Conversational Lithuanian, Tuesday evening

"Lābas vākaras," Hannibal told them all when they arrived. "This evening's vocabulary centers around music, since that was another interest expressed." He nodded at Jono ~~assuming he's here~~.

He wrote a number of words on the board as a start:

"A number of words are clearly loans from other languages, as you can see," he pointed out, tapping the board at 'rock group'. "Others are quite different, and I'm afraid there's no discernible logic."

After he went over their pronunciation, he said, "I thought I would use this as an opportunity to go over some verbs as well, so you can become acquainted with conjugations." He pointed out the two already on the board. "To play an instrument, and to create - in this context, to compose. Some others you may find useful are atlikti, to perform, klausyti, to listen, and dalyvauti, which is both to participate, and to attend a concert." He smiled. "Personally, I like its connotations."

He went over the conjugations. "Are there any questions? Any particular phrases or instruments you're interested in?"

Jono would have to look those up himself at work, clearly. As it stood, he was far more interested in today's class than last week's, again taking notes, but doing so with something like a smile at the corners of his eyes.

Hannibal, you were making Jono all kinds of happy today.

Sure, he couldn't eat any of this himself, but he could appreciate what he was looking at, here.

Eleanor Lamb

Eleanor was diligently taking notes, wondering if she could try them out at work tomorrow. She doubted any of the customers would speak Lithuanian, but you never knew.

This was the first week that Eleanor had been brave enough to try the food, instead of skulking around near the back of class. The fish was quite lovely.

Being the complete nerd I am, I am wondering if that's the origin of "grok" in its current slang form.

Feel free to mock me.

Eleanor waited until it looked like most of the students had filtered out. And then, hands shoved deep into her pockets, she approached.

"I ... feel I might owe you an apology," she said, measuring each word as if she were under a ration.

I have no clue. I wouldn't put anything past Heinlein!

Atticus O'Sullivan

Atticus was starting to understand why so many people came to this class when there was no real need to learn a foreign language. He hadn't had proper puddings like this in quite a while, and he was definitely going to take his time enjoying them.

Honestly, Hannibal was mostly counting on the food to draw people in. It wasn't like most people were likely to ever need Lithuanian unless he got de-aged again.

"You've uncovered my nefarious plan to indulge a friend," Hannibal declared. "I trust it's working. What would you like to taste first?"

"Skanus," Hannibal answered, smiling. "Delicious. And ačiū."

"Do you?" Hannibal raised an eyebrow at her, giving her his attention as non-threateningly as possible. "For what?"

//It's working just fine,// Jono promised, clearly amused. //And... asking me to choose what comes first? Lord, I don't know if I can.//

And they probably didn't go well together in the same mouthful. So he was going to have to.

//The steak and kidney puddings first, perhaps? Even when I could eat them, they weren't exactly something I was getting much of, living in America.//

"Americans have very little appreciation for organ meats," Hannibal noted, reaching for one of the puddings. "I do my best to encourage it whenever I can."

He broke through the crust with a fork and took a bite, savoring the meat and spices on his tongue.

It was difficult to ignore the man that looked so much like Will, particularly when he seemed to be properly appreciating Hannibal's cooking.

"How are you finding the class, Mr. O'Sullivan? You're the only one here who has had some exposure to the language before; I hope I'm not boring you."

//Hard t'find n'thing but liver, usually,// Jono agreed, suddenly thoroughly distracted by the flavour as he psionically tapped into Hannibal's sense of taste. //'S a bloody shame. They'll turn their noses up at...//

Yes. That sounded about right.

"Ačiū. Especially this banana pudding," Kenzi said, digging in. "Some of those words sound closer to English now."

All right, this was difficult. Every nerve wanted to scream that he wanted to cut her open, see what made her tick, twist her mind in against itself. It was a rather thorough prejudice she had developed, against psychiatrists.

"I ... was quite rude to you, at our first meeting," she said. "You were simply trying to ... teach a class, and I behaved abominably."

"Oh, you're not boring me at all," Atticus assured him. Honestly, it took a lot to bore him these days. "Refreshing my vocabulary is probably good, and it was nice to find something typical going on after... well, a rather odd weekend."

Yeeeah, Kenzi had left some stuff out when telling him about this place.

"Thank you." Hannibal nodded. "And I agree. Many people are far too limited in the meats they'll eat." He took another bite and followed it with a sip of the gira.

Hannibal smiled. "Your apology is welcome and accepted. However, I've experienced far worse than a few pointed questions, I assure you."

He folded his hands on the desk. "It's obvious to me that you've had very bad experiences with people calling themselves psychiatrists. It isn't always easy to put aside such things."

"Several of these are." Hannibal shrugged. "Lithuanians are very good at borrowing words they need. Though not quite as good as English," he acknowledged.

"English mugs other languages," Kenzi agreed. "And then claims they found the verbs first... so what's your favorite language?"

Eleanor hesitated before deciding to at least reveal a bit of her concern.

"Mother believed in what she called the 'triage imperative,'" she said. "She called herself an 'ethical psychiatrist.' She manipulated people, tortured, even killed, all for what she saw as the greater good."

Hannibal thought about it. "I'm not sure; I'm terribly fond of Italian, but I don't know if I'd call it my favorite. What about you?"

"Hmm. English for everyday stuff, but Russian? For swearing. And talking about things that are ... important. Dense." Deep, or depressing, or just really personal. "And I'm beginning to think Lithuanian for the food, man." She cocked her head. "Have you been to Italy?"

Hannibal blinked. "I suspect she and I have very different ideas of both ethics and psychiatry."

Not that he was against manipulation, torture, and killing, but he was well aware it wasn't generally considered ethical. And while beneficial manipulation was often the point of therapy, he did his best to avoid the latter two with patients.

"Several times. I lived in France for a while," Hannibal answered. "And we went there with the school only last semester. I'm very fond of Venice."
