Devil's Nest [Friday Night]

Eric had made a lot of very poor decisions over the thousand years he'd been alive (or undead, but let's not be nitpicky, okay?), but sleeping with Morrigyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyn last weekend had to be cracking at least the top twenty.

How many y's did one person need in their name anyway? She'd probably spelled it vampyre, too. Ugh.

Eric was at the Devil's Nest, lurking in his usual spot in the VIP lounge, while Tiny was behind the bar trying to figure out how to toss glasses like a fancy bartender. It was going...less well.

Kate didn't have Eric's number, which kind of slowed down her spontaneous decision to call him. But, she did have a number for the Devil's Nest, which was better than nothing.

If nothing else, she could always have a polite little discussion with Tiny, because she was excellent at connecting with Fandomites. So, she was calling.

Tiny was busy cleaning up broken glass (again. Sigh, Tiny), so Eric actually answered the phone for once.

"Devil's Nest. Yes, you need to be 21 to drink. Yes, I can tell if you're lying."

"Well I'm still eighteen but that hasn't stopped you before."

Eric's tone became less icy and bored. "Kate."

"That'd be me," she agreed cheerfully. "Hi. Why are you answering the phone yourself, don't you have people you intimidate into doing that for you?"

"Tiny just dropped a bottle of vodka on his foot, so I'm using up my monthly allocation of nice and answering the phone," Eric replied. "Bored on a Friday night, huh?"

"Technically, it's not a Friday night here." Damn those multiversal time differences! "But the principle is the same. And you know, everyone knows vampires aren't boring, so."

"It's so true. We're also extremely good looking."

And modest!

"I don't know, I don't tend to notice," Kate said, lying like a lying thing but that was obvious enough. "Plus, Bod's guardian's not that hot."

"Maybe he's secretly a werewolf."

Petty vampire was petty.

"No, that was his other caretaker when he was young," she replied without missing a beat. "Romanian lady who didn't cook so good. What've you got against werewolves?"

"They're smelly and they shed and they currently outnumber me two to one in the bar," Eric bitched.

Kate snickered. Because Eric was her reminder that it really didn't matter how old you got, you'd still be annoyed by fairly petty stuff.

"I'm gonna tell Jack you called him smelly," she informed him. "Who's the other one?"

"The other one says I smell like a corpse!" Eric said, sound offended. "I hired him anyway...name's Derek. Not a big talker."

"Well, you've been dead for like a thousand years, someone was bound to notice." Kate, be nice. "And you did hire him anyway..."

"He was just lurking there, blocking my view," Eric said. "And Jack asked a favor."

And Eric never minded people being beholden to him.

"Excuses, excuses," Kate replied, mock airily. "I should probably drag my ass to Fandom at some point again and try and catch the new guy. I'm yet to meet a werewolf I didn't like."

Though it was sad how many she had met.

"How many werewolves have you met?" Eric asked, making a mental note not to invite Alcide here.

Like he even would. Stupid Alcide and his abs.

There was a pause as Kate fell silent to count them. "Okay, so it's only three but you've seen where I live. That's plenty for someone from my circumstances."

"True," Eric admitted. "Have you met shifters? Fairies? Fairies are delicious."

Kate didn't need to know that, Eric.

Too bad making a face didn't make a sound. "Yeah so I've heard," she drawled. "I think I've heard that before, but nice to know it doesn't get any less gross-sounding with a repeat."

"I'm just trying to expand your palate," Eric said. "How is Nebraska?"

He knew exactly where she was. He was under the impression he was funny.

"How's the Alzheimer's?" Kate shot back.

She thought she was funny too.

"Who's this again?" Eric replied.

"Your illegitimate great grand-grand-grand-granddaughter."

That was not enough grands, but she didn't care.

"Excellent! I have some shirts that need to be washed," Eric declared.

Snort. "Only for a very large sum of money in pre-inheritance."

"Back in my day, a shiny nickel was a lot of money."

Yeah no, Eric.

"Did they even have nickels 'in your day'?" Kate asked, snickering. "Also, no."

"No, we called them 'chunks of gold,'" Eric said. "In Swedish."

"And see, a chunk of gold sounds way more valuable than a nickel, anyway," Kate pointed out. "It'd be a much better offer."

"Very well, long lost descendent," Eric said. "You can wash my shirts for a chunk of gold."

[vanillajello]

"Yaaay." She even propped her phone momentarily between her ear and her shoulder so she could have both hands free to clap together. "Of course you'll probably send them to Nebraska so I'll never see them, but anyway."

"I'll make Jack take care of the details," Eric said like the spoiled sheriff he was.

So yes, Kate, you'll be getting a chunk of gold in the mail. And not a tiny one, either.

And Kate still mostly thought he was joking (with the caveat that she knew old vampires were tricksy, though).

That was okay, she liked surprises.
