling back at her. "I'm Tyrion Lannister, by the way. I teach up at the school."

"A few months now, but it feels like ages," Howard replied, with a shrug. "It's a unique town, that's for sure."

"Joan Holloway," she said, offering a hand. "I arrived on the island...oh, about twenty minutes ago. It's a pleasure, Mr. Lannister. What do you teach?"

"I'm from Manhattan," she replied. "I'm pretty used to 'unique.'"

Not like this, Joan.

Howard just grinned at that.

"New York? I'm more partial to California myself," he said with wink. Because apparently that worked on women in the forties. "Sun and all that open space."

Tyrion took the hand easily, giving it a brisk shake before he let go. "Strategic planning, and I got here an entire two and a half months ago," he said. "Do you have plans here, or is it a day trip?"

"I'm interviewing for a secretarial position shortly," she replied, taking a glance out the window at the setting sun. "Do you like it here? I'd like to hear a local's impression before I make any decisions. Even a local who's maybe a little new, himself."

It worked on women from the sixties, too. At least, a little. Joan grinned, anyway.

"I've never been, and you've got me all jealous now," she sighed, reaching for her cigarettes and lighter. No one had told her she couldn't smoke everywhere, just yet. "It's sunny all the time?"

And far be it for Howard to stop her. Cigarettes were healthy, after all!

"All but the night time," he assured her, taking a seat across from her.

"It's a very free place," Tyrion said, weighing it for a moment. "Even though it's quite far from my home, it was easy to find a place for myself. That was never so easy at home. In that way, I like it quite a bit. Though of course you have to put up with a great deal of -- I can only call it foolishness."

"And what part of sunny, warm California do you hail from, Mr. Stark?" she asked, and she wasn't feigning her curiosity. "If you say L.A. I might just cry from sheer envy."

"I'm fairly used to foolishness," Joan decided thoughtfully, thinking of how just a few days ago, Ken Cosgrove had tackled a woman to the floor at an office party. "Especially if it means that this warm welcome will extend into a comfortable stay."

"Malibu, actually," Howard replied. "It's always interesting to find people who haven't heard of me."

"Well, it might be a new form of foolishness, but I suppose that depends on where you're coming from," Tyrion ventured. "Most of it's harmless, anyhow. Just irritating."

"Harmless but irritating is just about my speed," she assured him with a grin. "Now, you venture into harmful, and I'm going to need to find some kind of bunker or a way off the island quick."

"Can't say I have," she said, shaking her head regretfully. "What might you be famous for?"

"Stark Industries. Most notably chief supplier of munitions for the Allied forces."
