Tiny had taken the weekend off, had spent three hours in traffic and gotten exactly nowhere, and was now back behind the bar with sunscreen on his nose, a terrifying Hawaiian shirt covering his chest, and a pair of flipflops that had seen better days.

The DJ was playing Jimmy Buffet, and between breaks was trying to chat to Tiny about the furniture sales he was going to hit for Memorial Day Weekend.

Eric was just...going to be over here.

Gah, so freaking hot.

YAY!

But then, Jack was willing to yay at anyone who might give him a job, since he seemed to have decided to stay, at least for a bit, and Ms. Cabot had left the island. He'd gotten fond of Devil's Nest while Emma worked there, and there was something very home about working for a vampire that made him want to check there first. He came in early in the evening and inclined his head to Eric in a formal nod.

You didn't forget how to be properly respectful to vampires you didn't know well, even if you had a wolf inside you.

"Mr. Northman," he said. "I was wondering, are you hiring for the bar at all these days?"

Eric was pleased to see someone know how to behave and so he rewarded Jack with an almost smile. "I am," he said. "Are you planning a return to the island?"

"I think I am," Jack admitted. "My job dried up, my friends are still here, and I seem to have decided I like the place."

"Did you turn into a pony last weekend?" Eric asked. "I was visiting a friend in a different land. It was awkward."

"It skipped me, but I was still in London anyhow," Jack said. "I'm sorry I didn't get here in time. Emma won't show me photos."

"I might have accidentally kicked some people. Maybe."

Eric, don't look so smug about that.

"That's not bad at all, if they deserved it," Jack decided. "After all, you have a perfect excuse."

No one could hold a pony responsible for his actions, could they?

"Oh, they completely deserved it," Eric declared. "Even if I was only awake for a few hours of time to interact with them--"

Which gave him an idea. "You are awake in the daylight, right?"

"I am," Jack confirmed, not sure where it was going but willing to answer the question. "My ... complication kicks in at night, but even that's only a few nights a month."

"I find myself without someone to take care of my affairs during the day. Tiny tries but my trip home through Portalocity hit Estonia in mid-summer and there's...not a lot of nighttime then." Eric gave Jack an assessing glance. "You know better."

"I do," Jack acknowledged. "My guardian's not got quite the same rules, but I know enough to book hotel rooms without many windows, keep you away from places with 20 hours of daylight, things like that."

It would be both familiar and totally different. And, Jack realized with mixed dismay and resignation, it was quite possibly the single thing on this earth he was best suited for.

"And I'm not too bad at keeping records either, if there's paperwork."

In his experience, there was almost always paperwork.

"There's always paperwork," Eric grumbled. "You're welcome to take a shift in the evenings too, but this is what I was paying Joan."

He scribbled an enormous number onto a cocktail napkin and handed it to Jack.

The only sign that Jack realized how very much he was being offered was was the slight widening of his eyes, and the working of the muscles at the sides of his mouth as he tried not to grin. It was far more than he'd expected, at least until he actually was a lawyer.

"I think I could make that work," he said, coolly as he could manage. "What's been piling up since she left? I could even start over the weekend."

Eric took that as an invitation to give Jack a brief tutorial on Louisiana vampire politics, especially as they pertained to the recent power vacuums in Mississippi and Louisiana.

In conclusion: a ton of paperwork for the Sheriff of Area Five, which was why he spent so much time in Fandom.

Ah. It sounded like quite enough work to justify the salary, but that was preferable to the alternatives. Jack listened carefully, interjecting only when something needed to be clarified.

"Well," he said dryly, "I certainly see why you base yourself here. I can be in the business office on Monday, if that would suit you?"

He assumed he'd be in the business office many days, but setting one to ~~post on~~ start with seemed a good plan.

"That would be fine," Eric said. "Tiny will get you a copy of the key in the morning. You're staying at Ronan and Emma's?"

Eric ~~terrified squirrels~~ had sources.

Squirrels or no squirrels, that was the tiniest bit creepy.

"That's where to find me," Jack said, and rubbed at the back of his neck.

Well, Eric enjoyed being a tiny bit creepy. Vampire thing.

"He'll drop them off there," he said with a nod. "Welcome, Mr. Priest."
