The Perk, Monday Afternoon

Yeah, okay, so. Bobby had some Big News. And he'd meant to do this like, weeks ago, but, you know... evil mutants and missions and blah blah blah.

He just really hoped Karla had managed to keep what Sookie had told her under wraps because, you know. Part of the fun was getting to tell one's friends and all. Best friends in particular.

So he'd ~~handwavily~~ given Warren a call, luring him temporarily back to Fandom with promises of coffee from the Perk. Because this was the sort of thing that was so much more fun in person.

Snagging a table, he ordered an iced coffee for himself and an Americano for War, and an obscene amount of pastries, and sat down to wait.

"Is the pastry army uprising to attack? Is that why you called me here today?" Warren was grinning as he walked over to Bobby's table, gesturing toward the snack foods in question. "You just needed backup, didn't you? I should have known, when you asked me to meet you here on this crazy island."

'Hello' was for other people.

"Please," Bobby rolled his eyes. "Like I'd need backup when food's involved. More like I'm being nice and sharing, even though I could easily defeat this entire army on my own." A beat. "By eating it," he added... you know, in case that was unclear.

"You know, I was wondering what your strategy was for defeating this horde," Warren chuckled, sliding into the seat across from Bobby, straddling it backwards and shooting Bobby a grin. "Really, I should have known that it wouldn't stand a chance against you."

He was totally going to reach out and snag the blueberry strudel. Because Bobby was being nice and sharing, see?

"I'm the man you wanna call when you're dealing with a case of malicious muffins," Bobby deadpanned. "Or sinister strudels."

"And of course that's something that I'll be sure to keep in mind if some malicious Sunnydale demonspawn decides to possess the stock of the coffee shop during midterms," Warren replied.

... He was not entirely joking.

"How have you been, man? Taking care of yourself, I hope?"

"You oooooooowe meeeee," Karla said in a singsong, breezing through the door of the Perk. "Do you have any idea how hard it's been not squeeing over Certain News Items I couldn't share?"

"Oh, you know," Bobby shrugged. "Just getting ready to finish up my last semester." Nothing else at allll, nope. Really.

And that'd be Bobby wordlessly aiming a blueberry scone at Karla's head. There. Now were they even?

"And school is treating you well, is it?" Warren was still oblivious, Bobby. See how oblivious he was?

Totally. Completely, even. It was actually kind of sad.

"It took me a whole semester, but I'm pretty certain it's safe to say that university is out to kill me. So... congratulations on getting so far."

THEY WERE NOT.

Karla caught the scone with Craft and took a bite out of it. "Have you told him yet? Because I'm getting impatient!"

"Why do you think I'm here, genius?" Bobby rolled his eyes in fond exasperation. "I don't trust Sunnydale's coffee, and bringing him to my New York is just asking for trouble."

"Oooh, but then I could make fun of him for wearing tights!" Karla said, knowing exactly what kind of trouble it would ask for. "You could be here for me, you know. You might have missed my charming and whimsical personality. Or tell me about the epic fight you had with Sookie, because you want me as your attendant instead of hers."

"Yeah, well, that's what you get for going to school someplace that is actually called a Hellmouth."

Not that New York was actually any safer, although there'd only been a demonic invasion that one time.

"Sorry to disappoint," Bobby said dryly, "but no. And seriously, I do appreciate your keeping quiet," he said honestly. "Because- well, okay, I guess I am doing this more than once, technically, but you know what I mean." Ah, the headache of knowing two Warrens.

"The Hellmouth, I can handle," Warren sniffed. "My girlfriend's uncle is the ruler of Hell. I'm talking about the curriculum. Fandom doesn't prepare you for University as well as I had hoped it would, does it?"

"That's why I kinda, um," he coughed, running a hand through his hair nervously, "did most of the coursework while I was still here." Only Bobby would manage to sound profoundly embarrassed by the acknowledgement that he actually gave academics any serious consideration.

"It was hard," Karla admitted. "I wanted to glee at him--I'm so happy for both of you! But I know that he would have preferred to hear it from you, so I stayed quiet."

And now she could squee at him and grab his arm and shake him and geeble.

"And if I had half a brain in my head, I would've done the same," Warren replied, smirking a little at Bobby's embarrassment.

Any and all 'featherbrain' remarks would be met with a thump to the side of the head, courtesy of a large wing.

"Really, I should have followed your lead. School after Fandom was kind of a last-minute decision, though. Serves me right."

Bobby shrugged. "Not like you actually need the degree," he pointed out. "But anyway. School's boring," he said dismissively. "I've got something better to talk about."

"Better than school? I find that difficult to believe," Warren teased. Really, he was pretty sure anything Bobby had to discuss would be more exciting than more complaining about how Warren wasn't prepared for the curriculum. "I can't even imagine what could possibly be a step up from that sort of discussion, Bobby."

So, go on and wow him!

"Sarcasm, War?" Bobby said loftily. "I'm not sure that was called for."

"Yeah, but I was being sarcastic about myself, so it hardly counts. Unless you're standing up for my honor, in which case, I owe you one, man. I really do need someone around to reprimand me when I start mouthing myself off like that."

So you tell him, Bobby. You tell him good.

"So, what's the big news? You're not going to make me beg, are you?"

"That would be pretty funny..." Bobby mused.

"... I didn't even know the human voice could go that high," Bobby mused.

"Bobby," Karla said, exasperated, "You're getting married."

Maybe he hadn't realized!

"Oh, that's cruel and unusual," Warren replied, shaking his head. "What kind of begging should I stoop to, then? Bribery? Sobbing at your feet?"

He had no intentions of sobbing at anyone's feet.

"As entertaining as that would be..." Bobby snickered.

"I, uh. May have asked Sookie to marry me." 'May have', Bobby?

"I'm whatting what?" he stared at her, wide-eyed.

Yeah, the best part was not all of that 'OMGWTF' in his expression was feigned.

"'May have,' Bobby?"

Yeah, sometimes Warren and Bobby's narrative shared a wavelength or two. But Warren was grinning as he said that, because that really was something that required a grin.

"And is it possible that she just maybe said yes?"

Karla was now just going to stare at him.

"Did you miss that part?" she asked wryly.

Considering his 'proposal' had pretty much consisted of him shoving the ring at her and mumbling something about how she didn't have to, 'may have' was... pretty damn accurate.

"She did." Big, goofy grin now.

"Oh, you mean that thing where I bought her a totally sweet-ass ring and asked her to wear it and she said yes?" Bobby said, now looking just a tad pleased with himself. "I totally remember that."

"Yeah, what was that using a sapphire in it, huh?" Karla teased. "I thought we all agreed that that was my gemstone of choice."

Warren's return grin wasn't half as goofy, but it was pretty wide all the same as he stood, reached across the table, and clapped Bobby on the shoulder.

"That," he informed him, "is probably the most excellent news I've heard in forever. Congratulations! Have you guys figured out a date or anything yet?"
